The biggest selling point has always been 1 system so Nintendo doesn't fuck around and end up with fucking months of their users being a desert hunting for that oasis of a game cause of the droughts.

Plus to have an ecosystem that I don't have to rebuy shit just to have both versions is a God send since not all games even on PSN are cross buy.

Some games are fine with four buttons (maybe also trigger?) and one analog stick though. No one said that this kind of multiplayer was the only one offered. Local multiplayer using controllers on the TV will probably the main use of the dock and considering Pokémon and Monster Hunter you can rest assured that traditional ad-hoc multiplayer will be available as well. In that sense the hybrid would be quite flexible, offering (besides the shit that is online gaming) three distinct possibilities to play multiplayer, all of them fit for different styles of games (Mario Kart / Smash like games on the TV with controllers, simpler games like Mario Party on the go using only one handheld and communication based multiplayer on the go for Pokémon and similar games).
 
If what I have been reading Nx is going to appeal to the casual market as well as hardcore, then 1. it will be cheap , but 2 it will have an option for gamers to get a higher spec or add on.

Nintendo want to appeal to the masses again and if you think this could be a lot below the 200 mark then this will sell alone with just Nintendo 1st part wares.

lol this is what I've been thinking this entire thread and I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned more. How the fuck would you use that bottom right analog in any sort of comfortable way in these mockups. I feel like it has to be higher up.

The problem with this approach is that it will need Nintendo to put additional effort into supporting that add-on. What's the point in having a more powerful device if the games are the same?

Err... A project that went on ten years and two separate console cycles, and was shown in various forms is comparable to a game system announced 2 years ago that'll be hitting about 5 years after its predecessor system launched that hasn't been shown pivotally at all?

Ding ding ding. Nintendo has little support outside of first party. 3DS has 58mil installs WiiU13mil..you prioritize the moneyed platform. This way there is only the one. They can combine resources on the development side AND potentially get more 3rd party support.

They weren't going to win or even show in the home console market since Sony and MS are moving to even higher spec boxes.What do you do? You embrace your powerbase...the handheld market. Console users get a more powerful WiiU with more games... 3ds users get a way more powerful handheld with more games.

Unless Sony goes crazy... Nintendo will stand unanswered in the mobile market so theoretically it will get all those Vita devs potentially...and those games are also console games now. Vita users migrate or adopt.

EDIT I read people going nuts about how it is a bad handheld because xyz dual screen or a bad console because xyz no flops.com...or the truthers saying all the leaks are all wrong, but IMO this is how you make Nintendo great again. Concentrated Ninty.

We don't really know as of yet. But it seems possible there's a way for the HH to be used wirelessly or wired with the TV, though the latter scenario seems clunky to me if the cord is going all the way to the TV itself.

That's why I wish they'd push the screen to 1080p.

If they could make it high res enough for basic VR...the screen could go in a headset and you'd have controllers for it as well. I could really see the point in the split off controllers if their intent was to have a budget VR solution.

Bumping the retail price by $50 to include a decent 1080p screen and a basic VR headset seems worth it IMO..as you're covering all bases then.

At this point with dev kits so near to release, if these are recent or current kits I'm expecting circle pads to be in the final product. It seems to adhere best to Nintendo's design philosophies. I think I read ITT that when circle pads were in for Wii U it was at an earlier point in development than we're at now. I am sure there will be alternate controller attachments with analog sticks, though, and alternate controllers with analog sticks for use at home.

(Not at all meaning to rain on your parade, just trying to caution you to not get your hopes up in this regard so you wont be disappointed. ☺)

The setup is modular: dock, tablet, controllers.

Everybody has been talking about how the dock could be replaced later on, to give you a more powerful experience in front of the TV. But they could just as easily (in fact, more easily) provide an upgrade for the tablet (or release it as a second SKU down the road) to make it VR proof. I'm not saying they will, but it's possible. Maybe they'll wait 18 months longer, ensure they can get a more powerful GPU inside the tablet and at least 2K screens.

IIRC Circle pads were removed from the Wii U at the request of whoever was developing that iteration of Call of Duty so that they could have clickable thumb sticks.
 
All these mock-ups have the d-pad and right stick so far down they would be practically useless, does anyone honestly think that is a good idea ?

I think it is fair to say Nintendo Make games/consoles within their means, and what is affordable.

Affordable is important in different ways for the consumer and the company, putting a console together, developing games, and then how the consumer experiences these products.

I don't think it is bad thing being moderate with power.

With all the hype culture, having to sell 5-6 million units just to break even in modern game development ( MGS V), disdain towards Micro-transactions, DLC, Day one preorder bonus, game delays etc etc i thought that people may ease up on their expectations of what games are.

For me graphics are practically at a universal level - plenty of indie and Wii U games look fantastic. Everything else is a bonus.

Thats not to say more power is a bad thing, at times i been wowed by it - Uncharted 4, and the density of the cities in Fallout 4 for example, but i don't think it is vital ingredient anymore.

Out of curiosity, what framerate would this headset run at?

Maybe they can make an alternate model with 1080p and VR, but I don't want the regular NX to be pricey because of VR and 1080p (which isn't really necessary for a handheld).

Even the vast majority of the gamer consumer base would barely be able to tell the difference between 720p and 1080p on a 6-inch screen, especially Nintendo's market.

He's talking about VR though, when the screen would be close to your face.
 
All mockups have had a landscape layout so far. Why is this? The NX could have a default portrait layout. This would make virtual console games of DS and 3DS games possible, as well play whatever mobile offerings come from Nintendo, without much finagling. Also those detachable controllers might fit better.

I tried holding my 3ds xl with my thumbs in that position and it worked just fine. You should try it. It works best if you don't rest the corners of the device on your thumb meat.

Well I don't want the regular NX to be pricier because of the handheld/mobile elements I don't really want... when the guts could just be shoved in a small black box and connected straight to a tv for far less..

..but as I'll be forced to buy those aspects if I want to play the games on the tv...then I'd rather pay an extra $50 and at least get VR as well (as then at least I'd have a use for the screen).

But if it is higher up, then separately it will be too close to the center causing some considerable thumb strain.

I...actually agree. I'd like the simplicity of it all. Also it would have been cool to have a powerhouse Nintendo console. But if NX is weaker and that means Nintendo really has to be creative with artstyles to make up for it, that's fine by me.

It doesn't have to be realistic. Many Gamecube/Wii games in 1080p look pretty damn good in.

Give me Endless Ocean/F-Zero GX/Mario Kart in 1080p with GC/Wii graphics and VR and I'd be pretty happy with that.
 
People are giving Nintendo way too much credit to make a device with thin bezel. I bet 1 dollar the actual NX will have a very thick bezel all around.
 
a 1080p screen would lower the battery life.

It would be the worst "we heard the hardcore crowd" move to do.

720p with less than Xbox one power would be a tremendous jump for 3DS crowd. It would be also a slight jump for the small WiiU crowd. It would be a tremendous jump for the lost wii crowd. In all cases, considering all aspects, it would be the right move.

If they have to bump the retail price to include a better screen, they better use a 720p OLED instead of a 1080p screen that would do more harm than good for the reasons we stated countless times. But they won't, because they need this thing to be cheap.
