I had planned to buy this day one... a huge RE fan, but never played this one or 5. Is the aiming-with-a-left-stick issue really an issue? Seems like a chore.

Unless you play shooters all day every day in which you aim with the right stick, you should be able to adapt reasonably well.

Maybe PC version has gimped boobs.

I just found out you can rotate the items in the attache case by using the right stick. You can put the ammo boxes in backwards so you can't see the label. Mind blown.

My mind has been blown! OMG

I'm positive there's a delay on the reloading sound effects. You hear the clink from the ejected round on the rifle well after Leon has finished the animation.

I've also noticed a few sound glitches in the PS3 version. I've had some sound cut out a couple of times and I think I also noticed some dialogue audio sync issues.

By the way, back on the topic of the bad button mapping: for the record, the PS2 version has a type II control set that's identical to the Gamecube layout. That's exactly what this version should've had...or better yet, customizable controls.

RE4's control should feel perfectly fine compared to all prior RE games. The thing that really got me back then was all the people praising the game for fixing tank controls: they didn't. In a way, the game controls the same, it's the camera that has been changed.

All prior RE games require you to stop, aim with left stick, and shoot, therefore it's practically identical.

I finally made it all the way to 1-3! lol.

Any tips on
how to beat the freak with the chainsaw? I only did so after unloading 16 shotgun shells and an incendiary grenade at him :/ Waste of ammo

What's the best way to conserve ammo in general? When there are packs of villagers coming at me I just tend to panic and unload all my ammo into them.

I forgot about aiming with the left stick, but once you get use to it, its no big deal.

You can run away, but it's always worth getting their item drops. Just shotgun rounds up close is about all you can do for now.

normal gun>one bullet headshot>kick>knife till enemies gets up>repeat
Only use shotgun when you are overwhelmed by 4 or 5 enemies.

I have too much bullets and first-aid stuff, I can never pick up stuff lol.

This starts working less and less the further you get into the game iirc, but if you shoot them in the leg or the head, they'll go into a state where you'll be able to kick them when you get close enough to them. You'll also kick other enemies in the vicinity, and it'll save you quite a few shots as a result, even more if you run up to them while they're downed and start using your knife.

Takes a bit of practice to be able to tell when they're able to be kicked and when they're not, but I rarely run into issues with ammo with this method.

They didn't fix the movement controls, true enough, but the aim and shoot control is totally revamped, and it's a huge relief. The high/middle/low aiming in Resident Evil always annoyed me: to shoot someone in the head - a key tactic - you would usually be aiming over their head. In RE4, you shoot where you aim, and the location-based damage and reactions, and the strategies you can implement based on them, are a big part of what's so great about the combat.

Exactly. The combat here is perfect. I never beat RE5 but for some reason it never captured me the same way as RE4. Did they change something fundamental about the controls from RE4->RE5? I don't remember.

Just got to the famous "Lava Room". This game still looks incredible, mostly thanks to the art direction but the HD helps too. I've found that the castle holds up better visually than the village. More colors overall, crappy textures are more forgivable because they are pieces of a beautiful whole. Would I like a full retexturing of this game? fuck yeah, but I'm really not disappointed with this HD port at all.

Playing as Ashley is a pretty cool segment of the game. This is one example of a design choice that might strike one as being very annoying actually working quite well. Other examples being the escort missions in general, especially "shoot the enemies who are attacking Ashley" segments that would be incredibly annoying had they not been implemented so perfectly.

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
Played until after the lake "incident" in RE4, god I still so fucking love this game. Due to the HD resolution I even found a green and a red herb which I didnt see on my previous 5 playthroughs :-o

Also sniping enemies got a shit ton easier :)

The money you get for killing chainsaw guy is worth however many shotgun shells it takes, as long as you aren't wasting them by missing or shooting him from too far away. The game will provide you with ammo if you need it. As long as you play a little bit conservatively and knife guys on the ground when it's safe to do so, you'll have plenty of ammo to the point where it keeps you from picking up other stuff you want.

As for conserving shotgun in general, always aim for the head, and always wait until at least one guy is really close to you. Someone suggested you should only use it if there are like 5 enemies, but I think if it's your first time through the game you'll do better if you lower that bar a little. If there are two guys closing in, by all means try to shotgun them both (with one shot).

It gets better and better

the hedge maze is crazy. I was close to death, with little ammo, running from my life from those stupid dogs

I don't remember what my favorite game of 2005 was, but it was incorrect.

How disappointed am I going to be if I play re5 next?

Just got the Achievement for killing Verdugo. I remember having so much trouble with him the first time I played... I must have wasted the rocket launcher on the Garradors.

Is there actually a point to the crane late in the game? I've played this game loads of times since 2005 but I can not remember one single time when it actually grabbed anything :-/

Not at all? RE5 is awesome.

