Smells faintly of rancid stilton.
A 32-year-old Fort Collins man, who was shot in the head last Friday afternoon while attempting to rob a downtown Windsor liquor store with a garden hose nozzle, died Tuesday.
Windsor police confirmed late Tuesday that Donald Wies died at Hospice and Pallitive Care of Northern Colorado. Wies, who had been hospitalized at North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley since he was shot, was transferred to the hospice center on Monday.

Windsor Police Chief John Michaels said Tuesday that Wies died "around noon." Michaels said an autopsy will be performed Wednesday. When the autopsy is completed, Michaels said he will turn over all of his investigation reports to the Weld County District Attorney's Office for review.

Michaels said he doesn't expect any charges to be filed since the robber died and the liquor store owner, Ron Trauernicht, was acting in self defense.

The chief said the investigation is now centering on a motive. It has been reported that Wies had money problems and was being sued by several businesses. The chief, however, refused to comment on any motive until he has talked with Wies' estranged wife, Samantha. She lives in Fort Collins at an undisclosed address but Michaels, who had her cell phone number, was unable to reach her on Tuesday.

Michaels did say his officers have executed search warrants at Douglas Wies' apartment in Fort Collins, 2343 Kodiak Road, and on his car. Michaels said he couldn't disclose what was found in the apartment or car until he talks to Samantha Wies.

The unusual shooting began late Friday when Wies entered Corner Liquors, 117 6th Street. Wies, wearing a cloth mask and holding a garden hose nozzle wrapped in cloth to appear like a weapon, announced that he had a gun and demanded money from the store's owner, Ron Trauernicht.

About the same time, two customers walked in behind Wies. The first one, Fred Rudd, stayed. The second, upon seeing the robbery, ran outside and made a 911 call to the police.

Wies then forced Ron Trauernicht, his wife, Norma Trauernicht, and Rudd into the store's walk-in cooler. As Ron Trauernicht lingered, Norman Trauernicht and Rudd exited the building at the other end of the cooler.

Rudd, who had a cell phone, immediately called the police. Norma Trauernicht then turned to go back inside the store.

"I told her to come with me," Rudd said. "She said she couldn't."

Upon returning into the liquor store, Norma Trauernicht came up behind Wies who was standing fairly close to her husband.

The robber then began panning his gun between the Trauernichts. When Wies forced Norma Trauernicht down, Ron Trauernicht grabbed a pistol from underneath the counter.

Facing each other at close range with guns drawn, Trauernicht fired one shot. Michaels said the bullet from Trauernicht's gun struck the inside of the garden hose nozzle, exited the top of the nozzle and struck Wies in the top of the forehead.

Michaels later said that the cloth used to make the mask and to wrap around the garden hose nozzle were from a long-sleeve T-shirt Wies had cut up before the robbery attempt.

The shooting death was the first in Windsor since Sept. 9, 2000 when Travis Phillips was shot to death by his father, Ron Phillips, following a drunken argument.
