The thing Nintendo just doesn't realize is that the people who bought their consoles 20/10 years ago, grew up. And this generation just isn't that much delighted about a plumber when they got call of duty, halo and *insert shooter here* on other consoles.

There's always the diehard nintendo fans that buy every Mario goes shopping, Mario picks up the newspaper, Mario tells the kids to get of his lawn games. But those guys alone can't save a console which simply is ignored by the vast majority of 3rd parties out there. Those guys can't save a console which sells because of it's novelty controller, because let's face it... Nintendo's first party is not the power house it was 10 years ago.

They're pretty much "been there, done that". There's a reason that every Zelda after Majora's Mask, just isn't quite up to it's standard... because the novelty wore off.


But that's my opinion. I'm sure someone else's is that Nintendo is perfect and does no wrong and they go live in LALA land where unicorns are their best friends... but I'm more realistic.

Nintendo, in the home consoles business, is irrelevant. Either they launch a system with a novelty controller that actually grabs people's attention or they sell a system for 4 million people and hope that mario, zelda, pokemon and super smash brothers can save it.

Honestly, what do you expect him to say? Of course he's going to knock the competition and promote his own product. Just as I wouldn't expect Apple to praise Samsung when they release a new phone, I don't expect Nintendo to praise a competitor.

zelda games have been losing their appeal for me as the hand holding gets worse and the games get even easier. though, i dont know if TP was easier than OoT, maybe its just due to being a smarter, more dexterous person than my 10 year old self. WW was definitely easy as heeell though.

You calling him a Nintendo fan and calling what he said a "fall-back" doesn't make him any less right, although I think we know that when it comes to consoles PS4 will have the best version of Watchdogs and ACIV. And yeah people can call PS4 and XB1's lineups "meh" if they want. The Wii U having a "wafer thin holiday line-up" doesn't make the other consoles launches any less "meh" to some people.

I know I'm most likely getting a Wii U next month after the price drop, along with TW101 (I don't care how much of a bomba it is, I WANT THAT GAME). Plus there is other stuff I want on PS3 like Puppeteer and GTAV. I'll get a PS4 will be next year when it gets some more games I want though, I am loving everything I hear about PS4 but the games just aren't enough for me to dive in day 1, especially when I can get most of the multiplats on my PC.
 
Not gonna lie, I LOL when I read this considering how weak the launch lineup for Nintendo was but I still kind of agree with him. None of the titles that either console has for launch has me particularly excited. I either roll my eyes or say "that's kinda neat" but nothing that makes me say "I need to buy the consoles so I can play x" from either of the launch lineups from sony or ms.
 
Well everyone has different tastes in games.

And of course they don't talk about the tech. They sell systems with specs on par with 7-year old hardware for nextgen prices, of course they hide the specs.

Yea, I'm waiting it out for all 3, until probably next summer, but damn it gets tough to ignore sometimes, and i want to cave.
 
PS4 has a solid launch lineup, but so far, only 3 of the titles are exclusives , and none of them appear to be killer-app material. The rest consist of around 13 cross-gen ports (a few of which are late though not as late and not as many as Wii U had during its launch). I look at PS3 and I see bigger exclusives and one particular highly anticipated current-gen third party game (probably the biggest) that isn't coming to PS4 or Xbox one: Grand Theft Auto 5. So I can understand if not all Sony fans in particular, want to buy a PS4 right away.

Reggie presumably has some influence on things like Monolith's games being localized for North America and being marketed properly, so I would say he has just a little to do with people not knowing that Monolith is actually part of Nintendo.
 
Reggie is right. Unfortunately for him meh is what I'd use to describe the wii u launch as well. Lol, I only bought Mario when I got my wii u at launch. The only reason I'm getting more than one ps4 game at launch is because I sold my ps3.
 
Saying that they have Zelda is a bit of a cheat when it's an HD conversion. That would be like the PS4 launching with FFX HD, MGS3 HD, and GTA3 HD and saying that they've got Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, and Grand Theft Auto.

Haha. Best advice is wait til all 3 are out, established and have met a minimum threshold of games you must have. Then buy at/around the time when best bundles or deals occur.

That's if you're sensible.

If you're like the rest of us, myself included, go nuts and buy asap.

I actually disagree strongly with this assessment for people that have gradually grown distant from Nintendo over the past few years (or decade) as a result of "growing up"

I can still appreciate a Nintendo game that has high production values, that sets the bar high, that innovates, and that distinguishes itself far above its peers.

Titles like Mario Galaxy come to mind. These are "AAA" experiences just as much as you will find on next-gen systems when you're picking up the next Naughty Dog game, for instance (in my mind).

Problem is, Nintendo has actively gone against the AAA strategy for the better part of a decade or more. It's rare to see something like Metroid or Mario being given massive production values. And it seems like we'll never see a return to form for ambitious development from Nintendo whom, at one time, managed to shock the world with groundbreaking content like Mario 64 and Zelda: OoT.

