Random Internet dude goes over a year without using soap/shampoo. Surprising results

I've never really told anybody, if someone asks I'll probably let them know, unless I get the intuitive impression that they would be ignorant, in which case I'll say nothing.

You might not need to use any of that soon. Often, hair product is needed because you've stripped away the hair's natural oils. My hair got a lot more manageable on its own once I stopped using shampoo (I rinse it with diluted vinegar). I also saw more regrowth in thinning areas.

Sounds good to me, my hair's thick but never really had a whole lot of volume due to shampooing. Always felt thicker and more alive if I hadn't showered. Definitely sticking this out.

Shower 2, sometimes 3 times a day. Soap + Hotwater. Occasional dap of shampoo to scrub my scalp.

I couldn't imagine life without soap. Ugh.

I do use soap/shampoo/deodorant but whenever I go 3-4 days using only deodorant and pure water showers either my gf or a lady friend will mention I smell great. /shrug

The guy says he doesn't stink even when being really active. WTF? Guy doesn't sweat from his armpits?

This has nothing to do with soap or not, a normal human being should smell after a workout.

From what I'm understanding from this thread... it takes a few months for you to get used to the smell?

You wouldn't even smell shit anymore if you stood in it for a month.

I ended up trying this. I gave it a month and a half. I didn't smell at all but my hair was so greasy. I ended up going back to using soap.

I'm going to give this a try tomorrow morning. It makes sense from what everyone is saying. As a kid, I had a habit of not showering often, but had soft, curly thick hair. Then the self-concious teen years came along, and like everyone else, I became obsessed with hygiene products. On gel-less days when I'm not in the office, my hair looks dry, frizzy and dull after a typical shower... and I've bought really expensive stuff and tried many brands. Doesn't matter. My hair has also gotten a little thinner around the sides. It would also be great just to spend less time in the shower, not having to soap up all over.

While basic hygiene is important, we only started using so many of these "personal care" products very recently in our history, really in just the last 50-100 years. Not out of true necessity, but fear instilled in us by companies who make a killing on this stuff. For decades, they have preyed on our insecurities with negative advertisements in which their products are the only salvation from humiliating social situations invented by themselves. I won't be surprised if this experiment works as well as others have said.

Question for the nosoapers: are you in the nosoap closet, or have you told your friends and family?

I told my past few girlfriends, none of which were willing to believe me until they saw it happen. They all thought my skin/smell was too nice for it to be true.

My mom knows because when I was living at home I never used shampoo or moved the soap in the shower.

To the people that dont use soap... Do u guys ever have sex?, because i need to shower twice after getting busy, no way water alone would remove that stank.

I've never needed soap after sex, even after the especially sweaty kind.

Sigh. Comments like these are so expected, but ignorant as well. If you had bothered to read the thread you would know better.

I'm just giving my personal experience to help educate people, but if you aren't going to listen then why bother commenting at all? It's only making you look like you can't read....

Decided to try this only on my head though. My hair always gets oily after a few hours from a wash. I sometimes get clogged pores and whiteheads near my hairline. I'm thinking it's probably from the oily hair. The first few days of just using hot water, my hair felt nasty and greasy. After a week, the oiliness decreased. After two, there was minimal oil. Then a month and I can run my fingers through my hair all day long without having that oily feeling. My forehead is clear from blemishes too. Make sure to scrub and massage your scalp each time so there won't be any oil build up.

Don't knock it until you try it. My hair feels and looks much better.

Do you guys not use any products then? Styling products definitely help hair to look better depending on what style you go for, but I think for most people it improves the look. Plus there's a thousand products for the face, like cleansers, exfoliators, moisturisers, etc. which I find help massively.

I'm interested in trying this, but you guys just seem crazy tbh :p

It's funny that some of the points you mention have made our species weaker.

Our civilization as a whole on the other hand has vastly improved by them.

People are either not reading the thread, trolling, or just being straight up ignorant.

It's too bad most of you guys will never know what it's like to be a real Eastwood-tier viking fucker because you can't get over your mommy's scrubbing lessons.

It makes logical sense. Your body produces all this oil(sebum) for a purpose, yet we're so eager to wash it away without a second thought. I'll give it a shot, for GAF and for science!

The argument for this is that your body has a built in mechanism and when it detects you are not using soap it stops making you smell?

The "natural oils" argument is about why your hair gets greasy. You use shampoo and strip the natural oil away, so your body produces even more. When you stop using shampoo, it takes a while for this to stabilize and after that your hair no longer gets "oily."

The smell argument is that it doesn't take detergents to get rid of the bacteria that make you stink in the first place. Water will do that just fine. Obviously, you still need to shower after activity that makes you sweat, but the same is true for soapers.

I haven't embarked on the no soap path, but I stopped using shampoo and instead baking soda/vinegar sparingly and once a week and there is a very, very noticeable difference in how much oil my head produces compared to when I was using shampoo now that a few months have passed. My face also seems to have cleared up and is also less oily than before.

Let me clarify what I do since some people could possibly have taken my post the wrong way.

1. I use deodorant daily, unless I'm lazy and won't be doing anything active for the day.
2. I shower daily. If I got mud/dirt/extreme sweat I will use soap, since that functionally loosens the surface tension of water and gets in deeper. Otherwise I'll just rub myself with water over my body.

I've been very clean, never smelly. Don't really see what the problem is. I think a big problem people have is that they don't understand why soap works. There's a reason you use water with soap. Its because soaps makes water clean you better. You are still being cleaned by water. Soap just helps water clean you better.

Edit: And yeah, I use styling products when I go out.

Anyone who finds this idea absurd probably thinks that soap is some kind of magical substance that "cleans" (whatever that means) any surface merely by coming into contact with it.

I've been going "no soap" since this thread was posted a year ago and I love it.

To clarify:

1) I do use deodorant
2) I shower everyday
3) I still use Shampoo

Scrubbing well with a washcoth in a hot shower removes all dirt.

When I first started dating my wife (about this time last year) and first showered at her place she was like "WTF" when I told her that I didn't use soap. We've been married and living together for 6 months and she still rags me on it occasional but I never smell, etc... If I did I'd start using soap again.

The main difference I've noticed is that when I was using soap I'd have to use some sort of moisturizer every time I got out of the shower or my skin would be so dry it would literally hurt. Once I stopped using soap I could also stop using lotion. It's great.

Question(s):

Do you guys wet your hair daily? I heard/was told that not letting the moisture leave your scalp can cause hair loss. I usually lose lots of hairs when I shampoo after one or two days of no washing; so, when going no shampoo, do you guys let your hair get wet every day or use a shower cap?

What about towel consumption and pyjamas? How often do you have to change them due to body oils building up? Is this a problem at all?

What's the towel procedure... do you vigorously rub so as to remove oil and dead skin or just dab?

Also I think diet must play a huge role cause I lived with some Indians in grad scjool who were no soapers who ate lots of spicy food and they smelled terrible.

Will try this!

I think I'll ditch the shampoo and soap but obviously keep the deodorant as well as conditioner mixed in with some lemon juice (lemon juice for its various miraculous properties for the whole body).
