What a weird Resistance match I "played" just now.

I got an invitation by a buddy of mine. It was a deathmatch with 8 people in Nottingham (smallest version).
When the match started, I didn't see anyone at all, but I could hear them battling it out, gunfire, explosions etc.

Resistance really was the most enjoyable single player FPS since Halo 1, IMHO...and the multiplayer is only second to the Halo series. I think they could improve the single player campaign significantly with a few key improvements:

1. Level design diversity. Resistance had a lot of gray, gray/blue, and dull orange areas. This may be the art style they were going for, but I'd prefer a slightly more vibrant and varied color scheme. Make the levels look unique...the entire Nottingham section of the game with the alien architecture mixed in with UK's landscape was brilliant. Viper's Nest/Conduits in particular. It just looked really stunning with the amount of geometry and detail in the levels. Same goes for the Tower section at the end. There were some levels that seemed a tad too dull and similar looking. Otherwise, one of the best looking games I've seen, and pretty impressive for a launch title.

2. More enemy diversity. Most of the game had you fighting the same typical enemies. I'd like to see a bit more unique enemy types, and perhaps enemies with huge scale and/or bosses.

3. Main Character: Really generic. I don't think that Insomniac could have even made a more generic character for their series. Bald space marine? Check. Typical WW2 clothing? Check. Really seemed uninspired. I think the sequel should opt for a more unique and prominent lead with a better supporting cast of characters. Halo is pretty strong in this respect.

4. More vehicle support.

Otherwise, I can't wait for Resistance 2.

No, there isn't a Resistance 2 suggestions thread... this seems to be the appropriate place, there has been a lot of good feedback posted here so far and it gets read by the Powers That Be.

Good news everyone, the servers are going to be updated tonight (6/28 and you'll be able to download the update in the morning! The Resistance: Fall of Man map packs are now here! But there are many other important features and fixes we want to call out beyond the two all-new environments and the worldwide servers availability. You can get the details in the patch notes below, but some of the highlights include:

* Being able to view your PlayStation Network Friends list from our in-game lobby
* We're offering an in-game method for reporting abusive players
* Voice chat through TV speakers if you don't have a microphone
* Clan leadership transfer
* Human character lip syncing and facial animation control (great for machinima!)
* Penalty time enforced on people who frequently quit ranked games
* Ranked games that become unbalanced prior to launch will automatically be canceled in the lobby.

Thanks again for your continued patience and support. As always, please feel free to send us feedback about the maps and the patch on our MyResistance forums. We DO listen and we check the boards frequently.

Full notes follow:


* Resistance: Fall of Man Map Pack 1 now available for download! This map pack contains both Westmorland, England and Camborne, England. Both are additional multiplayer maps designed to be played with Resistance: Fall of Man. Westmorland features snowy hills and Chimeran architecture. Great for snipers! Camborne features both above ground and underground fighting introducing a new twist on team battles. Both maps support all Resistance multiplayer game types. You must own Resistance: Fall of Man to play either map. To make purchasing and downloading the map pack quick and easy, there is now a “Purchase” button on the main online menu. Going to the “Purchase” menu will allow you to select, purchase, and download the map pack from within Resistance.

* Worldwide Servers! Now you can play with your friends anywhere in the world since all Resistance servers are now connected to allow for worldwide play. There is a new option in the “Multiplayer Options” menu called “Worldwide Player”. Setting this to “Worldwide” will allow you to play games against other players all over the world. Setting it to your local region (North America, Europe, etc) will restrict your games to only allow other players from your region to join, and will guarantee that any players you are matched against when playing ranked games are from the same region as you. If you create a party, your party will use the Worldwide Play setting from your multiplayer options (ie, if you are set to “North America”, only north American players will be allowed to join your party, but if you are set to “Worldwide”, anyone can join). Players who are set to “Worldwide” may still join games created by players who are set to their local region only as long as both players are from the same region.

* The XMB Friends list is now accessible from the R:FoM Lobby. To access it, go to “Community” and select “Friends”.

* The “Map Vote” option has changed. There are now three settings: “No”, “Free Maps Only”, and “All Maps (Map Pack Required)”. Setting “Map Vote” to “No” will allow anyone to join who has the map that the game is being played on, setting it to “Free Maps Only” (not available if you begin the game on a map from the Map Pack) will allow players to vote for any of the free maps and allow anyone to join the game, and “All Maps (Map Pack Required)” will allow players to vote for any maps, including map pack maps, but will require anyone attempting to join the game to have the map pack. “Map Vote” will default to “Free Maps Only” for any of the free maps and “All Maps (Map Pack Required)” for any of the map pack maps.

