Risen 3: Titan Lords - Enhanced Edition announced exclusively for PS4

That's basically what you're saying. Only AAA games matter and having more choices for games is somehow not important.

None of these games are important but you've been hot and bothered in both threads on games missing X1 today ;-).

Are you announcing X1 exclusivity for Witcher 3 because if not Ps4 owners will be too and the have an option to gets this if they want too. Who argues against having more games as a bad thing but I guess warriors are gonna warrior ;-).

Do you just not realize that some of you are gloating over xbox owners not getting to play a B-Tier rpg when a much superior one will be available for us to play not that far in the future? I was just putting things in perspective for certain folk. Then again there is another thread where people are gloating about Xbox not getting a Far Cry 4 special edition game with content that is already available to them now so i guess i shouldn't be surprised.

Actually I'm in this thread because it was linked to another I was reading.

And my point isn't that Risen 3 is shit and therefore it's no loss, but more that there's been lots of doom and gloom talk that Xbox One is suddenly losing third-party support like the WiiU. People going so far as to call it a trend. Yet, the only evidence of this are a small handful of minor releases: either collector's editions or titles from smaller studios.

You're right - it's a shame that these games aren't on Xbox One and I'd be real upset at this annoucement instead of overjoyed if I didn't own a PS4 - but this ain't no Wii U situation.

Still it worries me a bit - it was the Xbox 360 that got Risen 1 exclusively last gen - why, because the publisher and developers saw it as either the easiest to port + most likely to be profitable version. It's not hard to infer from this that this European publisher at least now sees the PS4 in this position - for now at least.

Is this up anywhere for PO where I could import this to the US since the retail copy is Europe exclusive?

I just had a look around, and couldn't see any up yet. Still it's only just been announced.

It upsets me that it's not coming to Xbox One, to be honest. I much prefer playing third-party releases on that.

(I know it's considered inferior and whatnot, but don't care.)

And they'd be right. There are much more PS4's in EU than Xbox One's. Therefore, if I was a publisher of a small studio and I had limited resources available to release a game, I'd choose the console that is selling better.

I had no interest in buying the old-gen versions, and I like to see how ports perform on new-gen consoles. So I would have seriously considered purchasing an Xbox One version.

Guess I'll wait for a Steam sale and get to 1080p on my own.

That's literally what a trend is.

I've always heard so much mixed impressions of this series. Can someone give me in a few sentences what makes it good or unique? Thinking about getting it on PC.

Only finished Risen 1.

The level design is interconnected in clever ways with plenty of vertical spatial thinking required to find secrets.

Learning new skills and the various sidequests are all integrated into a microcosm of a world that actually makes sense. The settlements and people have various ideological and economic motivations and relationships. You can take sides and betray them. Like Fallout New Vegas but MORE integrated with your character's "stat" progression. Also reminded me a lot of Quest for Glory. And like them and very few other RPGs (nothing from Bioware or Bethesda for example) it had a story and characters I actually cared about.

Engaging realtime combat, more fun to me than Zelda or Ys or Elder Scrolls games though not nearly as good as Dark Souls, cool spells with surprise alternate uses

The biggest problems are poorly modeled people & clothes and a terribly rushed/empty-feeling ending.

I've played a few hours of Risen 2 and 3 but have not been able to get into them in the same way. The only thing I can say for sure I don't like about them is the combat is much jankier and the level design is episodic rather than interconnected. I still plan on playing them through eventually for the plot and cool little areas to explore, and they still seem to do a better job than most RPGs out there of making each item and skill you get feel immersive and earned and meaningful.

Two or three titles out of the entire year's catalog for both consoles does not constitute a trend, no matter how badly you want it to.

It's more than that already. Tropico 5 for one. And there are at least two more I remember seeing threads for. All smaller PC titles. The type of games 360 used to get exclusively last gen.

In other words...a trend.

It's legitimately a shame that this isn't coming out on Xbox One. It reminds me of the kind of game that, last gen, might have been 360 only. I'm lucky enough to be on the right side of the divide for most of this stuff but I certainly have sympathy for anyone who wants to play any given 3rd party game, but can't because they bought the wrong console.

Arcania The Complete Tale is this month, and The Legend of Kay Anniversary hits next month. Both smaller retail games. That's all I know for European games.

