Oh, while we're on monster designs, I want to bring up Dead Aim. I brought this up in some old Resident Evil thread a year or two ago, but I love the part of Dead Aim where you go to the B.O.W. disposal facility and meet some rejected B.O.W.'s. It's a mixture of incredibly dumb, but also strangely frightening. Weird monstrosities against nature; I think they pulled off the weird hybrid of being both really dumb, and yet also somewhat creepy thriving in the dark disposal place surprisingly well. And the concept itself is really quite cool.

And can't mention Dead Aim's rejected B.O.W. disposal facility monsters and not mention the giant monster vagina that shoots out terrifying monstrous semen.

i feel like that idea is super great but dead aim totally crosses over the line from ridiculous to straight stupid for me in it's monster designs

you could easily use that concept to make really horrific and grotesque monsters + creepy atmosphere, especially with a living environment deal similar to the carla chapter in RE6 but instead you get lumpy frogs and bees

or everyone's favorite doofy looking enemy, hunters
seriously it's incredible how the gameplay+soundwork design of hunters serves to make them feel super threatening in REmake/outbreak when they look so dumb

Isn't this really just what Resident Evil Zero was? :p

But yeah, Dead Aim was an interesting one with it's designs. Without having to even look them up I remember that weird vagina semen launcher but I also remember (slightly more fondly, not much though).

It was unremarkable but I remember thinking WHOAH when you could see it's brain literally hanging out of it's head in front of it.

I remember thinking the Tyrant was one of the worst in the series though with those shitty claws that weren't even claws.

Didn't realise that Cavia worked on Dead Aim? They'd go on to work on Umbrella and Darkside Chronicles.

It definitely could be expanded, but I liked the segment a lot. And the baby, multi-eyed, drooling Hunter-looking things. I also liked the fat tyrant who's head literally explodes part-way through the fight and he just waddles around with a dangling brain near the end of the fight.

I kind of wish it was expanded though, definite room there for growth, but I personally liked what they did in the segment (though it could be explored in a far creepier direction, I agree).

As I was just typing when you posted this, the head exploding and brain dangling was a nice touch and definitely sticks out, even if the fight was a bit dumb.

And I also agree with the 'experimental' tentacle Tyrant, it was the worst of Dead Aim's designs in my opinion.

And I believe Dead Aim was one of their projects. I've grown more fond for Dead aim over time, actually, but it definitely isn't an A-tier entry in the series.

I love all the creature designs from RE1-RE4. 0 was the worst in the series just being boring animal/bug mutations. RE5/6/REV1 seemed way too anime for the series. Espically 6. Even in the Umbrella Chronicles extra chapters were full of anime looking monsters. Like that weird alien looking Mr.X.

I love the crazy Tyrant creatures in the Outbreak games. Love the more humonid creatures. Lisa, Birkin, Salvador, IT, Mendez, Nemmy, Tyrants etc are incredible

I don't know why but I fucking hate the Outbreak tyrant. I think it's the speedos. They are such a simple addition and yet the speedos just make it look odd.

I agree that the Ivan Tyrants were fuck-awful but I don't agree about the modern REs. Everything in the mainline series has been fantastic from a design standpoint. Well not everything but a lot of it has.

I like that the enemies in 4, 5 and 6 all have thematic consistencies. There's the Plagas in RE4 and the black tendrils in 5 and the chrysalids in 6.

Wait, how are these:

More "anime" than these?

So many boobs. Both of those creature designs look like they stepped off of DMC/Ninja Gaiden. Nemmy was terrifying and the blind wolverines fit perfectly in the castle setting. Nothing anime about the blind guys.

Manu

Then we have vastly different definitions of what "anime" is.

I mean, if you don't think a giant malformed guy in a trenchcoat with a rocket launcher for an arm is more anime than Rasklapanje, then I don't know.

Can we talk about how badly CV's story was butchered due to censorship? It has a ripple effect on the rest of the series.

The Ashford family was originally the Krueger family, German aristrocrats associated with the Nazi Party. Before the fall of Berlin, they escaped by submarine to a South American island where they enslaved the inhabitants and constructed a concentration camp, gradually eradicating the inhabitants. When the family helped establish Umbrella, their military knowledge and experience made them the center of the company's paramilitary operations.

Alfred (Hilbert) was a Nazi fetishist chiefly inspired by a Nazi lieutenant who served his grandfather, his role model in lieu of his incompetent father. Alexia (Hilda) was head of a German laboratory of Umbrella when she was nine, before graduating university and becoming head of the Antarctic Laboratory at ten. The reason Alfred is so military-obsessed is because Alexia once called him her "soldier ant" and emotionally manipulated him into her servitude due to her vastly superior intelligence. It's pretty much a sibling version of Psycho.

Edward Ashford is the most mysterious of the three founders simply because his entire backstory was cut. The reason he helped discover the Progenitor Virus and establish Umbrella was to fulfill the prospect of creating the superior human race envisioned by Hitler. Alexander advanced the CODE:Veronica Project using the genome of the Krueger family's famous ancestor, a model "superior human", as a base. That's why Alfred and Alexia possess blonde hair and blue eyes. They're incarnations of Hitler's idealized white race created as a sort of stop-gap to facilitate true evolution by sprearheading the family's efforts to create a strain of the Progenitor Virus able to create superhumans, since Alexander was incapable and Edward was old (then dead).

The eugenics theme of the series has always been there but it's quite glossed over until BIO5. Wesker references it in the first game when he says "the t-Virus has the power to create life surpassing Homo sapiens." It's then heavily focused on in The Wicked North Sea novel with the aristocratic Beardsley family and its current head, who was genetically and technologically engineered to be a superior human. After that it fades into obscurity until Gun Survivor reveals that Umbrella think of themselves as superior, while CV takes a very restrained approach with Alfed and Alexia's creation. Each of the scrapped BIO4 stories also focused on it.

Umbrella was formed and run by aristocrats who all desired to cement themselves as superior to normal people. This adds a little more to Marcus, as he's the only one involved in the company's establishment who wasn't born into nobility. He was purely a man of science striving to enhance humanity, ironically just like Birkin, who killed him and stole his research. While those involved in Umbrella were complicit in Spencer's ideal of creating an advanced human race, they didn't know he intended to exterminate the existing humanity (including his business partners) and repopulate the world with model humans groomed and indoctrinated by him, his own "Spencer Youth."

Wesker himself had always aspired to use the t-Virus as a means to enact mass extinction and forced evolution, but he had no intention of becoming a god until he met with Spencer in 2006. He viewed it as his moral duty to eradicate and remake humanity for the good of the world. He basically followed the Agent Smith mantra of "humans are a virus." This was partially because he was emotionally stunted and unable to relate to other people by lacking basic emotions, something that was severely underplayed in the series and actually makes him rather tragic. His official biography in BIO1 says that he lived a life of self-affirmation to cope with it. "Self-affirmation theory contends that if individuals reflect on values that are personally relevant to them, they are less likely to experience distress and react defensively when confronted with information that contradicts or threatens their sense of self."

So simple that it's creepy. The final boss in the outbreak games seemed like a good natural progression to the original 2 Tyrants

oh that reminds me

i think the tyrant design looks really dumb
every single one of them
they're just big grey guys with cheap looking claws and bits on them!! they look like they stepped out of some mystery science theater d-tier movie

edit:
this isn't including nemesis who i think kinda-sorta is alright? he certainly sells the concept of a more complete bioweapon more than mr.x or any of the tyrant models
seriously they're just so dang goofy
mendez is another design i forgot about that works really well overall. i always forget about him because i can never remember his dang name but that fight is incredible as a whole and probably the best boss fight in RE4 period?
it's a tie there between mendez and assignment ada krauser for me

If I had to cut it down to 2 creatures than my top 2 are

1) Lisa
2)Super Salavdor

I wish they would have put Super Salavdor in the main game as a boss. Too wasted on mercs mode

I knew a lot of this from you previously, and I do admit I wish they had gone the full Nazi route and exploring Umbrella's heirchy and contrasting reasons for a similar objective a bit more.

