Can you post a link to your YouTube channel?

Well, sure. Thanks for asking. Nothing fancy, but I've really tried to improve my quality since my first vids, which were of Streets of Rage 2. Bought new equipment and software, trying to get a bit looser on the the mic (and now camera). It's been a really fun, positive experience even though it isn't exactly setting the world on fire.

I'm doing a play-through with my 10 year old of Double Dragon Neon which we've really enjoyed doing. This kind of thing can be a great way to engender a love of the classics, or forgotten genres, in young people.

Loving the Zelda 2 love from Peltz btw, one of my favorite games ever. Im 32 btw.

I finished it about a month ago on 3ds using save states. Agreed that it's a much better game with save states. If they released the modern versions with a toggle for infinite lives and a "restart from last room entered/town entered upon death" feature it would really be a lot more playable.

Anyone in this thread attend the midwest gaming classic? I'm getting excited for it about two months away. I'm lucky that it's basically in my backyard and getting bigger every year. I want to pick up some saturn titles but i'm not sure.

A local guy I know is selling all his titles which are original owner pristine condition saturn NA games. I bought Shining Force 3 and Albert Oddysey from him a few months ago for $300 total.

He only has about six games left and said I could pick up House of the Dead, Street Fighter Collection, and Shining the Holy Ark for $350.

I know that's an insane deal for pristine complete copies, and I won't ever get any kind of deal like that at a convention, but I'm not exactly crazy about those games. I have the japanese version of House of the Dead, Street Fighter Collection isn't even a good port, and Shining is the only one I'd want to play.

The $350 would mostly eliminate my budget for the convention but I'm not guaranteed to find anything good there anyway. I have a dream of someday having a complete NA Saturn collection but it's probably a long way off. Getting these for cheap would make financial sense but I don't like seeing games as an investment either.

Apparently this is a NYC thing, just buying food at restaurants all the time. I can't imagine living like that.
My younger cousin, who grew up and lives in NYC, when she was young, was so used to having take out/delivery/not cooking that she would assume any and all doorbells signaled a meal. lol.

We might start asking for food updates too, lol!

i had some italian tonight =)

wow! played some NES dragon spirit tonight and it's different from arcade and turbo grafx 16, it has story text. this is after i beat the first boss:

And David is *sick* at Strider. Almost got a 1 credit clear even though it was late and we were all tired from a very eventful night.
Non-Retro GAF was drinking hard, yo...

Here's some scanline porn from his play through:

The monitor looked so good in person. Very low res with almost imperceptible scanlines, but still looked sharp and vibrant. I really liked it. I would love an RGB monitor with 300-400 or so TV lines. It's a nice look and the art seems to have no jaggies on that type of screen.

just got in: retroGAF, enjoy pics of Peltz's Metal Slug run=)

^good looking retroGAFer =)

I just think the phosphorescent glow from the CRT creates the perfect mood lighting :p

Is it bad that the only thing I can think of when seeing those pictures are the hidden POWs that I forgot to rescue? There are some in the waterfalls right before the boss that I forgot to shoot down.

thanks! me and Peltz were saying if you were in NY we'd definitely call you out to chill =)

Definitely

Is there a good and reasonably priced way to get into the Metal Slug series outside of emulators? I know more than the original games were released (anthologies, compilations, etc). I would assume those would be my best bet but I'm not sure. Of the consoles/handhelds that have MS games (based on wiki), I have a DS Lite, OG Xbox, PSP, and PS1/2/3.

The PSP Anthology when played on a Vita (or maybe a PSTV?) is my favorite version of the games aside from the original carts or emulation. I heard that the Anthology on a PSP has longer loading times than a Vita (which is why I specified the platform).

I don't like the ports on PS1, PS2, Wii, PS3, Xbox, or Xbox 360 for various reasons.

I have never tried the PS4 ports or Xbox One ports (if there are any).

Great, thanks! I think I may try the PSP version. I did see some recommendations for the ps2 version searching old GAF threads.

don't play the PSP version, it has constant loads. If you want a solution in a single place, get the PS2 version. If you want good image quality, use a hex editor to force that version to 240p.

This is a good episode. Obviously Need for Speed isn't looked back on as often as the other games he's covered, but the billboarding technique of rendering a sprite on the horizon to mask a short draw distance seems really forward-thinking for the time. Wondering what other games do that. Trespasser? That was a PC game from like four years later though.

The loads on Vita hardware are almost non existent. The input lag on the PS2 version is way worse than a few small loading messages on Vita.

are you sure you're not playing the actual vita ports? the PSP version definitely still has a million times more loading than any other version

I'm playing the PSP Anthology on Vita. Yes there are loading times. But they are insanely short.

They are not deal breakers in my humble opinion. It's not like Chrono Trigger on PS1 or anything.

Just loaded it up and I'm a bit lukewarm. It's better than I remember but the menuing and weird loading -- which comes off more like constant hitching during gameplay -- still bugs me immensely. It's definitely a better alternative than it was on PSP, though. And like I said, better than I remember. Good call.

Wii VC (original Wii VC) Metal Slug ports are legit. Plus 240p support natively. It only went to MS4, tho. A shame.

I disagree. They removed the flashing when you damage bosses. That means you never know when you're doing splash damage with grenades or metal slug shells.

I paid good money for this Dynex!

Yeah, the Wii ports were fucking bullshit. PS2 ports had input lag. PS3 ports still had the hitflashes fucked up. PC port of 3 had a ton of problems.

There is just no good alternative to the originals, honestly.

man, that meetup looks awesome! glad y'all had a good time, get on down to miami sometime
yeah, we were saying if we ever go down there we need to hit you up =)

did i mention Peltz is insane at Metal Slug =P one thing i noticed was the bosses take a lot of hits to KO and Peltz used grenades and shells tactfully.

a side note: while a few GAFers were watching his playthrough, one GAFer commented a pretty girl was staring at his run through with her jaw on the floor =)

Guys, I did a let's play of Knights of the Round the other day. A favorite from my childhood. Totally as good as I'd remembered! Anyways, it got me thinking about other Capcom games of the era, since I'd just heard about Kind of Dragons, which looks rad.

Suddenly it occurs to me, I have NEVER played the Chronicles of Mystara series. I saw it was on Steam and snapped it up and it is SOOOO good. Really like the culmination of all Capcom's craft and love for Beat 'em ups in one amazing package. It may have the finest hand-drawn graphics I've seen. It's really pretty crazy. I can't believe it's taken me this long!

Over the weekend I've bought so much great shit, mostly on SEGA platforms, that I totally missed or only scraped the surface of in my youth. I'm so excited to get onto the Shinobi games, the later Golden Axe games, Alien Storm. So much good stuff. And, hell, all for around $30.

Sorry for the kind of raving lunacy, it's just such a great time to reconnect with stuff I missed out on.
