Maybe I'm an outlier, but I've been diagnosed with all kinds of crazy crap. I told my doctors to shove it and just started working on myself. I've had friends on meds and all they ever do is whine about life.
I have chemical imbalances : exercise, nutrition, and finding new passions still helps. I have my off days but unless you're seriously off your rocker, I'd always advise going for an alternative to medication. Shit can be so bad for your kidneys, etc
You need to address the problem at its root. One way or the other
I had a period of depression, I didn't know why I was feeling bad until a friend said she recognized the symptoms. So I went to the doctors, got some pills and the moment I felt normal again I got the fuck off them quick. I've never had any issues since, I've got a feeling for some of those people that they use the pills as a crutch and let the illness be their whole identity.
Also the fact that the US is a for profit medical system so therapists are incentivized to keep up their "Client" base.
Most of those people would be better off getting a dog.