The main market for Eurojank is, unsurprisingly, Europe. More specifically, Germany, where Risen is huge. Makes perfect sense to skip the Bone. Small developers with mainly European or the Japanese target market will probably concentrate on PS4/PC(/PS3/Vita). Porting costs are too low for big publishers to do the same, though.

Don't know if I'll double-dip or not. I liked it, but it's definitely no Gothic 2.

Hm damn. Should've waited with the PC version. Bought it Day-1 for 50€ but mostly to support Piranha Byte. Only played 2 hours of it. Had no real interest to play it seriously so far. This game is way better with Controller than with shitty M+KB support. Maybe I double dip when it gets a discount on PSN or so. It's a typical Risen Game. If you like 1 and 2 than you shouldn't do any wrong with 3. It still has that Gothic nostalgia feeling. Kinda shocked that it is PS4 exclusive. The Bone loses more and more 3rd party support (in Europe) it seems. Especially for low and mid tier games who needs every cent and can't take any risks.

although I finished it twice with mouse and keyboard, i have to say it's perfectly playable with a pad, my third run was as a melee and with the 360 pad.
but the console versions were just very bad ports. i hope they do better with the ps4 version.

I like my janky European open world RPGs.

Its undeniably rough around nearly every edge, but damn if it they don't usually charm me enough to beat them.

Played through it on 360 and might go again on ps4

3 was pretty cool but the console versions were horrible performance wise.

This is the one thing that makes it OK to me with this re-release.

As a person who played over 40 hours on PS3 version, I can safely say that the game was optimized just enough that it doesn't completely lock up given how low the framerate would reach on a constant basis... I would guesstimate the fps is mostly running in range the 15-24 fps and it would dip below that more than above it.

Good to see a lifesign from them, though I don't own a PS4 so I'm kinda bummed that I have to wait quite a while to play something by them on my Xbox.

I'm going to RPC next week so I ccould post impressions if wanted.

What else is skipping it?

A lot of Japanese games, some Euro games, and a ton of indies.

Off the top of my head for third parties - Dragon Quest Heroes 1/2, Final fantasy XIV, Star Ocean 5, Persona 5, Disgaea 5, Omega Quintet, Onechanbara, Tales of Zestiria, Dragon's Dogma, Deep Down, Street Fighter V, Natural Doctrine, Arcania, Legend of Kay, Akiba's Trip, Hellblade, Toukiden.

Thanks for the thorough list

Most of those titles don't interest me, but I wish they would be multiplatform. I'm not just a one console user, though, and will likely end up playing stuff like Deep Down, Arcania and Hellblade. Those are the only ones that interest me much, outside of maybe Star Ocean 5 and Dragon's Dogma. They may be too Japanese though.

Risen 1 and Risen 3 were pretty good RPG games. well, atleast the PC versions. shame that Risen 2 basically destroyed the franchise even on PC

But still, the PS4 players can be happy that they are going to get this game on their system

Have you played Gothic 1-3? Risen 1 is pretty much just like the Gothic games. Piranha Bytes recycled the excellent Gothic world/exploration/gameplay design formula from 2000 (Gothic) to 2009 (Risen). It changed for the worse, much worse infact, with Risen 2. I've read that Risen 3 even takes a few more steps into that same lame direction by having invisible walls(!), which is one of the reasons I've still not wanted to play it.

I loved Risen 3, had a wonderful time with it. One of my favourite games of that year.

I also didn't know Reality Pump has gone bankrupt, genuinely saddened by that :( I love Two Worlds 2 and the DLC for it was especially superb. Shame they fucked things up with the release of Ravens Cry.

Well since "nothing major" works for you I thought it was pretty apt.

Of course you did. :)

Anyway we're pretty far off topic here, but my point is smaller studios with limited resources opting to publish only for PS4 right now is inevitable. I wouldn't go so far as to say Xbox One is losing third-party support in general though, and it's hardly a trend.

There's still plenty of multiplats in the pipeline. Once those start getting cancelled and major publishers start backing out, then it's time to worry.

So, EA, Acti, and Ubi are all Bone owners really want/need?

And if they're the only ones certain to continue support, that doesn't constitute a "general" lack of 3rd-party support? What if EA decide to launch a new IP on PS4? Would that also not count?

