Reggie Fils-Aime on Xbox One/PS4 lineups: "Meh"

And he is completely right. The ONLY exclusive that matters on those consoles are Titanfall on the Xbox One, the thirdparty games can be played for the PC, so the only reason to buy these consoles at launch is the promise of exclusives in the future. The Wii U on the other hand, have awesome exclusives RIGHT NOW and a ton more to come untill the end of the year!

What? People only buy consoles for exclusives and play everything else on PC? WUT? This thread just keeps being gold.

Haha so many salty juniors in this topic trying to defend the PS4/Xbone lineup.

Reggie's right.

The problem for Reggie is that consoles are not actually sold for their games, at least not in the first three years, but for the promise of having a great future. That's why the PS4 will outsell XBone, even though the latter has a better immediate lineup. It's why the Wii sold hot cakes based on only Wii Sports, even though a single game is normally never enough to buy a console; because it hinted at a bright new future for interaction with games.

Right now Wii U's perceived future is that of a dwindling console quickly becoming irrelevant. You can use it to play rehashes of old games (in WW case literally), and will have one or two standout games. But in today's market where great games are released monthly, who cares. It's not about the games, it's about the idea of new game experiences. They really need to find a way to underscore why the Gamepad is necessary. But a year after Nintendoland's dud with nothing on the radar, it's not looking too good.
Really good perspective. However, I have to disagree that future prospects of a console are the main deciding factor.

If the current library is strong, the importance of the future viability of the platform dwindles, or vice verca.

The problem with Wii U is that it "neither" has a strong library ATM, nor a solidified future. However, However, by the next year summer, the library will be really strong.

His opinion on the matter is irrelevant at this point. The Wii U is a sinking ship and has had about 3 games worth playing since its release.

Once the software is there, the importance of future viability of the playform dwindles.

Yeah I also think it's a combo of both. WiiU had neither since around December last year :/
By Christmas it will have a nice lineup of exclusives, and into late 2014 it will be a rather impressive indeed. To late for many, but for those that stick around it'll be a treat.

His opinion on the matter is irrelevant at this point. The Wii U is a sinking ship and has had about 3 games worth playing since its release.

I don't think irrelevent is the right word. It's completely relevant: they are a console maker trying to push their platform, at a time when (as you pointed out) their console us sinking. Why wouldn't their PR departmemts input be relevant?

Which Zelda is he talking about? The Wind Waker reboot remake reskin? Or 'A Link To The ... we can't do a sequel justice, so this .5 Zelda game. Not even a Phantom Hourglass, really'?

Donkey Kong innovative camera angle, Madagascar penguin edition?

And is Super Mario 3D World coming out this year? That looks like it might be fun.

If Nintendo had SSB, the next 3D Zelda and perhaps a Metroid game coming out, I'd be inclined to agree. As it stands, it really is not an interesting line-up of games.

Their top game is a 10 year old gamecube game, which was the beginning if the downfall of the Zelda series.

Reggie shouldn't be bragging.

Are there really hardcore gamers (wanting to play something all the time) owning just a Nintendo machine? I mean just owning a Wii U might be an option if you don't feel like you need to play something new all the time but if you have even little interest in other games than Nintendo then surely you would own another machine with Wii U?

Or 360 or PS3 or planning on picking up PS4/XBONE...

From a hardcore gamers perspective sure the hardcore gamer probably owns another console but, from Nintendo's perspective why would you want a customer to buy another console to play games on when they could be buying the same games on your system. That is money lost for Nintendo. Take this years multiplatform games coming out for ps3 and xbox 360 that are not coming out for WiiU and probably should be if Nintendo had better relationships with third party companies Diablo 3, Nba 2k14, fifa 14, madden 25, gta5, battlefield 4, saints row 4, WWE 2k14, etc. That is alot of money Nintendo is missing out on and it also leaves a massive gap in Nintendo's lineup of games.

Normal people don't buy consoles for 1 game I think. They buy consoles because they know every month there will be 10 new games to choose from, for the next 5 years.

With the Wii U you don't get that.

A quick search on metacritic reveals that the WiiU has 63 different games released and rated by reviewers.

So two weeks ago Reggie and the PR machine say "Price Is NOT an Issue" then they cut the price. Now brags about offering a'value' package and other machines as 'meh'.

I wish I could stand in front of directors when my sales are in the toilet and say the competition have got wrong!

Agreed, but that's why I said not for the first three years. Could be two. I hope for Nintendo (and as Nintendo fan of old, for me) that it's two years. I reckon most people first buy a primary console based on future prospect, then, when they had their fill with that console, feeling they 'recouped their investment', a portion of those gamers will start looking for a secondary console. Ideally one that has a great set of games that they missed out on. Wii's forte was that it had both, the primary console for a large chunk of people who bought into motion gaming, and the secondary console for the interested-in-existing-games group at a lager stage.
Nintendo now has to hope the second group will turn the Wii U a profit.

Well I guess that is one way to talk about the games of the third parties you're trying to court.
Based on his comments it's safe to say that all negotiations have failed and that there will be essentially no third party games next year outside the occasional Ubisoft pity port.

Reggie is so bad at PR, at least when he is talking. His way of talking is bugging me to no end. We have Mario, we have Zelda, yeah. Wii U is so much more than that. At least he mentioned TVii.

Well, the competition is not exactly selling consoles yet. I think the Xbone will have a pretty rocky start as well. Not as bad as Wii U obviously, but still.

Lol. But pretty sure he's talking exclusives, isn't he?

Edit: at least that's how I read it. In all seriousness though, I don't think devs/pubs are reading that and thinking "he's dissing our games, bitch!"

How about.... Its cheaper to buy a console to play those games?

You seem to be assuming everyone has a gaming PC.... which is insane.

The reason to get one of the new consoles is for the games coming out on them. They have a few exclusives but also share a lot of the same games. So you pick the hardware/system you prefer and buy that and play the games on it. So there are tons of games coming worth getting the console for.

Also as far as the WiiU is concerned, if you arn't into Nintendo's franchises then there is no reason to get one. The only one I ever really like is Mario Kart and I don't exactly care that I wont get to play that either.

BF4 60fps 64 player on PS4 with option of remote play is more appealing to me than if you gave me a WiiU with all its current library. People have different tastes and this statement from Reggie is wrong in so many ways although totally expected as he is trying to sell the WiiU.

And if he was including multiplatforms, in terms of being a reason to buy those systems he could say meh without meaning that he thought the games are bad.

Killlzone Shadow Fall
NBA 2k14
AC4 (hopefully this turns out good)
BF4
Dead Rising
Watch Dogs
Launch day Indie game releases I am excited about

And this is just from the top of my head

This is more then enough for me, as I still have other games to complete.

What a narrow point of view.

That list is worth $1260, not only that but some of those games are even available on the Wii U

Anyway, Reggie is dumb. I used to like their class that they had on the Wii era... my my how things changed.

Good to see after more than 25 years , Nintendo and Reggie have it down to a science:

"We’ve got Zelda. We’ve got Mario. We’ve got Donkey Kong"

And people found the "'Have you seen Titanfall" comments funny. At least they try something new.

Wow that's like 1 new IP every 2 years among 4 consoles.

Why can't i hold all those awesome new nintendo ips?

lol

on the bright side you got only a couple of things wrong:

1) they're not on 4 consoles
2) it's nowhere near 1 IP every 2 years. I'll explain why: 6 * 2 = 12 years. As far I can remember the first of these games (Xenoblade) released in 2010 in japan, 2011 EU and 2012 in NA. The last one will be X in 2014. So it's 6 new IPs in 4 years.

keep on truckin' ! :)

Yeah I realize it's a blow to Nintendo. I was talking from customer's point of view and I'd argue that missing some bigger 3rd party titles is hardly relevant as long as the quality exclusive content keeps coming.

The amount of fuss Nintendo is making over their HD remaster is truly baffling. I guess they desperately need that third pillar for the Wii U this holiday, though.

Reggie will Nintendo have 1 account system soon?

"We’ve got Zelda. We’ve got Mario. We’ve got Donkey Kong"

Why do most Nintendo games lack online modes?

"We’ve got Zelda. We’ve got Mario. We’ve got Donkey Kong"

Why do did you drop the Wii philosophy like a brick with Wii U?

"We’ve got Zelda. We’ve got Mario. We’ve got Donkey Kong"

Why did you pick the confusing Wii U name?

"We’ve got Zelda. We’ve got Mario. We’ve got Donkey Kong"

I watched the Killzone gameplay video and wasn't impressed. It looks like something this generations hardware could do.

I agree with Reggie.

KZ SF, meh. I got KZ2 and while I enjoyed the campaign it was not an amazing experience.
DriveClub, meh.
Knack, meh.

The better games are all Multiplat IMO.
BF4, WD, AC4, CoD Ghosts

What is the issue with W101 exactly?

W101, meh.

Tough tits, they don't make games that don't appeal to you, that's cool. And it's funny about the whole new IP thing considering more than half of each console's launch is made up of third party game sequels. You notice that each console is also using their first party muscles as well, what with a fourth Killzone and fifth Forza.

I swear, sequels are only a problem when people want them to be :/

Are you going to conveniently forget the new Ips like Knack and Driveclub. Lol at third party games. Sony has no control over what third parties put out.

lmao, like any of those games will be a fraction of the fun of mario 3d world.

since when is killzone something to be excited about?

Even less when you look at first party.

He's got balls, that's for sure....but it's a stupid thing to say when the WiiU had one of the worst launch lineups a console has ever shit out and struggled ever since.
Sure the WiiU is about to have a nice wave of games, but where were the rest of them the last 12month? His attitude is huge FU to the hardcores who lined up on launch night.

I hate the man so much.

Xbone launch seems aight, if games like Crimson Dragon deliver.
PS4 is less than meh, even after launch. Theres more I look forward to on WiiU next year and Im already greatly disappointed by that one.

It's al about the games. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE GAMES.

Clearly they didn't go with that fancy slogan with the Wii, since it was a "unique experience" xD
