I really liked this movie,
a lot of world and story building at the start and then straight to action. The ending was really lovely, fit well and made so much sense.

This was gunna be my next question. How's the dialogue? Any cringe?

I have no idea how to define cringe but there are no "nooos".
There is something that might be regarded as goofy BUT it works well in the context. Of course, this generally applies to scifi dialogue...

I don't know if it NEEDED to be told, but necessity or not, it's the fourth best film in the series, and the gap between it and the next film down is pretty big.

I know you prefer RotS to RotJ, so I'm guessing your ranking looks something like this:

ESB
ANH
TFA
RO
RotS
RotJ

...which would surprise me, because I didn't realise you held TFA and RotJ in such high and low regard respectively.

Thanks. Which movies make your Top 3?

Empire, Star Wars, Force Awakens. Then this. And this is really close to TFA.

Also, almost all the dialog that you heard in the trailers isn't present at all in the movie. If like, half the visuals in the marketing never made it to the final cut, It's closer to like, 80% of the dialog in the marketing isn't here at all.

I skipped past everything they released after the first trailer but damn that seems kind of silly now if this is true.

It very much plays as if this was the only version of the story there ever was, even though we all know by now that's not the case. It's probably the best effect, honestly. There's convincing you that a ship is real, a creature is tangible, this landscape exists—and then there's convincing you this film is a cohesive whole that locks together tightly even when we know they had to go to work on it to get it in shape.

So very much like the Original Star Wars. That's good to hear.

T-minus 2 hours and counting and those 2 hours are going to feel long.

Came back from the theater 30 min ago, at first, I didn't like how the movie begins, it was too cliché and badly acted, it was really boring too and then it escalated quickly and then the movie started to be incredible. The last hour of the movie is just fantastic and the space battle is the biggest and the best of all the saga hands down, Vador is legendary and the fan-service is done great, better than it was in episode 7.

Honestly, the movie is better than SW7, it's more mature, it take more risk, have a great diversity in the cast and situation and what is the most important to me, it feels like the OT, a great movie, love it, I'll give it a 8.5 or 9 out of ten, I need to rewatch it to decide if the score will go up or down but go see it, it's wonderful.

Bobby, let me ask you this, and I apologize in advance if it's been asked already...

...did this story need to be told? Is this movie-verse richer for it?

There was a lot of discussion around this question when all these side movies were announced. For the first time in my life, I have zero interest in seeing a Star Wars movie (fuck, I didn't even know it was being released tonight!) so I'm trying to get another angle on it to see if I can drum up any excitement.

It didn't need to be told, but it's a story that long time fans have wanted.

My review won't drop until the end of the week, but my initial Twitter impression still stands.

"This is the StarWars prequel I've been waiting for since I was 10 years old."

Rogue One slots in nicely with the OT. I liked TFA, but I liked RO more.

Real tempting to click on the spoiler thread just to see what some of the conversation is like in there.

But I'm definitely staying away till tomorrow night.

Hey Bobby, good to see you back here.

Empire, Star Wars, Force Awakens. Then this. And this is really close to TFA.

More importantly, where does Rogue One rank among the SW spinoff films? Meaning the Holiday Special, Caravan of Courage, Ewoks: The Battle for Endor, and The Clone Wars.

After 32 years is Caravan of Courage no longer the best SW spinoff movie?

its fake 3D don't bother spending the extra money

It's a misconception only native 3D can be good. As long as the movie is shot with 3D in mind it can be great (and I would argue some that weren't can be good too). You can't spot the difference between native and conversion.

Rogue Ones 3D isn't essential. First half I actually regretted going in 3D (though I am a fan), but then came that third act...

it's at the top, my current ranking of the movies is :

Empire Strike Back > ROTJ > Rogue One= A New Hope > TFA > .... All > 3, 1, 2.

My initial reaction was that it felt like a very good adaptation of a Dark Horse Comic that doesn't exist.

4 Best?

Rank please.

Is not like TFA right?

Full of cliche pandering trash is it?

Rogue one feels like the prequel you always wanted but at the same time not entirely Star Wars movie while absolutely being a Star Wars movie.

I think I enjoyed it more than Force Awakens, although TFA is perhaps the better crafted movie as a whole. Say what you will about the parallel story telling in TFA, it doesn't really suffer from any technical movie-making niggles.

Rogue One has the stronger emotional resonance, at least for now. It's a bit unfair because TFA isn't it's own thing as in a single story. It is part of a trilogy so in that vein it's unfinished.

I have no idea, but I am hopeful!

I'm trying to decide whether to watch it tonight or after I get home from my showing tomorrow.

If you haven't seen Rogue One yet, maybe watch new hope one last time to see it in the light that you always have but will never see again after knowing the events that lead up to there.

... and the space battle is the biggest and the best of all the saga hands down...

You can spoiler tag the answer to this, but I have to know: Is it just fighters, or is it all out fleet vs. fleet of capital ships with clever strategies? I love me some capital ship fights and space battle tactics.

Was going to go next week, found out I can in fact go tomorrow night, and lo and behold the 10:15pm IMAX showing isn't sold out yet. Everything else is though. They usually give out freebies at the theater here so hoping for at least the poster.

You in NA or Europe? The IMAX AMC posters aren't coming until Sunday for the people wanting that sick Vader art in North America.

I read someone say something about
a ship ramming another ship
at one point.

Is this for real? Better than ROTJ? Almost TFA?

Judging from your posts here last year, I'm more hyped now.

The soundtrack just shipped today. Yay. It's one of the few big soundtracks that haven't leaked early. TFA leaked like a day or two beforehand, so that one was locked down pretty good too.

Better than ROTJ? Almost TFA?

It'd be almost embarrassing if it weren't better than ROTJ. :p

So, here's my short spoiler-free review of Rogue One: It's the best damn Star Wars film since Return of the Jedi. In the second half of the movie all I was thinking was: This is what The Force Awakens should've been.

Just saw the
vader
scene by accident, and I just giggled like a schoolgirl.

I can't wait to see it in the theater with the build up.
