Well they did try lighter bans and warnings but apparently, it just didn't work. (According to the mods)

Oh my god, PLEASE do it! Ban Dunkey! He's more normie than Angry Joe and probably has more actual contacts in the industry as well. This is also going to piss off a lot of the userbase that's almost sort of cool with the culture there. This is going to be amazing.

Like it's already nuts that the biggest individual Youtuber is banned there, but the thing with Pewdiepie is 1. he doesn't live in America and so he's more tangentially connected to other content creators rather than the industry itself and 2. gaming isn't the biggest focus for him anymore and hasn't been for a while.
Dunkey is different. He's basically the biggest gaming internet personality that doesn't target children and is well liked among developers and other content creators alike, with even some journalists going to bat for him even if he managed to piss some off over that one video game journalism video.
Banning him is definitely going to cause some resentment among some "connected" people that still post there. It'll just be another thing to add to the pile alongside them bullying John from Digital Foundry off the site.

Era has really good SEO, so people that find the place naturally are going to end up signing up. Then you got some people that have inflated its level of importance in their minds like communities looking for leaks and whatnot, so they hear about the place and try to sign up as well. Of course you also have to take into account trolls and alts signing up.
That said activity levels and unique posters are always going to be the metric to watch rather than actual membership number. New sign ups do indeed outpace bans in the long run (at least for now), but conversely, they do not outpace members that go inactive. Active posters number in the 4-6k range (not taking into account active alts) when at one point it was 8k+. Right now, that number is supposedly on the decline, but it's hard to know because there was a hardware failure involved in the method to find these numbers, so who actually knows at this point.
But still, the member count on the front page means nothing if only 1/10th of that number actually posts regularly with that number seemingly not getting any bigger.

the user numbers of the banned accounts still stay in the total count
the number you should look at is the unique posters which has been on a downward trend ever since the site opened....if your site was healthy and the userbase was growing that number would be on a very sharp trend up
but as Reee is internet cancer its slowly rotting away while they are eating their own
