Ok it seems as if the patch for worldwide online play is out, but it looks like I have to DL it from the Japanese PS Store. Is there any way around making a Japanese PSN account to get this?

I think it's more like an old message stating the map pack will be out on 6/1, which it never happened.

There is nothing on the Japanese store and devs have said patch+new maps will be released simultaneously on 6/7 cos they need each other to work.

welcome to you

On another note, I played Resistance coop for the first time this weekend and Halo 2 for the first time in both coop and local MP.

SP progress update:

I have beaten the game on Easy and Medium and am currently half-way through my playthrough on Hard difficulty. So much more fun than the lower difficulties were but I'm starting to notice a lot of little presentation things that they can work on for Resistance 2, which I find myself looking forward to more and more.

Some of these complaints are more of a flashback to 6 months ago when I first got the game but I noticed these again when I was playing through the game with a friend who was new to the game and I found myself apologizing for the slow ramp up of the game and some of the other things I'm gonna mention. My friend is also a super HARDCORE Halo nut.

Here are a couple things: mission variety (go here, kill that, how about something else), pulling switches, the game could use more checkpoints after major firefights (getting really frustrating on Hard, probably not gonna play through on Superhuman because of it), and harder endings to stages (I want to feel like I know the end of a stage is coming, it seems kind of random).

Coop

Played Resistance in co-op for the first time this weekend, and I gotta admit, it was pretty fun but the interface also seemed REALLY clunky compared to the Halo 2 coop interface (which I also played for the first time this weekend). I had a lot of fun but there were also a couple collision detection bugs in coop too where my partner got stuck on a couple things. The pointer is also not very helpful at all when you're trying to lead someone around and it's not opaque at all, so it tends to be distracting so you can't leave it on all the time.

Halo 2 MP comparison:

Halo 2 local MP was pretty meh compared to Resistance. Interface is super clunky and it's hard to see the important facts you need to know like health, ammo and other important things. Also, SLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWW and the floaty jumping was pissing me off. In Resistance, I jump to avoid getting sniped and giving my opponent an easy headshot. In Halo 2, I don't jump so I can avoid getting sniped and giving my opponent an easy headshot. The weapon balance in Halo 2 is also #*^$@* terrible. Halo 2 MP is pretty inferior on all accounts, based on my experience.

This is all out of the box stuff since I don't have access to LIVE to play online or download any balance patches, but what is there is pretty disappointing.

The only advantage Halo 2 has are the many MP game modes.

Rumble

Having rumble back was also jarringly annoying. I used to like it or not mind it, at least. The only other application in a PS2 game that I can remember caring about it one way or the other was in SotC where the horse footsteps would vibrate the controller and that was also somewhat annoying.

The Halo 2 music is awesome so far. Resistance could use more electric guitar in the soundtrack, but I'm just a guitar nut like that. :D

Funny thing happened to me and my friend when we were playing, he got stuck on the level that has you climbing up huge tubes and was all dude I'm stuck. So I was like ok I'll just kill you. He was like ok...wait noooo(boom hedgehog):lol at his body falling. And really was your friend that new to gaming that he had to be led by you and the arrow? We got more annoyed that we were accidently turning it on.

OK So my PSN just decided to die and isn't reconnecting me :-(, thought I'd take this time to complain at the amount of people spawning behind me. How am I supposed to mount any kind of kill spree in ffa when I always have someone that's invincible and that can see me even before they spawn poping up behind me?

That's it...I'm gonna find the SOCOM headset SOMEHOW. I even went to the Sony Store and they had no clue...those clowns.

Never played Half Life 2 so I can't answer that.

I'm looking forward to digging into Orange Box when it comes out though. :)

HL2 deathmatch isn't included in the box though. I am sure Resistance Online is better than HL2 deathmatch since a lot of people are playing it but I don't like twitchy online shooters at all. I like somewhat slower paced FPS's like Halo and Battlefield

JB1981: Maybe you need to play more objective games than DM (I prefer obj games over TDM in Res). BTW, do you have the Warhawk beta? Maybe that's more your cup of tea and when you play Res you realize that it's not for you.

I think it's a natural reaction when you try to avoid the enemy. You keep moving in one direction as you try to focus your shooting on the target. So you tend to circle it.

I guess I'm slowly beginning to prefer slower FPS's as well.
I think Halo 3 beta is vastly superior to Resistance. Don't kill me, guys.

