What? Grand Slam #2 of 2009. On clay.
Where? Paris, with its infamous crowd.
When? May 24 - June 7.
Who? All the best tennis players, of course.

The draw is out. And unexpectedly there is a tiny smudgeon of excitement about maybe, possibly, someone beating Nadal on clay after Federer beat him in Madrid -- even though that was a surface Nadal didn't care much for / was tired / etc. The question is, will Djokovic or Federer take him on in the final?

The women's field looked wide open earlier this year, but Safina has become the clear favourite to win the it after finding confidence when she got the #1 ranking. Sharapova is back, but clay is by far her least favorite surface. The Williams sisters tanked here last year. Ivanovic is, depressingly, a different player than when she played the great final against Safina here last year. Teenager Azarenka a dark horse.

All that's left to say is:

'Allez up your fucking asses!'

Federer and Djokovic on the same side. Suddenly Nadal breathes a sigh of relief and starts clearing space for a new trophy.

Sorry Vaidisova, I've lost all faith in you. I blame that older man you're seeing!

I'll be throwing my support behind Caroline Wozniacki and of course the two British girls, Anne Keothavong and Melanie South which is awesome to have seen them qualify through ranking rather than wild-card/qualifier. We could even have two more girls join them through the qualifiers. Women's tennis in Britain is certainly on the up.

It would be good to see Bartoli or Mauresmo do well in their native land too.

As for the men's it's all about Murray.

Please win Federer. If you don't, please don't cry again.

Who am I kidding? Nadal has it in the bag again.

I support Federer on the men's side, with the expectation that he'll reach the semis with Djokovic and at least not choke anything away.

For the girls, Sharapova is close to my heart (who am I kidding, she's made of steel and probably not interested in matters of the heart), but I just want her to win a few matches, a few rounds -- she's just come back, she hates clay and I'm satisfied just seeing her on court.

My real support will be behind Azarenka, who I think has a fair chance to go real deep. I love Wozniacki as well, and I think she will be a contender for the US Open. Clay is her 'worst' surface, but she still reached the finals of Madrid! Love the fighting spirit of the danish queen of defense.

As for Ivanovic. Man. If only. This is a stunning display: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtC7pwG-tSk&fmt=18 . But she's not the same and only magic can bring her back.

As a dane i root for Wozniacki, but as the only danish tennis player who has made it to the top is the guy from metallica, i doubt that she will win :lol

Sorry, both qualifying GBR women lost in the last qualifying round. Oh well yall still have 2 women in the main draw.

isn't wozniacki polish?

Fed with an easy draw for the most part until the semis, Murray draws Juan Ignacio Chela round one, possible matchup with Zverev round two and maybe Montanes round 3. I'd say of the top 4 Murray go the toughest early round matchups. He'll probably coast through, but to me Nadal has a pretty comfy draw minus a round 3 matchup with an over the hill Lleyton Hewitt or Karlovic who isn't much of a scare on clay. Either way it looks like Nadal will take home the title again, the loser of Fed Djoko probably won't have the gas in the tank and Murray won't get to the semis at all.

I don't know...as much as I love fed, I sort of want him to lose just so when he defeats Nadal at Wimbledon this year, it'll be that much sweeter.

federer beat nadal in madrid, which is good for his morale; he knows he can do it. so hopefully the final will be more competitive than last year's.

Nadal will destroy Federer at Wimbledon too. If he hadn't been so nervous last year the match would've ended in three sets. Than and the rain. :P

Haha, slow it up cowboy. Fed will not go down in 3 sets to Nadal at Wimbledon, not this year.

But he will go down none-the less

I guess we'll have to wait and see, it will be very interesting to say the least. Fed still has a great shot, and Nadal could always go down to a random hot player. It all depends, I want to see how the French goes first.

Danish, polish, turkish...what does it matter? shes smokin hot

Looking at the file name I can see you making that mistake, but that's actually Nicole Vaidisova - former promising teenager, now horribly wasted potential - pictured, not Wozniacki. But Caroline isn't bad-looking either...

My predictions:

Women's: Who gives a shit.

Men's: Nadal with one functional knee takes it. :lol

No wonder they looked different than the rest on google image.

her parents are dp's from poland, so she's 100% polish but w/e

How ridiculous would it be if that was the deciding factor? If you're officially danish then you're officially danish, and Wozniacki has never been anything but. Parents have never had anything to do with that. BUT W/E

So far, most of my clay predictions have been right (that Nadal would beat Djokovic in Rome & Monte Carlo...and that he would beat Djokovic in 3 in Madrid), except for Federer beating Nadal in the final. I didn't see the match but I watched the highlights on YouTube.

So, I'll say this (think = know & know = want).

I KNOW that Djokovic will win the French Open, but I THINK that Nadal will win his 5th consecutive title :D

i hear what you're saying, dude. i for one ASSUME that nadal will win his fifth title, THINK federer will will win his first french open, KNOW murray will go all the way and get the championship and REASON it's djokovic's turn this year.

Ivanovic playing on the tennis channel right now. She's up a break already (3-1)

I don't subscribe to tennis channel, but its free right now if you have dish network. That's how I'm able to watch :D

edit: Damn, this V.Diatchenko girl from Russia they switched over to is a unique one. She swings the backhand on both sides, and on a service return, it looks like she's waiting for a pitch in baseball standing almost completely perpendicular to the net. But shes a cutie

Eurosport player with 7 courts covered, not bad, not bad at all. Ivanovic played brilliantly at times, erroneously at others. But still, 50 winners to 36 unforced errors... that's a lot of winners.

Depends.. if you mean a legal alternative you've got Eurosport player, if you're a Euro, or tennischannel.com if you're american. As for rip streams, channelsurfing.net always seem to offer some.

Only dutch contender:

Arantxa Rus. I have no idea how to pronounce her first name btw.

I just can't believe the amount of hot female tennis players nowadays.

I would like to see Federer take a slam on clay. That being said, I think at a big event like this he's going to have the last few major showdowns, including his embarrassing episode at the australian. No matter how driven and solid he is in the game of tennis, that will be eating away at him in the back of his mind. I think his chances of taking out Nadal in a Grand Slam final are rather small.

Also, should point out that Nadal hasn't looked his strongest on clay. Almost as if he's adjusted to the other surfaces and hasn't perfected his game yet (for this season), or that other players have adjusted to his style. We shall see...

I sincerely hope the man with a disgusting attitude and face (Murray) will bow out quickly. I don't like having to watch him.

Murray, I don't know. He's honest, emotional. I don't think his attitude is bad, just rather direct. He's admitted as much. Not his fault that he wears ugly big shirts (Fred Perry should know better).

Luckily Federer just signed a new sponsorship deal with Kleenex. He'll need them after Nadal makes him cry like a little girl again.

The guy is a dipshit from what I've seen. He's a dick to other players, he's a showboating punk, and he's ugly as fuck.
