Rocky IV: Rocky vs. Drago | The Ultimate Director’s Cut | Official Trailer

For those who don't mind spoilers, someone posted the Training Montage (Both parts) from the Director's Cut:

I miss the old explosive punch sound effects and they cut that great shot of Rocky crumpling the Drago photo. Luckily the music is still intact. Changing that would have been a deal breaker.

Anyone watch this yet?

Yeah saw the theatrical premiere.

I liked it though I still prefer the original theatrical version overall. For me it was a very interesting companion piece to the original.

The core movie is still very much the Rocky 4 we all know and love though large amounts of it are cut differently and there's an attempt to bring in more depth to the characters (Well, some of them). Some of the changes are weird(The entire new intro, imo) while some are pretty neat. All the montages are still there with some parts of them cut differently, especially for the fight (All the fights are cut fairly differently). Movie tries to eliminate some of the cheese or ill-fitting jokes but still has the same sense of humour overall. As expected Brigitte Nielson got nuked and is mainly just eye candy though that led to more focus on Michael Pataki's character which was cool. Was hoping Drago would get more screen or character but I guess there wasn't enough to work with. Ultimately had a lot of fun and enjoyed it.

Edit: Forgot to mention, I really didn't like the new aspect ratio. A lot of the movie has a really cropped look to it now.

I thought i read this was 40mins longer, but the film is only 2mins longer. I guess i read it wrong and its 40mins new/different footage replacing old footage.

A bit let down to be honest, but i will 100% be checking it out.

I saw it last night. Its def worth a watch, and some of the new scenes are quite interesting.
Sly basically stripped the 80's vibe from the film though (apart from the music), and it almost has a feel of a documentary at times. Some of the editing is a little wierd too, but not surprising after seeing how it was editd (just Sly, and another guy in a room with a camera crew following them lol). Sly changed the punch sound effects too and while not bad, the punches dont have the booming impact of the orig cut.

Def prefer the orig cut, but its worth a watch.

I watched it on demand today. It was good because Rocky 4 is good but I do not think it is as fun as the original cut. The kids are cut out entirely.
It isn’t bad just different.

I like it more than the original cut, especially the recut fights. The recut Apollo fight here is so much better. In the original Apollo is just a punching bag. Here he tries to fight back more.

The extras with Stallone are great. He says if he had to do it over again he wouldn't have killed Apollo but instead put him in a wheelchair and he would've taken on the Mickey role. But then the entire trajectory of the other movies would've been different and Creed would probably not happen at all.

I think in general Stallone's 2nd cuts of movies tend to be better. John Rambo was similar. The original cut always seems to be him being more impulsive and not thinking as much (he says as much about the original Rocky IV in this, he was being impulsive because he thought the audience had no patience at the time), but then after he thinks things through he does a director's cut that's not bad but just different.

If I were to sit down to watch Rocky IV going forward, it's probably this version.

Did you notice the music being very muted in this version like James Rolfe pointed out?

In the Rocky movies I have noticed the theatrical release has a much louder music mix than a home release. Creed is staggering at how different the music is between the theater and the home audio.

I really enjoyed this cut. I love Rocky 4 but it always felt like a different film to the others in the series (maybe the fact it didn't have a score by Bill Conti helped that) yet this version of the film feels MUCH more like a true Rocky film, and feels completely in line with the previous 3 films.
The music isn't as pronounced in this new directors cut. It feels FAR less 80's as a result of that although we still get those great 80's tunes in the film.
I still love the original Rocky 4 but this seems a much more serious movie now. I liked it a lot.

It's Rocky IV reimagined by a post-Rocky Balboa Stallone. And you're right it feels a lot more like the first three than the original cut did. Stallone says in the extras how he doesn't see them as sports movies but dramas.

I always felt like even though I did love Rocky 4, watching it as an adult I noticed it was really different in tone to the original 3. This brings it right in line with the previous 3 films far more and I feel it's better for it.

Was the last Rocky Movie any good? Balboa, I think it was called? I skipped it because Rocky 5 was so terrible and I didn't think another movie 20 years later would be any better.

Yeah definitely give it a watch. It's a solid drama and (at the time) wrapped up the series quite nicely after Rocky 5 soured things. It is a little on the cheap side due to the studios not even wanting to make it but one might argue that adds to it's "back to basics" approach.

Best Rocky movie besides the first two, IMO. I actually enjoyed each of the original five films less than the previous one, but Balboa was a really great and thoughtful film.

It also has this awesome scene that I think sums up the whole series beautifully:
