Since you like dubbed, I'll recommend Ranma 1/2 and Excel Saga. Both of these have excellent English dubs.

They just happen to be two of my favs.

Some series I'm currently watching/watched (All great dubs imo):

Last Exile - Up to disc 5 and it's getting really really crazy (good crazy). So far theres nothing bad about this series (maybe a bit drawn out)...solid storyline/characters, amazing animation and music...it's becoming on of my all time favorites.

Wolf's Rain - End of disc 1 and so far I'm really enjoying it. Only 4 discs (iirc) so it's not going to break the bank.

FLCL - Insanity at it's finest. After watching it 4 times, I'm still learning things about the characters. A must buy, imo.

Cyborg 009 - Watched the first episode and it looks like it's gonna be a goodie. I love the whole retro thing it has going on...and the action in episode 1 kicked ass.

L/R - Just finished this up, great spy/detective series. It's a little light on the action, but the 2 main characters are fun to watch and go together really well (like the odd couple). Awesome music, plenty of plot twists and a great art style.

Ninja Scroll: The Series is pretty good. I just finished up the second of three discs. Its alot of style over substane but its still pretty awesome. Lots of good action, and not alot to buy. Its only 3 discs at like 20 bucks each, if that.

Ghost in The Shell - Stand Alone Complex (26 eps/5 DVDs)

Its a great series. Not quite easy to understand but GITS was always meant to be watched more than once.

You need some Laputa in your life. Get educated:

One of the best anime films ever. Out of the Miyazaki films I've seen, this one is my favourite.

Check out Azu Manga Daioh- it's truly one of the funniest animes I've seen.

Also, I have to promote Great Teacher Onizuka- it's one of four reasons I've decided to become a teacher. I know, that's lame, but it's that DAMN good.

I think Gunsmith Cats is on sale for the ADV classics for $20. Not as good as the manga, but it's still very fun.

I didn't see Spirited Away on your list. Get that with Laputa.

OMG ALUCARD .. I'm almost 100% sure that this is from the same makers of Conan The Future Boy ...

I grew up with that thing .. where can I buy that from ?

You need some more movies, too:

Akira
Royal Space Force - Wings of Honneamise
Patlabor 1 - 3
Ninja Scroll
Ghost in the Shell
Jin Roh - The Wolf Brigade

More Miyazaki can never hurt either:

Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Kiki's Delivery Service
Castle of Cagliostro

Hmm, I'm missing some of the best Anime on your list. You should try:

Sazan Aizu, aka 3x3 Eyes (!)
Mononoke Hime
Sen to Chihiro
Chojin Densetsu Urutsuki Doji 1+2
Akira
Ghost in the Shell
Grave of the Fireflies (!)
Ninja Scroll

Oh, and definitely get Grave of the Fireflies! It'll most likely make you cry like a school girl.

Macross Plus is also good, not amazing, just really good.

Gunbster/Top o Nerae!

I already talked about it in the other thread, but whatever.

This 6 episode series actually makes effort to fit in with science, and it really fits into the plot. For example, when you travel near the speed (supposing you can), you will age much faster. They totally make use of this to make some emotional scenes regarding friends, relatives, etc. If anything, it's a great space sci-fi saving-the-planet anime with lots of action and it made me cry too.

Most stores, even a Wal-Mart or something like that, carry this. Castle in the Sky was released on DVD along with a couple of other old Miyazaki films about a year ago. (Around the same time as Spirited Away) If you can't find it in stores, then deepdiscountdvd.com is cool, and you can probably find it on Amazon or something. It's well worth owning. The dubbed version actually isn't too bad either. James Van Der Beek does Pazu's voice and I think it works.

FLCL is definitely worth watching.
I'd also recommend Paranoia Agent, I believe the DVDs hit in Jan or Feb.
Don't forget Castle in the Sky (or Laputa, depending on how elitist you are).

I'd go more indepth into Paranoia Agent, but I somehow doubt I'd do it justice. Let's just say it involves talking plush toys and a rollerblading serial murderer who uses a golden bat to take care of business.

All you need to know is Hajime no Ippo. Then you can sprinkle some gungrave, naruto, goldenboy, ghost in the shell. Those are all great anime's to start out on.

I thought this would have been said by now.
He said "buy." Unless cheap Chinese knock-offs are your thing (or you happen to be fluent in Japanese), then I wouldn't exactly say Naruto has any place on a purchase list.

Anyway, just a few recommendations, most of which have already been made by others...

Also, in the not too distant future, you will be able to obtain these fine gems...

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (2005)

Paranoia Agent (October 26, 2004)

Full Metal Alchemist (January 2005 - Adult Swim Debut: November 6, 2004)

Samurai Champloo (January 11, 2005)

No one mentioned Outlaw Star yet? Weird. I remember when I was a noob, lots of people would recommend it. I never watched it until recently and I thought it was a decent series. Shallow, but decent.

Isn't Nausicaa already available on DVD?

226542.JPG

It was apparently released this past year by Disney and features voices by:

Alison Lohman as Nausicaa
Patrick Stewart as Lord Yupa
Uma Thurman as Kushana
Edward James Olmos as Mito

I actually STILL haven't seen this movie but have been wanting to pretty badly. It looks like it has that fantastic adventure feel of Laputa.

...and I can't believe I almost forgot to recommend this (I see it on your list but I'm assuming you've seen the original):

Another great feature-length anime. The animation and imagination all throughout this film are amazing. Another one of my personal favourites that I should really just pick up on DVD. Get Bloodlust, and NOT the original.

The DVD has been delayed to sometime next year (along with Porco Rosso and Totoro). I'm glad that I already got the R3 DVD of Nausicaa. :)

Nope. Pushed back till next year so that they come out alongside the theatrical release of Howl's Moving Castle.

Oh, and it is better than Laputa. It's my personal favorite Miyazaki movie. The only one of his movies that I consider to be "better" as a film is Spirited Away, but I enjoy Nausicaa more.

Also nice to hear about the upcoming, though delayed, American DVD :D

When's Howl due out again?

Captain Tylor was the only anime I bothered to keep when Ebaying off my "What the fuck was I thinking?" collection. That and Mononoke/Spirited Away at least. People who dig anime and don't own Tylor suck.

The only anime I regret not catching was Azumanga, given the people reccomending it to me at least. But it looked pretty typical and pandering from what I saw.

I'm surprised no one Tenchi Universe or the Tenchi OVA's. I'd suggest staying away from the Tenchi In Tokyo series (as well as the 2nd film-Daughter of Darkness), unless you're a completist. I'd also recommend (if you can find it) Battle Athletes. You might also want to check out Martian Successor Nadescio tv series. Oh, and you MUST see Escaflowne-an esquisite anime series, if there ever was one. And, for a good solid brainfrag, check out Boogiepop Phantom.

I've just ordered Castle of Cagliostro, Caslte in the Sky, Spirited Away, Jin-Roh, and Ghost in the Shell