I play a lot of Objective games with the GAF clan. I personally have never enjoyed Deathmatch gametypes, so I tend to avoid them as much as possible.

Yes, I'm in the Warhawk beta and I very much enjoy it when it's not freezing.

Never played it. I don't think the clan is full of fanboys (unless you guys have secret meetings), but I know that we have a really good time. You might be interested to read my first impressions of Halo 2 a few posts up. I think I had some pretty fair criticisms but I also had some praise for it too. Still working on playing through it.

I'd like to echo something Kittonwy said last night. I have spent more time playing this game than I have playing every other FPS ever made. Outside of RPGs, this would pretty much apply to all the games I've played. FWIW, there's quite a few people in the clan that have said something similar but the game has seemed to hit a sweet spot for a lot of people in a similar way to what Halo did on the original Xbox.

I've played Resistance heavily and I can tell you you're most likely enjoying it so much for the fact that you're playing it with people you know and don't take it too seriously. That's perfectly good and all, but a lot of people play these games competitively. There is a lot wrong with Resistance MP, but it does a lot right too. Resistance 2 really should support mouse & keyboard like the next Unreal is supposed to. Fine tune the aiming, adjust some of the guns and add some new game concepts and you've got a winner.

When you are in a fast paced game, circle strafing is the way to go. Perhaps that is why you enjoy Halo more, it's far slower. Halo and Warhawk (never played Warhawk, but this is what I gather from vids) have battles on a larger scale. With Vehicles and turrets and all that jazz, the combat is very different.

Res is more like UT, it's a fast paced game with unique weapons and circle strafing is the first thing you learn to avoid death. You often find yourself in a position where you are dueling with another guy, and while that's the case in Halo 2 sometimes, there isn't much to the duel, in fact I find it to be simplistic (as compared to Halo and Halo 3) because of the emphasis on dual wielding.

BTW, tanod, play Halo rather than Halo 2, it's better in most ways.

I don't think a game like this needs KB and Mouse support, it plays EXCELLENT on the controller as far as movement and aiming goes, IMO. I think most agree with that sentiment. The ratio of vertical to horizontal sensitivity is just right, and the auto aim is near perfect as well (I think it sticks too much when it comes to vertical aiming...but it's not a big issue, though I think other will also agree with this as well). The acceleration used is just right...I don't think people understand how much of a challenge it is to get these right, especially for a fast paced game like Resistance.

I'm one of those who has played a lot of online FPS games, and while I think Res is great there are a lot of issues with it that I don't think you have noticed because it's probably one of a handful you've played. I don't want to go into the negatives...but if Insomniac is interested from my perspective, I'd be happy to post it in a specific and quantitative manner. Y'know, if work for Res 2 is gearing up... :)

The most apparent positive quality of the game is the great online performance coupled with the number of players and the size of the levels. The second most apparent positive quality is the unique multiplayer objectives. I like these so much that I'm willing to overlook the flaws.

If it weren't for the recently added Assault and seemingly increased frequency of Breach, I'd probably would have jumped over to Halo 3, UT 2007, and Warhawk and NEVER look back. And I'm sure a lot of FPS players would have as well. But as long as there's Assault and Breach and as long as I get to play them quite frequently, I'll be still playing Res even when these other games are out. This last point is my own personal opinion and the opinion of others on this point could be completely different. I play Res for these modes...not for it's TDM. I don't make a fuss about it when we play online because others enjoy TDM and I don't want to dictate what we should and shouldn't play, plus TDM rounds don't last a super long time and it forces me to brush up my one on one killing skills. Note: My beefs with TDM are more to do with how it's implemented, I don't have a problem with the concept of TDM (I play it in so many other games).

tanod

when is my burrito
Nrxic: I would be interested to hear your beefs with TDM.

Also, I didn't say that Resistance is the best game I've ever played (it IS great) and I did talk about its problems (in SP). I didn't talk about problems in MP. I was just comparing my experience in Resistance to my limited play time with Halo 2. I have just been spending a lot of time playing it recently, but have also been playing a lot of God of War 2 and Final Fantasy XII so it's not like it's the only thing I'm playing right now. :p

I don't equate time spent with a game, to the amount I like a game. I spent over 90-100 hours mastering FF8 and had a good time with it when it first came out. However, I don't like it very much now, viewed in the context of other Final Fantasy's and other games.