They have fallen so behind when it comes to AAA development, like many Japanese studios, that it almost feels like they'll never be able to compete again. Instead of Mario 64, Mario Galaxy, or Zelda: OoT, we get derivative, stale, low-budget productions that are recycled ad-nauseum across their platforms. As a "grown up" gamer, I can appreciate something like Mario Galaxy....but when I see the New Super Mario Bros games and even the new Super Mario 3D world, it does not excite me whatsoever. There's a massive divide in quality of production that Nintendo seldom chases anymore.

Nintendo of today isn't nearly as exciting as they used to be, and I fear that their complacency with regards to the Wii's success has set them up for a disastrous failure for the long-term health of their internal studios.

Last time I checked, the PS3 is still $299 at Best Buy. And it doesn't come with an LCD screen built into the controller
 
Well he is right. You could say it is not fair to compare a year old console to launches of new ones but all he is saying is this holiday Wii U has a better lineup than those, and he's right. The Wii U has more exclusives releasing from now until December (not to mention the ones already out) than both Xbox One and PS4 will have this year put together. Wii U is also getting most of the third party games those systems are getting and in addition to a few more.

Whether you like Drive Club, Killzone, Ryse, or whatever more than Mario/DKC/Zelda/W101/Sonic/etc. it is pretty hard to objectively deny that the Wii U just has sheer volume this year and even if they aren't titles that float your boat, they are typically high quality games.
 
Well they are incredibly meh, infamous and forza are the only games I'd probably be interested in playing.

Still, the wii u lineup was even worse.

This is very true, good post. The Miyamoto software innovation days are over, most likely to be replaced by some new visionary in some other company. I guess we'll see. I still love a good Nintendo game, though-- sue me. :P
 
It's OK to think that, sure, but I think it'd be best to just keep quiet for the time being -- if I'm Nintendo... As someone who owns a Wii U, I have been presented with nothing but disappointment. I won't give up on them, but they're kidding themselves if they think that their current lineup is any better than a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One launch lineup.

Honestly, the only thing keeping me from getting rid of the Wii U is Bayonetta 2... (Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is another exception, but the list is very short.)

Jokes aside, though the Wii U might have some funky games, too bad the consoles gonna be sitting in barns. By barns, I mean in warehouses, for years, since no one seems to be buying them...
 
He isn't allowed to say anything else either way or he'll risk his job. Nintendo is far more uptight about this than Sony or MS.

Nintendo will have a stronger lineup of games this fall compared to other next-gen launch titles, if only because they've had a year to get some of their 1st party shit together

I agree with Reggie, he's comparing those consoles launch lineup vs Nintendo WiiU games after a year and he is right WiiU will have a great lineup of games.

In a year xbone and PS4 will have better then they have now but thats not now.

Not really. While Nintendo is definitely whoring out Mario more often now, and Zelda is getting to that point as well (though not yet), looking towards their other franchises as well as new IP prove they are still innovative. Recent titles like Kid Icarus: Uprising and Xenoblade are definitely not exactly like other games that have come before. Wonderful 101 which is just coming out now also is pretty brand new in every sense. Even Pikmin 3, which isn't entirely new, has a lot of cool new upgrades to the old (but only 2 game) formula, and it is still unlike pretty much any other game on the market. But feel free to continue to ignore these games since they aren't Mario/Zelda.

Plus, on the subject of Mario, let's not completely discredit a 4 player 3D platformer that we still barely know anything about. Where else has that been done before?

I rather buy a sequel to DKC, Pikmin, or even 3DL, and definitely original titles like W101, than just another shooter.

So yeah, Wii U library is already better than what PS4/X1 will get at their launch windows.

Objectively? Hahahaha. It's missing plenty of third party support. Huge games like BF4, FIFA, GTA. The WiiU line up is a joke in comparison to Xbone and PS4.

Can the same be applied to the Wii U's launch line-up? Absolutely, but what the heck does that have to do with this comment here? Reggie's 100% in the right, whether the Wii U had an amazing launch or wasteland of nothing. Wii U does in fact have a good lineup for the second half of 2013, maybe some aren't interested but hey - opinions. Reggie has to give people a reason to buy a Wii U over the competition, and frankly "we've got a better lineup of games available by this holiday" is a pretty good and very valid one.

Don't know why I see so many venomous reactions.

Whether they are successful or not has nothing to do with their quality. Nothing is going to be as successful as Mario/Zelda/Pokemon, and that's ok. Ignoring that the games even exist because not many people buy them though? I don't understand that. You said Nintendo is lacking in innovation, that is completely separate from how many units a game sells. They have innovative titles, if you aren't buying them then you are part of why they aren't as successful as the franchises that innovate less, which you are lamenting.
