I'm still here though. So, uhm... yays? If only you weren't all Microsoft-loving infidels with your decadent online multiplayer lifestyles.

I just bought a PS3 after having been without RB since March, when I sold my 360 for some much needed cash. It's good to have RB back, and I just hit the store for the first time - and found that there were 2 free songs: Still Alive and something from the Rocker.

Pretty sweet - hopefully a 3rd today with Colbert.

I've missed my fake plastic band so much.

Joke post?

Sorry to sound condescending, but your face isn't all too familiar anyway.

I've pretty much only posted in here since I joined (post history), but I'm a junior so inevitably this is true.

Also, I can't find Colbert song, (I'm on 360). Maybe they took it down?

It's not under the 'new songs', search by the first letter in RB (Charlene).

I went into the marketplace on the dashboard and it has the little circle with a line through it so apparently its only currently available for Live Gold members.

But it doesnt show up at all in the Rock Band store.

am i missing something

i cant find the license to export songs on the ps store, RB says i need to buy that trought he ps store before exporting, WHERE DO I BUY IT!!!!!! :(

so now that the update has hit PS3, has anyone been able to locate the export key in the store??
In the 360 version, it's not in the store. You go to Options -> Export. Then it prompts you to buy a license. Then it exports.

WTF? I'm continually amazed at how unintuitive things are on PS3.

The Colbert song is fun to play, but placing it at tier 3 is so very, very wrong. It is now the new easiest song in the entire game. Or, at least, it really feels that way. Instant FC gold star. Not many people have played it yet on PS3 or score just haven't updated yet because my 29k would put me at the top of the 8 person list.

Has anyone tried or heard anything about the Mad Catz Bass controller? I need a second guitar and I don't really care about wireless. I thought about waiting for GH:WT but I kinda want it for Sunday.

So basically it's a nice parting gift to 360 RB1 players who never managed to FC/GS a song, allowing them to move onto RB2 without the clawing sadness of not having enough achievements?

It's basically impossible to mess up on They Say on guitar.

to be fair, it will probably work the same way as 360 once the key is available for d/l. Just surprises me a bit that they'd go live with this patch when the key isn't even available. I was planning on just exporting, then selling of RB1 to give myself a bit of a sabbatical before the RB2 madness.

The whammy bar is apparently some sort of knob because they're going a bit too far to keep it looking authentic. I also think that $70 is a bit pricey, but then again so is $30 for the mic stand.

At the same time the ability to finally play bass fingerstyle....

So, in my efforts in finding the new drums today, I managed to stumble into my local Gamestop who ended up not only having them, but the new Fender Precision Bass as well. I have been waiting a long time to get my hands on it, so I ended up dropping $170 for the both of them. Not being a drummer, I can't really comment much on the drums outside of stuff that was immediately obvious (they sound as quiet as having drum silencers on the old kit, they feel a LOT sturdier, more sensitive to hits), but the bass.

Oh.

My.

God.

With the exception of the upcoming GH:WT guitar, I have a lot of experience with many of the guitars they've put out and I think that I can say that the P-Bass is probably the best one of all. Getting down to basics first, it's a very solid build; there's enough weight to it to feel good while not being heavy at all. The frest are also well-made; they're a great mix of Rock Band's general layout (which I've always adored) with the feel of the Les Paul frets, giving you a nice, quiet time while you go up and down. The strumbar might be the real revelation, though; much has been made of the split nature of it, but just playing on one should convince you; it has a very soft click when you go up and down that while it isn't nearly as quiet as the stock Fender, it's still very quiet and easily trounces the others in that department. It has the same snap as the Les Paul, but has the same mobility as the Fender, giving you a real "best of both worlds" design that's hard to argue with. Most important for bassists, though, is the addition of the thumb rest that lies about inch above the strumbar. It gives your thumb something to hold onto while you upstrum, making it not just more authentic but that much more pleasing to play on. The split strum works like you imagine it would. For upstrummers like me, it really adds so much to the game.

The downfalls are due to them trying to replicate an actual bass as much as they did, which put many of the buttons on knobs. It's a bit confusing to "turn" Start to pause the game as it's nothing you've ever had to do before, but I can see myself getting used to it. Perhaps the most controversial decision was nixing the whammy completely, putting it on a knob that lies a few inches down from the strumbar. It makes it more authentic, but turning a knob like mad just isn't the same as wailing on the whammy bar.

I can forgive those issues since the positives outweigh them by magnitudes. If you want further proof as to how great the P-Bass is, all you need to know is that you can actually twist the tuning heads to your heart's desire. I am in love with this fake instrument, and you should be, too.

I am certainly interested in this fake bass. I'm not sure how I'll be able to adjust to it's strum bar split though.

Any chance you can take a picture of the strum bar?

It's definitely a weird feeling at first, but I'm starting to get the hang of it. There's definitely enough room on each of the strums to play it like you normally would, but it really, really, really does add that much more to the experience.

EDIT: I sadly do not have access to a camera, though I'll see if I can figure something out.

I think you've convinced me. If I didn't need a second guitar already then maybe the whammy thing would be enough to turn me off, but I'm gonna go take the plunge.

I don't think I could get used to the strum knob. I mean, having to move my hand from the strum to whammy? Unthinkable!

The Frontman, I should state, is absolutely terrible. The thing doesn't have a fucking off switch so it consumes batteries with the vigor of an underage Thai prostitute. I'm replacing the damn batteries every few days. Even with rechargables it gets very annoying. My GH2 PS2 wireless took months to run down. The buttons are tiny, the strum bar feels oddly placed, the start button is placed to cause maximum accidental presses, it has trouble staying connected wirelessly. Even the tiny little cord on the USB dongle is too annoyingly short to be placed anywhere but immediately in front of the PS3 where, of course, there is no space. Just about everything that can be done wrong is.

Anybody who buys V1 of Harmonix hardware is kinda looking for trouble after last year.

You would think harmonix would have learnt too... this is v3 or 4 isnt it? Is not like the pads are that different

TheGreatDave said:
Well, the pads are velocity sensitive now, so I guess they have to be new hardware.

Doesn't mean the pads are different, just the controller brain if they're still using piezo discs, which they almost certainly are.

TheGreatDave said:
I'm out of my depth.

Basically, the old pads could have supported it, just not the controller part.
The original pads were using the same basic technology (this http://www.ufodrums.com/27mmpiezodisc.htm but way smaller) as some great drums, just in a really half-assed way.

EDIT: After reading that Scorehero thread...:lol
Oh, Harmonix... You fail at designing hardware. Why are you still trying at this point?

So two random observations from today's daily session of playing RB1 a lot before 2 comes out: Won't Get Fooled Again is still by far the best song on drums. And rubber bands make the drum silencer things I bought at Best Buy not suck.
