I thought it was okay. Definitely reminded me of Godzilla in that there was some beautiful imagery and good action but all the stuff with humans talking with each other was fairly plodding and dull. The first half is way too exposition heavy and little of it is done in a very interesting way. I don't think Edwards is a very good actor's director, which is a shame for a film with so much dialogue. Also the main actress was pretty flat, not sure if it's the script, if she's done great stuff in other movies or if her blandness was done in purpose to make her a better self-insert character. Overall scenes of characters talking to each other were stilted in a way those in TFA were fluid and engaging, and I dont think it's just because of the darker tone.

CGI old actors are so fucking creepy. The uncanny valley is even worse now that they're so close.

I've just seen it and i agree with all of these. Personally i think TFA is a better experience, but then again i'm one those people who don't particularly like Godzilla (pls don't hate me guys it's my first post in neogaf)

That all sure sounds like the Gareth Edwards I know from Godzilla.

Dw, duckroll, you have my sword.

I vastly prefer Shin over 2014, and this is despite the fact that the exposition dumps got a little overboard sometimes.

Shin and 2014 are almost two entirely separate genres, comparing them is like comparing A New Hope to Toy Story.

As much as I liked the money shot in 2014, Shin's put it to shame, and Shin was also a social commentary and a dark comedy that I still spend time thinking about. 2014 came and went like Pacific Rim.

So anyway bringing this back to Star Wars, it sounds like this might be the best of the Star Wars spinoffs, as much as I loved the Ewok movies as a kid.

Is the bacta tank scene disappointing in the movie?
I remeber a lot of talk when the trailer came out and haven't seen anyone talk about it in the movie

Gary Whitta is gonna be on the GameOverGreggy (Kinda Funny) podcast next week, presumably to discuss the film and what was kept of his for the story. Might get some answers there.

That's a pretty cool follow up considering how secretive he had to be when he was first on there. Will tune in for sure.

Oh and the monstrously-bad CG character totally was
Tarkin
, going by the Indiewire review.

Bumping this post because I think
they actually exagerate. Yes, the character dips into the uncanny valley from time to time, but as often it's actually incredibly lifelike too. It might be the best CGI effect of the film (and the worst in those moments it doesnt really hold up. After the first scene, you get used to it too, and it doesnt pull you out anymore. I also overheard talk exiting the theater of people not realising he was CGI, and only knowing because their partner noticed or knew Peter Kushing was deceased.

Ethicaly is a slippery slope though

and end scene spoilers:

They do the same with Leia, and there it isn't uncanny at all imo. Incredible effects work.

Huh, I'm a little surprised the droid worked out in the end. Elements of that character have popped up all over the expanded fiction for years, and I never felt like it fit that well with Star Wars.

Yes please. It's over 24 hours til I see it and I would hate to be spoiled. Maybe just post that you have a question and ask if there's someone you can PM, or just go in the spoiler thread?

I liked Rogue One a lot more than The Force Awakens.

It's a war movie set in Star Wars universe with amazing attention to detail and just beautiful imagery. It's like they gave Expanded Universe attention and money and made it turn good.

It's in top 3 SW movies for me with Empire and RotJ.

Is this going to be one of those things where people who absolutely love Star Wars like the movie significantly more than casual fans do? Basically, the opposite of my perceived reaction to The Force Awakens?

I went to see it with a group and older people who were around for the original trilogy, played video games, board games, etc loved it. The prequel fans were 'meh'.

Sounds like they went over the top making a movie for the real fans and the hipsters get all indignant that they weren't pandered to.

Like Batman vs Superman.

It doesn't sound like that at all.

Doesn't play like that either.

But that's certainly a narrative I'm sure we'll see pushed in the coming weeks.

It's 3 am so I'll be brief, but I liked it a lot. Everyone I was with reckon it was better than force awakens, but they're pretty negative on TFA in general whereas I'm not, so I'm not entirely sure.

One thing I will say though is a reckon it does just the right amount of references to previous films, it doesn't bog itself down with tons.

K2 and blind guy are the standout characters for mine.

I think I'll properly digest it after some sleep, but overall, it's good. Comfortably the best prequel at least, but how could it not be?

Very average movie. Not bad at all, just very, very average.

There was no climax really, the whole thing felt just like one drawn out scene over two hours. It felt like a TV movie to me.

It wasn't the prequels bad or anything but just very flat.

And the CG characters, why oh why. Unless you are going to make them flawless and indistinguishable, just use a similar looking actor.

On the CG, it made it obvious how rushed Disney were to get this out. The ships and walkers were far from perfect and imo, didn't even match the CG from the prequel movies (or any recent CG blockbusters).

A few cringeworthy bits as expected. Any time the word 'force' was used just seemed, excuse the pun, forced. Donnie Yen's chanting was almost comical.

The only surprising scene and somewhat climatic action was Vader at the end, but even then it almost seemed out of place and a bit like a fan film tribute.

A real shame overall because some of the characters had the potential to be some of the best in the whole franchise (and the acting to go with it) but in such a rushed story with cuts and edits every few minutes, the characters weren't built to really mean much to the viewers.

I don't know what I was expecting and I am definitely not hating for the sake of hating, I quite enjoyed the movie and as I say, definitely didn't dislike it, but it was indeed an average film. Force Awakens was better in just about every way.

Just got back from seeing it. Really really enjoyed it.
The first 30-40 minutes had me a little worried as it just wasn't clicking for me and felt a tad disjointed but it improved quite a bit after the messy start and the final hour of the film pretty much gave me everything I wanted from Rogue One.
