Why is it that the Umbrella Corporation developed the T-Virus?


Were they privately funded by our government to develop Biological Weapons?

Is it just the academic sum of their research in the field of genetic engineering and manipulation in order to explore and attempt to understand both natural and simulated evolution?

Is it to create death resistant tomatoes?



I mean to what point and purpose did they invest all the money, time, man power, and research to create the T-virus? Where was the motive or profit? To what intent did they have?