For FPS games, I have played and enjoyed: Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Heretic, Quake 1 (modem MP FTW), Quake 3: Arena, Half-Life 1, Golden Eye, Time Splitters 1 & 2, and Halo. So Resistance isn't the first I've played, it's just the one that I've spent the most time with. The only other that comes close is Quake 3 which I played while I was in school.

More Halo talk:

I also have played quite a bit of Halo 1 on the original Xbox and PC. I definitely enjoyed most of it. 4p MP on Xbox was a lot of fun. MP on PC wasn't fun as much as I would get sniped all the time by the more experienced players. This was back in the day before match-making. AI, in these games, is pretty damn impressive.

It should be noted that I also like the world they created around Halo and I'm looking forward to finishing the Halo 2 SP campaign, since I've borrowed my friend's XBOX for this next month or so.

hehe this happened to me when I played the Wake Island Battlefield 1942 demo, I simply couldn't go back to twitchy shooters like UT after that. This is for online games only though, doesn't effect the quality or enjoyment of single player.

The Wedge tactic explained:

The "flying wedge" is the term given to our tendency to mob together in a violent swarm and shoot the everliving hell out of anyone who dares get near us. It leads to multiple assists per kill which leads to a 20-60% increase in points. 16 points for a kill is far better than 10!

It does not, despite its name, resemble a true flying wedge - although generally whoever is at the front of the pack will get gunned down while those behind break through and destroy the opposition. So maybe it's not completely inaccurate.

Message from IG:

Hey all-

Insomniac Games and Sony Computer Entertainment are happy to announce that we will be instituting a new ban policy for Resistance: Fall of Man online gameplay, effective immediately. Players may report cheaters using lag devices or using exploits to leave the intended playable area. Make a report by sending a private message to the MyResistance.Net "cheating" account (username: cheating). Cheating and the use of in-game exploits is not allowed in any game type, including custom and private games.

To enforce this policy we have in-game moderators documenting players who are involved in using, discovering, or sharing exploits with others. These moderators have the ability to join and observe any game or user in ranked, custom, or private games without the knowledge of the players in those games.

Initial bans for first-time offenders will be 24 hours. Bans will grow in length with each successive rules-violation, and attempts to circumvent a ban are grounds for an extension of it.

If you have questions, please feel free to post them in this thread.

Thanks!

Thanks! I still can't believe it. I'm still shaky from the adrenaline rush.

It was FFA, Grimsby (32P), Chimera. All kills were bullseye and carbine ... no laark, no shotgun, no grenades. It all happened in a flash, Lots of bus yard and surroundings. Mid game I ran out of bullseye ammo, followed by a mild panic attack, but I was able to finish the game with a carbine. I moved a lot to avoid any revenge related deaths (that stopped my previous spree at 15).

This game doesn't feel like HL2: Death match, to me.
Death Match felt completely disorganized and random, to me. Which can be fun sometimes....
Resistance didn't feel this way. Particularly if you play teams with the right people.

I like slower and faster FPS games about the same overall.
Sometimes, I prefer one and sometimes I prefer another.
I just hate the switch from the faster paced ones to the slower paced ones.
Playing a game like UT and then playing a game like Halo throws me off and frustrates me and takes me quite a while to get used to.
The switch the other way... doesn't bug me.

tanod: I'll go into details later on how I feel TDM has fell short in some areas. To some, they are gamebreakers, to myself it just a turnoff, and to others they don't mind them. But I'll list them and I think most people would agree to some of the points.

I'm gonna hop online here within the half hour...I won't have a mic though.

Core: KB and Mouse support gives an aiming advantage, and controller support gives an advantage in movement. Unfortunately in fast paced games movement is quite erratic and quick so the movement advantage is nullified. So in the end KB and M guys will have an advantage over controller guys. Though I was under the impression that servers could be set up so that they would only allow one or the other (or both) in their settings.

I beginning to feel like that tonight. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. It takes me awhile to kill them and I aim for their heads yet it takes like 3 secs for the enemy to kill me with full health.

When me and an enemy both shoot (shotgun or tag) at the same time, 99% of the time, the bad guy wins.

I blame my internet, I seem to be the last to spawn when matches start ;/

Good luck man. Hope you find fun in other games.
