Resident Evil 9 Began Development as An Open-World Multiplayer Game – Rumor

Missed opportunity for it to be a battle royal extraction shooter rogue like *checks notes* live service gacha. I hear those are doing well rn.
Replace the shrinking dome with encroaching waves of zombies that you have to fend off while trying to find an escape in the middle of the map. Would probably be fun for five minutes.

Spinoffs whatever fine...a lesson or two, just don't fuck up a mainline entry. And this here is a clear example if no one really cares about the RE IP going off track just stop fiddling with MP then just move on. People love this series for a reason, just give them exactly that and grab the money.
Why is this so god damn difficult for videogame companies to understand these days? They never should have entertained this in the first place!

Doesn't mean much if the same shitty core is there.

Granted stuff like Devil May Cry started out as one thing (i.e. a Resident Evil game), but at least it started out as something good.

With this, I think it's more a matter of "Start off with garbage, likely end with garbage."
I'm guessing it's still going to be an "open world" game. I just hope it's closer to God of War than Far Cry

As long as it doesn't use RE Engine...
What? RE Engine is really good. I don't think there's been a problematic game released on the engine so far.

It's like RE5 and 6 all over again. Square does this with Final Fantasy too.

They make a successful franchise and they think they have to out do themselves, so they throw away what made the games popular and make a completely different style of game and call it a sequel.

Did they? I mean, of course I didn't really think to include Mercenaries and I wasn't sure if it was really multiplayer based as I've only done solo. Also, I never touched Revelations 1/2. But I was always under the assumption that Outbreak was the one the community loved the most.
Raid mode is cool, think of it as solo/co-op RE5 Mercenaries

Outbreak was ahead of its time, hard af to play solo, so you kind of needed to play with others as every character had its own abilities, like Leon knock-off had the Handgun, while the Asian girl had a backpack allowing the team to carry more stuff in total

Capcom can make great co-op RE games, but awful MP portions for the series, they keep trying and failing every time

Resident Evil 9 began development as an open-world multiplayer game, and though the game was rebooted, the current version retains some of its original premise.

No way capcom is this stupid, at best game gets some online multiplayer mode and thats it, if it really would become gaas i would lose faith in humanity.
I mean we had one japanese pub go with that strategy(ff11/ff14) but now WoW is at the end of its lifecycle and almost all gaas shit games falling left and right :)

It's very bad for sandbox games. An Open World RE game in RE engine with a multiplayer component is a bad idea. It's why DD2 and MH Wilds have the issues they do. For a linear structure like REmakes it's decent.

Why will they not just stop trying to shoehorn multiplayer into these fucking games?

No one wants it you retards :messenger_tears_of_joy:
Because execs always see multiplayer as long term engagement, meaning they want that sweet whale money.

RE6 was so damn awful.

But smart move to sell it as a numbered entry…
Would have for sure sold more compared to the case where they would give it a name instead of a number.

Anyway let's hope not too much of it is left and they will more focus on single player again.

Honestly what were they thinking, if Naughty Dog needed to give up, although having full Sony support, there is. I chance that they could make a successful one.

My memory just got zapped with that... "game" they released along side crapmake3 with the running away from a mastermind or some shit. And there were cards. I don't think anything flopped harder than that. And if this rumor is true I see exactly that happening again.

Outbreak was indeed WAY ahead of its time and I really don't get why they haven't revisited that specific MP concept, everyone has high-speed internet nowadays, everyone is online and online MP has been big for decades now.

Instead of wasting time and resources on those failed, mediocre as hell and tacked on MP modes of the latest RE games they could just have made an Outbreak title ffs.

Then again, this is Capcom we're talking about, which, being completely honest, they've gone the super-safe route of either remastering/remaking old titles or, keep pumping those sequels out, they've stopped being creative most probably due to production costs skyrocketing but then you keep thinking of who exactly from Capcom actually thought something like REverse and Resistance would be a good idea...

Hey, at least they figured out it was the wrong direction. I'm all for developers trying new things, but this sounds like it shouldn't have left the pitch session lol.
But some asshole still got them to burn millions on a path that basically disrespected their established fan base. That is a problem.

Man, why is Capcom SO adamant about multiplayer and Resident Evil? It's SO weird to me. I feel like the only thing that got it right was Outbreak, and bizarrely enough everything they've tried after it was nothing like it, lol. At least they backed out of it here.

I'll still never forget working at PAX (can't remember if it was East or West) and helping setup the booth for the weekend and saw Capcom's booth was setup and I heard they had something new with them. I ran over to check it out as they were letting exhibitors play and I soon found out it was Umbrella Corps. My immediate reaction was, "Wtf is this and why?!" lmao.
It sounds like a sm2 ripoff.

RE8 was so bad that i have no faith in RE9 unless it's in third person. And after DD2 and Wilds being extremely disappointing, i am beginning to lose hope in Capcom.
I enjoyed most of 8 but DD2 and Wilds were so disappointing. So repetitive and too freaking easy .. Japanese devs have all jumped on the bandwagon of making games easier than ever to appeal to the "modern audience". Speaking of modern audiences Capcon has also been censoring all their remasters lately ...I still consider them one of the better devs in the industry but they have taken a turn for the worse this gen there's no doubt about it.

I'm thankful they are releasing so many ports and remasters of great older games I missed out on in the past like Darkstalkers, The Punisher, MvC2, and Capcom vs SNK series tho.

Open world Raccoon City? Exploring beyond just the RE2 & RE3 areas, doesn't sound so bad. Unless it becomes a copy/paste collectathon like Assassins Creed games.

Sounds like a cool idea but also sounds fucking boring to just walk through a big city mowing down slow ass zombies. It would've been like the "serious" version of Dead Rising.

I agree, RE8 really was poop. Some segments were promising (House Beneviento) but it just felt like it didn't know what kind of game it wanted to be. Awful plot and dialogue. The beginning of the game seemed cool and then it just fell off the quality cliff.

The beginning of the game is the reason i bought it. What a mistake.

It's no secret capcom has wanted one successful MP entry forever now. They want that Fortnite money.

It sounds like though this new RE game likely will retain open world or be much larger in scope. RE8 shows that's where they are headed.

I think the closest we got to this idea was evil within 2, and I found that game awful compared to EW1.

I trust capcom and RE team to execute much better than tango did.

We need a trailer already showing Leon and Jill damn it!!!

It's crazy this even went past an instantly rejected pitch at some meeting. Specially after the success they've had with the remakes.

"Yeah, that's what people want for the next mainline entry. An open world multiplayer game"

What? RE Engine is really good. I don't think there's been a problematic game released on the engine so far.

RE engine is fucking awful for anything but linear games.

DD2 and specially MH Wilds look really dated and run like absolute shit. RE is probably the worst modern engine for open world stuff.

I wonder when RE starts to lose its place again. They've been hitting it out of the park for a while now. The budget for 9 seems to be its biggest they ever done. Sometimes that can be a disaster. Hope we will see it shown this year.

RE6 had by far the biggest budget ever for a RE game at its time and it was absolutely awful. With capcom we can never know

Rumour or not, I'm not surprised by it. Capcom are on a good run, and RE still exists/thrives because it changes, but Capcom ALWAYS get in their own way sooner or later with this MP RE nonsense. There's an audience for it, but it's not the one they want, and too often they devote resources that could be used on guaranteed wins to try and get a market they have zero chance of getting.

Others have already said Outbreak, and rightly so. There's no reason they couldn't make a modern Outbreak, but they refuse in favour of things no one asked for. So the idea of a mainline title being at bare minimum a redux of RE5's forced co-op seems perfectly in line with their MO.