The Wesker thing comes off partially in the games, but not fully as it does come off as him being more overconfident and cold simply because of having no interest in it rather than inability or stilted growth. Funnily, the only time I can think of in the English current-direction scripts Wesker ever comes off as insecure or thoughtful about this is in the original RE1 down one of the paths when Wesker is talkinh about how beautiful the Tyrant is, and Chris just laughs and calls Wesker pathetic, which Wesker (in-game almost seeming out of character but making more sense in this context) sounding hurt and asking him to stop it. That may not be intentional, or a translation thing, but I always found that scene a but odd, and it makes more sense to me in that context. It always almost seemed like he was seeking Chris' approval in that scene, or thinking showing this to Chris woukd make him understand some underlying truth.

---

As I've said before, I'm in the camp I like some things of the original Resident Evil scripts and concepts/details more, but I like some elements of the translations more (namely, I like how they handle the characterization better, personally). The email would be a sign of a change I personally like even if it wasn't there originally. But that's just me, I like the sort of hammy RE characters, but I prefer the more detailed backstory of the original scripts.

Birkin definitely has my favorite monster designs in the series. Specifically these two forms:

They manage to be both super disturbing body horror designs, but also really intimidating and cool as well

The characterization in the localizations is inconsistent at the best of times since it goes through the translator, then the voice director, then the voice actor, all of them making changes along the way that are never approved or even seen by the writer. Generally, there's not a whole lot of difference in the original and localized characterizations. They're just heavily exaggerated in English, typically. The translators are rampant with Flanderization and severely lacking in the art of subtlety, not to mention lacking in even basic background knowledge of the story... but usually take any opportunity they can to pretend they know what they're talking about.

Agreed. While the tyrant from the first always fueled my imagination, Birkin's art was a whole 'nother level. Loved it then, love it now.

The art direction in RE2 in general is so good. I love all the vibrant, poppy colors and bold designs.

I actually also really like proto-tyrant in RE0 HD. He's got a gnarly design and I love the way he twitches and spazzes like an iron maiden. It's pretty creepy stuff.

My opinion may come entirely from my preconception about the series before I got into it (I used to be a huge scaredy cat, I only got into the series with RE4 and then moved back to play REmake and so forth from there. I got a hand-me down Dreamcast from some neighbors who were moving to college from their parents, and I got rid of their owned Resident Evil games at the time since I wasn't interested in 'scary' games.). I always thought the series was intentionally hammy and reflective of B-horror films, from what I had heard from others and knew from what I saw. But I liked the unirthodox tone, cheesy stilted dialogue, and such things. That may just be me, but maybe as a result I generally find myself more often than not liking the changes in dialogue or personal quips they add in the translated dialogue than not. The opposite can be said for the mythology (for lack of a better word), which I've learned about a lot more through you.

I think his design got a big upgrade somehow in the HD Remaster. I know its not all THAT different, but the design had never really struck me at all until the HD Remaster, even though I had played and finished Zero three times before then (the last time playing it before the HD version was even just a couple years before). I haven't compared exactly what it is they changed, maybe details are just more noticeable now, but he does look a lot creepier and the subtle twitches are a nice touch.

Birkin's designs were absolutely preferable to any of the standard Tyrants. Along with the whole 'continuously-expanding biomass' thing, his first two forms manage to reconcile the general idea of a hulking humanoid predator with more tangible indicators of body horror, also helped by highlighting the fading remnants of Birkin's humanity. The head visibly absorbed into the torso on the second form and barely present on the third is a great touch, for example.

The entire line is made-up by the translator.

I'm kind of surprised they'd just make up something from whole cloth without any relation to the actual content of the text, but it always did seem a little out of place.

That reminds me, was Alexia in Darkside Chronicles supposed to be this 12-years-old girl in a body of an adult woman or was that just the idea of the translation and/or voice director? This was one of the changes I really disliked in the DC reinterpretation of the story: her voice, the way she talked, her playfulness - she was a completely different persona than the cold, calculated and confident CV version.