* There is a new filter on the “Find Games” screen for custom games: “Map Packs”. It has two settings, “Free Maps Only” and “All Maps”. “Free Maps Only” will show only games that do not require the map pack, and “All Maps” will show all games.

* The “MUTE” menu from the in-game start menu is now the “MUTE/REPORT” menu. Selecting a player from this menu will allow you to select either “Mute”, to mute all voice chat from that player, or “Report for abuse”, which will notify an in-game moderator that the player is being abusive by cheating, glitching, or otherwise violating the EULA. In-game moderators will then be alerted, and may observe the player to verify that he/she is being abusive. * Voice chat from other players will now play through your television speakers by default unless you have a headset plugged in. * Repeatedly failing to finish ranked games (either by quitting or disconnecting) will now incur a time penalty wherein you will not be allowed to join another ranked game immediately after failing to finish one. The time penalty begins at 0 minutes, and will build up to a maximum of 15 minutes if you fail to finish a high percentage (30%+) of your ranked games.

* Clan leaders now have the option to transfer clan leadership to another player from the clan menu

* Human player models will lip sync with incoming voice chat from that player

* If you have a USB keyboard attached to your PS3, holding down the buttons “1” through “0” will change your characters’ facial expression (human models only)

* Ranked games that become too unbalanced in the staging screen will be canceled by the server rather than launching with unbalanced teams

* In the lobby, L3 is now always the push-to-talk button so that remapping the push-to-talk button does not prevent you from being able to chat in the staging, party, or results screens.

* Player names drawn over friendly players will no longer be blocked by low cover to make it easier to distinguish friendlies from enemies.

* Players may now switch the virtual keyboard over to the full QWERTY style keyboard rather than the standard virtual keyboard if they so choose

* The staging screen in a deathmatch game now has a header to show you what race everyone will be when the game starts. Additionally, the loading screen will now also reflect what race you will spawn as.

* For Chimera vs Chimera team games, the skins used by each team have been changed to be more distinct

* For games with limited lives (such as conversion), the “QUIT” option on the in-game start menu will change to say “LEAVE” after you have been eliminated to indicate to you that you will not receive a Quit on your stats for leaving after being eliminated.

* Fixed an issue where you would hear splashing sounds on levels without water

* Fixed a problem that caused bullseye tags to sometimes remain active after the player they were attached to has died

* Fixed a number of potential collision exploits

* Fixed a problem that caused the rocket launcher reticule crosshairs to disappear when meleeing while a rocket is being held stationary.

* The per-team “Time Alive” column for team conversion now displays the correct stat rather than the total team score.


Resistance: Fall of Man Update 4 FAQ

* What does the “MUTE/REPORT” menu from the in-game start menu do?
o The “MUTE” menu from the in-game start menu is now the “MUTE/REPORT” menu. Selecting a player from this menu will allow you to select either “Mute”, to mute all voice chat from that player, or “Report for abuse”, which will notify an in-game moderator that the player is being abusive by cheating, glitching, or otherwise violating the EULA. * What is the difference between “Free Maps Only” and “All Maps (Map Pack Required)” for the “Map Vote” game option? (Custom games only)

o The “Map Vote” option has changed. There are now three settings: “No”, “Free Maps Only”, and “All Maps (Map Pack Required)”. o To make purchasing and downloading the map pack quick and easy, there is now a “Purchase” button on the main online menu. Going to the “Purchase” menu will allow you to select, purchase, and download the map pack from within Resistance. You can also purchase the Map Pack through the PLAYSTATION Store online.

* Help! I already bought the map pack but I didn’t download it or the download failed, how do I download it?

o From the Playstation 3 XMB, sign in to the Playstation Network and select “Account Management” from the rightmost menu on the bar. There will be a “Transaction Management” option, which will take you to another submenu with an option for “Download List”. Select “Download List” and then scroll down until you find the Resistance: Fall of Man Map Pack to redownload it.

* How do I play the new maps from the map pack in a Ranked Game?
o There is a new ranked game type available called “Map Pack Mayhem”. This game type includes all team and FFA game modes, and allows parties to join as well as individuals. Later we may roll the map packs into the normal ranked gametypes, but for now we’re giving people who purchased the map pack a way to guarantee they’d be playing on those maps.

* How do I open my PLAYSTATION Network Friends list from in-game?
o From main online menu, go to “Community” and select “Friends”.

