THe sad thing is, Fabio Laguna did two fill-in issues of Wolverine where he stole every single panel and page layout from previous issues of X-Men and Wildcats Jim Lee did.
I have those issues. Sad times indeed. :(

Fabio Laguna

EDIT: WARNING! Some of the artwork on that page that is above the disclaimer area at the bottom also contains nudity. In other words, the pirate girl artwork is NSFW. Click at your own risk.

His work's come a long way it seems.

I'll admit to some swiping. When I was a little kid, I used to do it ALL the time, out of those "How to Draw _______" books for children and coloring books. And in high school, when I was struggling to learn the basics of drawn anatomy, I still traced or copied poses quite a bit. IIRC, my favorite targets at the time were Jim Lee, Marc Silvestri, and J. Scott Campbell. Of course, I wasn't putting together homemade comics or anything; just sketches and pictures for friends. And I sure as hell wasn't a PROFESSIONAL ARTIST MAKING A LIVING OFF COPYING OTHERS' WORKS like Liefeld or Mr. Laguna there.

Nowadays, I just start drawing lines and see what comes out. :lol

for the record, it looks like Liefeld is doing Teen Titans because it's bringing back Hawk and Dove, which is the book (limited series) that gave him his start.

Anyway, I've defended Liefeld before.. his style is what it is. Most seem not to like it. It's never bothered me, and some of his scenes are composed nicely (even if probably stolen). The story being told is, to me, more important than the author or the methods he/they use to create the story.. in this case Liefeld's art is ok IMHO and Simone writing the story is such a huge draw it will take more than Rob to scare me away from the book.

Yeah, that kinda did moderate it for me. That, and it's only for two issues.

Thing was, Rob was actually a better artist on Hawk and Dove than he became later, when he got popular.

They're bringing back Hawk and Dove?

.... can't say I saw that coming.

they've been back for a few issues already. but the thing is that over in JSA the original dove is lookiong for hawk as well. so that's a bit confusing. not to mention the fact that geoff johns writes both books.

Dove's been back for a bit, in JSA of all places. The new Hawk just showed up (for the first time, as far as I know) in a recent issue of Teen Titans.

Dove is Dawn Granger again, and I don't know who the new female Hawk is.

I'm not a huge comic fan, but I often see artwork that I really like coming out of them. The Street Fighter comic is a good example.

But this looks looks really bad to me. Something about all of the characters just seems off... especially the scene with the dark chick kicking robin... holy crap :lol

Dove is still Dawn Granger and the new Hawk is her long lost sister Holly who grew up in the UK while Dawn grew up on the east coast of the U.S. Holly/Hawk first appeared a few issues back in Teen Titans as part of the Dr. Light arc.

He even made a lobo rip off...geezus h christ..i really didnt like any of his work before, especially with mark silvestri, jim lee, val semeks, and Portacio out there. But man he really does take everyones poses.

I kinda liked Bloodwulf (the Lobo ripoff), actually.

Anyway, the same book (Darker Image #1) had a Sin City rip off by Jim Lee (Deathblow, I think). Stylisticly, anyway.

Deathblow was actually a pretty good comic way back when, before they started doing all that Team7 crap. Jim Lee's inherent style adapted surprisingly well to the high contrast approach of Miller. And the whole "black ops killer called upon by the Catholic Church to prevent Armageddon" thing really worked for me, I guess.

Plus, I think it was the mainstream debut of Tim Sale. Or at the very least, his first brush with popular fame.

Definitely Rob's best cover:

That cover reminds me of a funny exchange from Beavis and Butthead...

Beavis: Ahhhh! Her backs bent out of shape!

Butthead: Dammit, Beavis. Don't you know that when a chicks' back is bent like that it means she's hot?!

Beavis: I dunno Butthead. I think she's injured.

While I dont' exaclty consider myself a grade A or even grade C artist I can tell bad art when I see it and this is definetly bad art. Leifelds artwork is pretty well the reason why I hated american comic books throughout the '90's. The mans art looks more like a bunch of half assed sketches that were shipped off and inked, but even the worlds best inker couldnt' save it.

how can liefelds work overshadow Lee, and McFarlane though, and why does everybody keep saying he was this big superstar like McFarlane wasnt HA. I know alot of people liked X-FOrce and Cable and stuff and it was pretty popular...but , maybe i was a bit outta the loop, but it seemed like X-Men returning (with the 4 bad ass variant covers) and Mc Farlanes Spawn/Spiderman work was far more popular.