The script doesn't give any implication of it. Most of her childishness in DC has to do with her voice acting and the resulting cutscene direction, since they only record voices in English and the cutscenes are animated as such.

Just contact EviLore directly and ask for an account.

I don't know. Maybe it's the same for everyone.

I'm joking. I'm pretty sure she could get in if she wanted in

So is anyone actually looking forward to Umbrella Corps? I was kind of excited because it looked like they might be adding in all these famous Resident Evil locations to play around in.

But when I saw that latest video in the Tricell Offices...... it just looked fucking boring. The shooting looked so flat. There was a Cerberus but it looked lost and bored too. Just nothing.

It might be mindless fun, something to play with friends!

I'll probably get it and ace the single player challenges and mess around online, can't really see myself getting too much into it unless the game surprises me.

I do hope they announce a co-op mode for it though, since there is SP challenges.

Removing the filter in Resident Evil 5 makes the game look odd. I think I'll keep the filter on.

Doesn't bother me that much.

I'm looking forward to it, but I wouldn't say excited. It's not the direction I want the series to go in, obviously, but I'm open to it. I have some friends I know will definitely be buying it and I'll be playing with, and familiar locations/enemies/other things is nice. However, I do think there's some things they could handle better... I am not that fond of the zombie jammer mechanic, I get it and how it could make matches tough, but I think it doesn't look good and is mechanically less interesting that monsters are on idle until your jammer is damaged. And the animations, crawling speed, and shooting look like they could be much tighter is my biggest gripe.

I know the more recent hands-on impressions have actually been pretty positive, but I kind of also want them to go all out. Bring back whatever locations, I want more crazy monsters than just the zombies/dogs/Ganados/Majinis... The basic 'fodder' enemies. Hopefully have some fun modes, interesting twists.

I'm okay with the idea of the game, especially as I know we have other RE games coming out on the horizon outside of it and I understand it's a spin-off, and even one I'm willing to try. I just hope they don't have it to bare-bones and have interesting content to explore outside of just shooting each other, and that the game feels responsive and tight to play, which it doesn't look in videos thus far.

While people complain about the 'piss filter' in RE5, I actually think the filter works in the game's favor and is used rather well for the game.

I know the visual look is also inspired by this one movie I am spacing on the name of right now that uses filters very heavily also.

EDIT: Black Hawk Down, that was the films name! Definitely is inspired by that, and the creator cited it as inspiration as well.

FWIW: I'm actually more hyped about Resident Evil REmake 2 more then RE7.

I never played RE2 because I was a gullible child and I believed the zombies could reach over from the TV.

I kinda know what to expect with RE2 now.

Whatever comes out of RE7, people are not going to be happy with if it's not more RE6.

I'd be down with buying RE6 on Steam during winter/summer sale if it's at a $20 or less.

If resident evil ever went straight on action with just monsters you wouldn't see me complaining.

I want RE7 to just be a more focused 6. Really nothing else needs to change for me. Also the game goes on sale on steam for 9.99 every year.

Black Hawk Down?

I would be more thrilled with RE7's existence if I knew there would be a main protagonist who is black or if one of the main protagonists was black.

It's been awhile but isn't there a black character in RER1?

We've had Sheva, Josh Stone, Keith Lumley, Mark Wilkins, Jim Chapman, and Lawrence Kimbala in terms of playable black characters. Really only Sheva has been a main character. Josh got some DLC in RE5, Mark and Jim were in Outbreak so it was your choice or not to play as them, and keith in Rev1 just had a few moments. Lawrence was much like the outbreak characters, you could go the whole game never playing him.

Josh should be back

I'd like him to get some kind of attention going forwards, he could easily show up in a Revelations down the line if not a mainline game. But when even Sheva seems to be completely ignored outside of throwaway mentions (she wasn't even in Mercenaries 3D or Revelations 2's Raid mode), I don't know what his chances are like.
