Everyone hates on CliffyB. Even when I go to GDC, I hear "Cliffy's an asshole". Then I met him one time and took a picture of him doing some stuff at GDC and had small chat. Nice guy.

On Twitter, he may be grasping at the "oh woe is me" straws a little too much. I feel for his failed projects, but the man needs to let it go or get his frustrations out in a book or something. Maybe join a dev team and work on a game in the current landscape. I dunno.

Yeah, if I was a game dev there’s no way I’d bother with forums, even as a person who still prefers them to social media, Reddit etc.

There just aren’t enough people on traditional forums anymore and too many of those that are left are very tribalized and politicized since GamerGate, Trump etc. With the small user bases, that environment makes it all risk and no reward as they’ll eventually post something that upsets the SJWs or go the other way and do something to upset the anti-SJW, “go woke, go broke” crowd.

There's very little chance of generating significant sales from having reps on traditional forums, but almost inevitable to end up losing a few from extremists who won’t buy things if Devs don’t fit every detail of their extremist worldviews. And potentially a lot if it creates an uproar that spreads on Twitter etc. Extremists have crazy views and normal people like most game devs are eventually going to post something that goes against those and causes outrage.

Best to stick to getting information to fans through their own social media channels where they can reach tens of millions and have a more controlled environment by just putting out trailers and info and not having team members participating as forum members in random topics and eventually rubbing some group of idiots the wrong way.

Maybe it’s worth it for Devs of some small niche indie game that will only sell to niche gamers and needs to eek out a few thousand sales to turn a profit. But no reason for AAA Devs who sell millions of copies to bother with forums where even every member buying or not buying their game is a drop in the bucket.

What I am trying to grasp at is why is it when people face backlash the first thing they try to implement is more oppressive solutions to problems that could be tackled in many less extreme ways. Toxic gaming is a thing, so its toxic fans at football games and other situations. How does one tackle a broad issue of what boils down to extreme assholes?

I don't get paid enough to think about it but I doubt going down the path of dictator level tool sets is the way to fix it.

The thing is, Rogan's position on it is pretty woke. Just not "insane woke." He's advocating protecting women and not allowing them to get pulverized by chicks who used to be dudes. Protecting women's health and rights is a very woke stance. And being that UFC is his life and he knows as much about it as anyone on the planet, if anyone can speak to this, it's him, as he's seen women getting beaten half to death by trans women. Like 99% of people agree with him on this too. It's not even some controversial take. The only people who don't agree with it are the crazies, and I've argued with a couple of these people before. They really have no argument. All they can do is say over and over "You can't prove biological women are weaker than trans women" and when you give them evidence they retreat to saying "well you can't prove that over time trans women don't lose strength and muscle mass and become the same as a biological women" they don't actually make any arguments for why this isn't wrong.

And he's backed his point up several times very rationally and clearly, but the hate parade just wants someone to spit venom at, despite this, and what better hate community than the #1 hate community on the internet.

Most people are fairly stereotypical in what they want to see and play, there's a reason why women mostly play cute, sexy and conventionally feminine characters in games and men play the conventionally masculine characters ( and why do men want to look like that? To attract women... Because it's what society regards as sexy in men. ).
The Korean and Japanese know this, and it's why they delibately put cute characters in their games and it's why their games are the most popular with women.
I remember in Blade and Soul the race '' Lyn '' were supposed to be evil and more monsterous, but the devs felt like they wanted to appeal more to women with them so they redesigned them entirely to be cute and it worked.
JRPG's in particular is the most popular genre amongst women in the West too last time I checked, and in every MMO I've ever played whether it be Western or Asian women make their characters look cute or sexy and very feminine.
The Final Fantasy series oozes femininity, it's not your conventionally masculine fantasy. And it has a massive female fanbase.

There's a reason why things are the way that they are in games and why they're designed around conventionally masculine and feminine traits.
Because that's genuinely what the overwhelming majority of both men and women want.
Resetera represents an incredibly tiny minority of people and even then it's just a vocal minority on Resetera too, most people on there don't even talk about this stuff and are just trying not to get banned.

I mean yeah, whoever posted that is right.

You can maybe get away with it if you're Naughty Dogs or some other big AAA game Sony exclusive that mainly sell based on fancy and movie like visuals and '' cinematic experiences ''. But in general people aren't and don't want to be '' they/ them '', people think it's fucking obnoxious.

Also, if only women could kick people in matches then everyone would just register their account as a woman.
And less women would play to begin if gender was more '' agnostic '' in a game, I can't remember what the study was called but I do remember reading way back about how women actually care more about the gender and presentation of their characters in games and movies than men do.
And I do think that's true, you typically don't see women play games where the characters are more masculine but you do see men play games where the characters are more feminine.