* How do I access the new character customization options?
o The new character customization options will be unlockable by a code made available to players who have registered their PS3 accounts on MyResistance.net, in a similar way to the Cloven skin. We will provide more info at a later date.

Great feature list. Stuff i wanted and some stuff i didn't know i wanted (cancelling unbalanced games)
 
wow, i just re-read it. Alot of great features listed there but...

JStevens, i didn't see any mention of the player limits for breach and assault being lowered. Did that actually happen in the end, or was it decided against?

So basically this update was a bunch of unneeded things like player lips moving instead of fixing the shotgun. Only thing I saw that needed to be added was the tag fix and second rounds that don't auto balence being cancelled out.

Darn it I'm trying to be negative but the Resistance whore in me can't help but be happy to wake up tomorrow morning.

yes its a shame they added gameplay features instead us helping you and I not die lol. I told you the other day, they feel like they has already addressed the shotgun damage to get where we are now : (

Still i want to know about break and assault games

oh hey did you snag stardust? im still on the fence. I dont want to take away from resistance right now, but i cant play tonight anyway right?

Are you saying the human player lip syncing when you speak into the mic isn't necessary?? :lol

If there was one other change I wish they could do, it would be changing the color that enemies appear as in rage mode. The facial animation stuff sounds REAAALY interesting. How is that gonna work?!?!!??

Aeon, they wouldn't release that they changed the damage of certain weapons, like the shotgun, because that would just alert people to other possible exploits. The carbine headshot thing I could see as an exception since they want to encourage people to use the weapon properly.

Not yet, I'm still at work but will when I get home at like 11:30 :(.

Argh I never even get close enough to notice they aren't moving already.
 
well i use that black ops gear all the time so it wont matter too much here. now if the superhuman skullhead talks, thats would be outstanding.
I never saw that coming as a feature, and its pretty sweet actually. I guess thats WHY they're Insomniac.

maybe you could use it to distract people in the tournament. Just starts singing maroon 5 and the new lip sync will make him laugh his ass off ginving you the chance to strike like a puma.
 
Thinks harder. wait... if it will lip sync to you.... won't it lipsync to anything you put up to the mic? like music?.... Thats it im gotta here, there no way we're going to get any games won now LOL. In my head, i see kittonwy standing in front of 3-4 other gaffers all lip syncing to Kitton's Itunes list. the Horror!!!!

That's a server side fix and not a patch feature. believe it is still happening.

There are so many crazy awesome things in that update list....

I'm not really sure where to start.

Actually, I'd like to bring up one thing: NO MORE "TAG-STICKING" !!!!!!!

Oh, and your character lip-syncing to your mic input is pretty cool, too. And the ability to make different facial expressions with a USB keyboard.

Gametype Changes

* Assault and Breach mode games have had the number of players required to create them lowered in Team Objective games, and the likelihood of these modes has also been increased.

* Chimera vs Chimera Team Deathmatch has been removed from the Team Deathmatch gametype.

* Conversion in the Free For All gametype has been changed so that players will have 5 human lives and 1 Chimeran life instead of 1 human life and 1 Chimeran life.

Nooooooooooooooooo, Now I really have to ps quit when I see Conversion pop up in FFA. And what was so bad about Chimera vs Chimera. Also whats the point of changing the skins since Chimera vs Chimera doesn't come up in objective?

Beautiful! Wonderful! That's what I like to read. Friday's like Christmas except you have to pay for it, but I don't mind one bit! :D

What an awesome, awesome update!

I really like the features that:

-draw friendly names more effectively

-staging screen tells you what race you are and what race you are playing against.

-more distinguishable skins for Chimera vs. Chimera team games (I didn't notice a difference for the longest time, but it was pointed out to me that there was, this is going to make things even better!)

-"LEAVE" option in conversion. Well, I never had to quit anyways since I was always one of the last few guys :D.

-fix of the bullseye tag being stuck on dead guys.

-FFA Conversion rules changed to make the rounds longer

-increased likelyhood of playing Assault and Breach

Now as far as the removal of Chimera vs Chimera TDM...I like that decision, but I can't speak for everyone else. I suppose that if you could view each other with differing colors in rage mode, it may help. But I think Human vs. Chimera makes for great TDM matches, so I don't miss this.

Thanks Insomniac! Hope you guys are able to sell a lot of map packs!

I think they dislike it since it requires less "skillz" or something silly like that.

Sorry your guy's skills aren't up to par. Maybe IG will be nice and weaken the shotgun more to match your defense skills. :) (Why did that smiley have to go?)