Her arm looks like a muscle-y pony tail in the first frame.. Considering the angle of her tits, her arm should be for the most part not visible. This guy's scary.

This hurts my head.

This is not Liefeld. It's from NewMen and was drawn by Jeff Matsuda when he was just starting out. Jeff started out as a Rob clone at Rob's studio but quickly adapted his own style and improved greatly. Altho his run on X-Factor was met with some resistance it doesnt matter that he was frequently given bad inkers/colorists (although Jeff's work only really looked best when inked by Jon Sibal or Art Thiebert and colored by Chris Lichtner from Liquid!). Anyways altho Jeff started out a little shaky he has now become somewhat of an important guy working in the TV animation realm. You can find details here.

Good Lord, how'd this guy actually get a job?!

Really young kid (16 right?), right place, right time. Comics were kinda hot at that time, so the gimmick of a young kid coming in a doing stuff for one of the big comapanies was an exciting prospect.

Problem was, someone forgot to tell Marvel that hs "art" is shit.

Hell, lately there's some awful artists on books lately (the guy who draws the New Invaders and anything by John Romita Jr. lately...SQUARE JAWS FOR EVERYONE!), so it astound me that people get through the door....

What's worse is that I wasn't hired by Marvel back in the early 90's, but he was. OMG! Liefield>me... the shame :(

I know the feeling.... I had a couple indy projects that I was working on that fell through. But I never pursued the Marvel route as I felt my work wasn't good enough for Marvel (although others have told me otherwise).

At one point Image had some interest in the work a partner and myself were doing. Even got to the point of going to their offices in Cali. That fell through too..... My inks were strong, as well as my fill in work (I took a backseat for this project), but the pencils by my partner were loose and without and sense of flow or consistancy.

Me being the honorable guy I am I wouldn't have done the book (Grifter one shot, sign of the times!) without him doing pencils and me the fill in an inking), and him likewise.

someday I'll get back into art as a whole, but as I get older I don't find the motivation to do it.

Crappy artist for a crappy comic book.

I don't see the problem.

You know what's worse than a lame sidekick?

A whole team of them! :lol

This thread is for the purpose of bashing Rob. There's no need to drag The Teen Titans into this.

The current Titans series with Johns writing & McKone drawing (soon to be replaced by that guy drawing Rann Thangarian War) rocks. Simone and Liefeld are only doing a fill-in arc.

Of course, everything from the last 15 years that isn't Alex Ross, Peter David Hulk or Savage Dragon sucks in TToB's book, so there's no point arguing.

TToB is an alex ross cock sucker? -1 TToB

What?! What?! What?!

Fuck the Peter David Hulk too.

Jesus shit that was awful.

I tried re-reading that crap before the Hulk movie came out, and I got to the "socially relevant" AIDS issue where one of Rick Jones's friends a supporting black character had TEH AIDS from TEH GAY.

Oh christ - it's painful attempting to read that shit. It's like watching a First Grader giving a report on why their dad is so great. Shut the fuck up. Juvenile power fantasies. You're not socially relevant. Get over it. :X

In summary: Peter David sucks and Dale Keown isn't as good as I remember him being. :p

Threads like this make me feel like Gunny Highway from Heartbreak Ridge. :lol

I've drank more beer, pissed more blood, and banged more quiff than all you numb-nuts put together

I love comics. Doesn't mean I have to put up with Marvel and DC's bullshit once I've grown out of it. Problem is fandom doesn't want to grow up.

I don't know jack about comics...

And you're a better man for it. :)

Nothing more pathetic than a guy who worships a gameboy mascot game character talking about how hes outgrown something supposedly more childish.

Heh. I must've remembered wrong then. I vaguely recall a #ga conversation last year where you said you liked the Peter David run. I do remember you ranting about how great Alex Ross is, though.