I guess I'm trying to figure out where you're drawing the line here. Everything is peachy until Madden gets cancelled? Would FIFA count, or would that just be, "Duh, EU hates MS," or maybe a bribe from Sony?

Well, since multiple people are claiming XO has become the new Wii U, and that's really how this whole argument started in the FC4 Complete Edition thread, I guess I'd draw the line around the same place: when the Wii U really started losing its third-party support and developers started dropping like flies.

We're not even close to being there yet.

I think you're being a little sensitive. /comfort

Out of curiosity, what did it look like when third parties first started straying from the Wii U? When did that start happening? Were WU fans claiming these isolated incidents are meaningless? How do you feel the Bone's current situation differs from what turned out to be "the beginning of the end" for WU?

I'm pretty sure it started getting serious when games like Crysis 3, Battlefield 4, and Metro were cancelled.

I feel XO's situation differs because, despite how it's doing outside the US, it's still doing relatively well in the US.

No, I'm asking what it was like before that. Looking back, what were the first signs that the Serious was coming? I don't really follow Nintendo, so honest question here, to any comers.

I am not sure what the first signs were. I'm not the best person to ask as I've always treated Wii and Wii U as Nintendo consoles and I usually only buy Nintendo games for them. As I remember, the Wii U was never really a strong contender out of the gate as far as third-party games go. I kept reading bits and pieces around the web that developers felt the machine was underpowered and not suitable for porting games to. Also I'm sure the lack of first-party games when it first came out didn't do much to drive sales. It didn't seem to start coming into his own until a couple years after it hit the market, but by then it felt like it was too late for it to be a real contender.

Have you seen my Ubipie?

Yes, we've all seen your pie. Ubisoft is also just one company. (Not to mention, one who tends to make mediocre games in general, if the threads here are any indication.)

I remember hearing the power concerns, but I didn't know if it was the devs or the fans.

I'm not sure what you're saying here. You wouldn't care if Ubi dropped support for the Bone? Their games suck so they don't qualify as a "major publisher"? Bone owners are obviously playing Forza, CoD, and BF instead of buying Ubi games? Do you have some reason to believe their sales aren't typical of other Western publishers?

Regarding the stronghold of America itself, remember that MS made a lot of hay last Christmas by being significantly cheaper than PS4. Despite that gain, PS4 is still ahead. Before that, PS4 was besting Bone every month by 1.5x to 2x. Now that Christmas has passed, PS4 is back to 1.5x even though some of the Christmas discounts have hung around. If Sony go to $299, I don't really see how MS can compete with that. Last year it was a $400 PS4 against a $330 Bone with two games. If Sony go to $300, do you really think MS will respond with something in the $200+GAMEZ range? $230 with a free copy of H5, MCC, and a $50 gift card? Sony kinda hold the reins here.

Just because they're second place doesn't mean they're going to start losing support and disappear. It just means they'll be second place. Likely they'll miss out on a handful of games by smaller publishers who will concentrate on Sony's console because they'll get more sales, but I can't see it going any further than that.

I'll be genuinely surprised if it does.

It's better than Risen 2, worse than Risen 1 and not even close to Gothic 1/2/3.

Risen 2 is a way better game than Gothic 3 though (which I played through recently). I'm a big Piranha Bytes fan, but even with the community patches that game is a mess.

G3 was kind of unfocused I think, a problem I'm glad they addressed in Risen 2.
The open world in R2 also is probably the best world I saw since G2+addon

G3 is a mess, but I stil liked it a lot. you just had so much freedom, too much actually, the game really was an unorganized mess witthout any kind of bigger picture.

I also think that risen 2 is an enjoyable RPG, although it's clearly piranha bytes worst game for me. it's simply the game where their philosophies were applied the least.

Varant (which was what, 50% of the total map?) was just a whole lot of nothing. Nordmar was pretty awful as well, it just felt unfinished. I think if they'd cut those two areas and put more focus on the rest, it could have been pretty good.

I'm one of the few who liked Risen 2 too. The atmosphere and music was what it saved it for me. And the silly dialoges are funny if you don't take the game too serious. I had always the feeling that the game knew it is just a game and making fun of it.

I've enjoyed all of the Risen games and have plenty of hours spread across them. Hell, i'll be all over Raven's Cry this weekend so i'm not afraid of a bit of eurojank if it has a piratey theme :)

Yeah, looking back they're not perfect but i've had fun with them.
