Broke the news to my barber in a rock music themed barber shop. Then my barber broke the news to everyone else there, which prompted someone to turn on a Tom Petty playlist, and a bunch of people sang along.

Fuck. RIP Tom. Thanks for the great music. You rocked Red Rocks. So glad I got to see you play on that magical night.

One of my two favorite Tom Petty songs. The other is Wake Up Time, from the same album. Wildflowers is a treasure.

When Wildflowers came out I had just graduated High School and was unsure of what I wanted to do with my life-I listened to that album so many times it marks that time period for me. It is a BEAUTIFUL album.

Winwood and Petty at the first Outsidelands was way doper than I expected. I went wanting to see acts like The Walkmen but at the end of the day came away super impressed at how good those old dudes were live.

Yeah, was pretty much my only exposure to Petty live. Primus had just finished and we wandered back over to the main stage.

I'm so damn sad about this. One of my favorite artists of all time. I think I'm just done with today. Time to unplug for a bit and spend time with my wife

I'm devastated. I first saw Petty the first time in 1981, and the last time in May. In between, at least 2 dozen times. TP & The Heartbreakers are, unquestionably inn my mind, the greatest American band in history, and Petty was clearly the gatekeeper for rock music in general, with his hidden treasures channel on SiriusXM worth the price of a subscription alone. His reverence for those who came before him was admirable, and he went out of his way to help many of them. He was a true giant, and my heart is broken. My favorite, of many...

On a somewhat tangential note, I saw Leonard Cohen live a few years ago, on his final, "Grand Tour". The female backup singers and collaborators he worked with on the tour and his last several albums was Sharon Robinson, and the Webb sisters. They're all talented, but the Webb sisters in particular have incredible voices and are amazing musicians in their own right.

I mention it because after Leonard Cohen died, they started working with Tom Petty and were backup singers on his tour. So in addition to feeling awful for Tom and his loved ones, my thoughts went to his band mates and the Webbs. They got to work with some incredible people but were probably hoping to continue doing so. :(

They were one of the reasons I extra sad that I missed Petty's final tour. I got busy and by the time I looked it up, I'd missed all the shows I could have gone to. Fuck.

The album was out before I graduated high school, but it didn't really hit me until after I did so. It was a huge part of that period from my life as well. Pretty neat.

The music on that record is the most detailed and nuanced of Tom's that I've heard. The composition from those two tracks - Crawling Back to you, and Wake Up Time - is just meticulous and beautiful. The horns at the end of Wake Up Time sneak up on me every time and underscore Tom's sagely lyrical performance in a way that moves me every time.

My aunt was in the same spot not two weeks ago, if he's already DNR after pulling the life support it's just a matter of time till the body gives up the ghost. Shit's incredibly sad to see.

Jesus what a shit day. Petty is one of my fave artists ever. His music was something I grew up with and still continue to listen to this day. I was lucky enough to see him life a handful of times and he never disappointed. RIP Tom. You will be missed. :(

Hopefully TMZ was wrong about the no brain activity news. They may just be prolonging this to try and let immediate family know. Praying for a miracle.

If he was in cardiac arrest for some time or is brain dead, whether or not he's still technically alive would be purely academic - the world has lost Tom Petty.

What the FUCK.

I was just listening to Wildflowers the other day. DEAR GOD what a shitty day.

Was thinking about seeing them during the new tour. Same with Soundgarden. I guess that won't be happening.

Seemed like such a genuine guy. With so much manufactured authenticity around, he seemed like the real deal. Hope he can pull through.

Odds are, he is on life support until his family can come say goodbye. My cousin was in this state, sadly, once they turn off life support, he likely will be gone. :(

This is a real gut punch. My dad his whole life has been an aspiring musician. He idolized The Beatles and Petty, so Petty is the soundtrack to my childhood. I can vividly remember where I was, what I was doing in certain parts of my life when a Petty song hits.

I would also highly recommend the Netflix documentary about him and the Heartbreakers. Its fantastic (the name escapes me), he's a guy that as soon as he knew what he wanted to do, wanted to make music, and did it well.

Seems to me like it's all just a technicality. Cardiac arrest and no brain activity means even if his body is still alive, Tom Petty has, for all intents and purposes, left this world.