Bought and started playing through RE4 HD this evening, played for 5 hours straight. Lol
Never finished it on Gamecube so I figured I'd give it a go. Game still looks great, new textures would make it look amazing though. A lot of the game seems easier than I remember.

Where is it located at? Been many years since I last played it, can't remember.

Before the hedge maze there's a door you can't open...you need to have Ashley with you to get it open. She stands on your shoulders and climbs through a window to get in.

Once you've played through as Ashley you have to backtrack with her back past the maze to go get the goodies.

The crane in the
end boss fight
?

You can
wait until Sadler is right in front of the platform where the switch is and then flip the switch - it'll smash into Sadler, giving you a free shot at his eye-mouth
.

The one in the trash room? You can grab at least two enemies and throw them into the pit before they turn if off.

I got a dilemma. Maybe you RE4 masters can advice me. You see I upgraded the main start up gun to lvl2 on all categories. Then I got the Punisher or whatever its called, gun for free from merchant. That one is a little better on lvl1 stuff. At this point I have 2 hand guns and the shotty. *running out of space too*

Now the merchant has a new hand gun for sale thats better than both of the old ones. Red9 or something. So I wanted to buy that one so my question is, is it ok to sell the old guns? Is there a benefit to lvl up the old ones to max level or just buy the newest gun and get rid of the old ones if inferior compared to the new ones?

Like Im used to having the little safe box to store additional crap and never knew this game never had it so its weird to sell off guns and stuff...wish I could just store them away incase I want to collect all of them and maybe level them up later in the game. Anyways, buy Red9 or something gun for the 2 older guns?

The Red9 is the most powerful handgun. The other ones have their useful gimmicks, but this is the best. I'd go with that for the whole game, sell the Punisher.

Maxed out Red9 has 6.5 firepower. Don't upgrade the first pistol. I always sell the Punisher when I get it for 10k, and you get the Blacktail in the castle a little later on, if you don't upgrade the Red9, upgrade that one instead.

I've still never used the Red9. Always went with the Blacktail. What are the Red9's other advantages other than the power and stock?

I've also never used the mine thrower in all my playthroughs.

As far as upgrades, I never upgrade guns until I get the final version of a weapon. Never upgraded the first two regular handguns, the first rifle, or the first two shotguns.

No, you can use points. One the payment screen you'll see it says "Press X to use points."

Anyways, this game has some of the best lightning ever in a game. I'm on my Pro playthrough right now, and it looks incredible.

Wow thanx for that info guys! Its my first play through so Im like little overwhelmed with so many guns and not alot of space for them! I will sell the 2 older ones and buy the Red9. Good to know about the other guns too like the shotty or rifle.

Also dont get the hate the controls get. I mean Im like a big FPS/TPS guy and can easily get used to those and this game's controls are fine for the gameplay. I even invert 100% of the time for all my shooters and for this one (maybe uncharted too, dont remember) I left it regular! :O Kinda weird im breaking my own rules but the gameplay is fun!

If you complain about them, you are just being stubborn or wont take a few mins to get used to the controls. They are easy, jesus, coming from noobie RE4 player.

My first few runs have been Red9, but I've since switched to Blacktail as my favorite pistol.

That's all there really is to it. More damage per bullet means you'll kill things faster and save more ammo. And it looks bad-ass. Oh how I wish it showed up in cut-scenes.

I've also never used the mine thrower in all my playthroughs.
Neither have I. I hear it's only worth getting for dicking around.

For all of you just getting this game now, you should pretty much do this. In fact, don't even buy the Riot Gun. The first shotgun is good enough to last you until the Striker. You only thing you really need to be using a shotgun for is close range crowd control. Damage output isn't important, knocking everyone in front of you on their asses is.

Power is pretty much it. Blacktail is better in every other category. But power is the only one that really matters to me... I never find capacity or reload speed to be a big deal. I'm pretty careful and rarely ever get into a situation where I need a big handgun clip.

The locational sound is definitely messed up on the 360. I just did the "big room" fight (after the first blind dude) and not only can you always hear everybody stomping, jingling, and shooting arrows from anywhere in that huge room or small sub-room, it always sounds like everyone is right next to you. Boo.

Yes. For all of you playing for the first time, excluding the Red9 there are three 9mm handguns, two rifles, and three shotguns. I think you get the last handgun and last rifle right at the beginning of the castle, and the last shotgun near the end of the castle.

Also, is it better to use yellow herbs right away, or mix them with red/green herbs and wait until you actually need to use those? I've been doing the latter in all my playthroughs.

I've noticed some audio issues on the 360 too.

Salazar's initial laugh when you first enter the castle doesn't echo. There's also been some sound lag later on, like something might happen, and all sound will drop out of the game for a couple seconds, and then come back in fast-forwarded in order to catch up.

Sure. Now play it the way you have it set up, dozens of times over the next 6 years. Then see how it feels to switch. It's not the end of the world, but it's damn annoying.
