Royal Rumble |OT| Garbage

Just watched this here in he UK.

Garbage indeed, but I would have been grateful if the hilarious thread title change hadn't spoiled the result.

Orton is horrible. The Big Show has more varied offense than him. Orton makes Khali look like El Torito in terms of speed.

Every time I see Orton on the TV I know it's going to be a boring segment. I'd rather watch that one guy on youtube RKO drive-through speaker. It's far more entertaining lol

I already bought his shirt, but the little jimmies are still on that Cena shit. WWE is afraid of losing that crowd if they bury Cena for Daniel Bryan. I don't even know why Orton has the belt. He's such a boring champion.

I agree. I don't think it appeals to the younger crowd.

A problem is Bryan's merch doesn't have a "style" to it, it's a mish mash of goofy shirts. Cena has a (butt ugly) style to his merchandise, Punk has a style to it, Orton's has a style, AJ's has a style to it, and Cena, Orton, Punk, Bryan and AJ are the top merch sellers.

They need to make a unified theme for Bryan's merch already.

Batista won the rumble? That's, odd to me. I don't know much about him, but coming back and in the same week winning a paperview seems a tad dumb, or is that common? I have nothing against him, really, I just don't understand why he won. Is he going to get a big push or something? Isn't he like 45 years old?

Im very confused about that too, I just dont see why you put him in WM when he's a star that just could've been in a match why the title match? I think this will be changed before WM hits cause its strange , Even the Rock had time to host WM the had PPV build up to WM. I guess BroTista is back to work even though many point to a promotion for a movie...well he could've done that a million different ways before...SummerSlam or MitB , the guy really is back back i guess. They just squandered it by having him win the Rumble though he coulda went around beating people up with his high intensity move set getting the crowd hype for weeks and got put in a match for WM. I still think he will be changed out.

It's mind boggling that they haven't done so yet with the amount of pop he's been getting. I doubt they will bother if they decide to bury him tonight.

Wow I can't wait to see how Batista freaks out if the fans turn on him. He can't handle it at all. Cena is so much better and dealing with it.

They are launching the WWE network next month, and they are going to need more than just the diehard WWE universe to buy into it to make it a success, so they are going to need to target the people that were fans in the 80s, 90s and early 00s to get back into wrestling and subscribe...hence Batista (and the talk of Hogan being back for WM)

Cena always treats a rowdy crowd as a challenge to turn them over to his side. That's something you have to appreciate about the guy even if you don't like him.

What made matters worse last night was that Batista was clearly out of shape, making his Rumble win even more hilarious. He was dead tired out there. lol

And considering that he fails 99.9% of the time and yet continues trying has to be appreciated as well!

Is Batista's return the worst "big" return for a superstar that's been gone for awhile and come back? I think it's been handled very poorly plus Batista looks so small and has titties now. His whole gimmick was he was a monster and now he's just a metrosexual Rock wannabe.

A slight issue, his merchandise is terrible. Punk's is very good, and he sells merch only second to Cena.

This. How hard could it be to make a good "YES" related shirt? The red one was alright, a fuckload better than the dumbass beard one he has now.

I remember hearing that Punk was outselling Cena at one point during 2011? Is that true or am I way off? I saw those white Punk shirts EVERYWHERE, and I haven't seen wrestling shirts in public since the Attitude Era.

This is your response after last night

LMFAO!

His gear was so odd, especially the boots. In fact, since he ran into the ring, there was a moment (right before he stepped in) that I thought he was wearing Jordans w/no socks with his trunks.

Yes, Punk was the top merch seller in 2011. His white "Best In The World" shirt is one of their best selling shirts in many years.
Even now he's the number two guy in merch sales.

Ok, so I was watching the PPV last night at a wings place, and we pretty much all crapped on it. We were chanting This is Awful, you both suck, and other stuff during the Cena/Orton match, and practically booed the hell out of everybody in the last 15 or so minutes of the Rumble. People were not happy. Unfortunately we couldn't hear the show that well, so we missed out on the crowd reactions.

Now I'm re-watching the PPV and HOLY SHIT! THIS FUCKING CROWD WAS BRUTAL. I knew they were pissed, but wow! I was not expecting such a negative response. It's like every single man, woman, and child was booing the hell out of everything. And Vince's damage control, via the commentary team, was nothing short of pathetic.

I've been watching WWE since 2007 after a taking 2 year hiatus, and I have never heard a crowd turn on a show so quickly, both on TV and in public. One of the best parts of the night was seeing people like Sheamus and Batista, who were greeted with HUGE cheers, quickly get booed towards the end of the rumble.

I mean, I'm almost speechless. It's bad enough to have a crowd turn on your show, but when it's the 2nd biggest show of the year, and the first stop towards your biggest one, what the hell do you do? And keep in mind, if the crowd tonight was negative, imagine some 70,000 in a domed arena.

I mean, where does WWE go from here? Does it even matter? Are people going to watch hoping for a good show, or are they going to watch just to see how much more of a disaster it becomes?

It seems like WWE wants Bryan to do EVERYTHING with little to no help:

Go sell this awful T-shirt that we put no effort in
Go sell PPV's while we spend the entire show talking about how much you suck, or are a nerd, or are to small, etc. (not just the heels, the fucking commentators)
Go pack house shows while we refuse to push you beyond a certain level

What, he can't do all that? There obviously is no money to be make in Bryan...

Honestly, the only way they should go is to put Bryan in that Batista vs. Orton match at Mania.

WWE is very lucky there's no alternative like WCW around, so they can do what they want and both the wrestlers and the viewing public have nowhere else to go. It's a shame.

And no guys, New Japan is not an alternative to WWE, it's great and awesome, but a completely different beast.

There's not even a 1% chance what happened at the end of the PPV was what WWE wanted. The crowd shitting on Batista and the Rumble? That's never desirable.
There's probably a smaller work going on, but as usual they wildly underestimated how popular Bryan is, and it went way out of control.

At the most it is that they will take advantage and then of course try and take some credit, but the reality of it is that it really is Vinnie Mac's worst nightmare and and you know he was seething inside at the end of the rumble.

Meltzer made some interesting points on the LAW last night, namely that when Daniel Bryan did get his push and PPV and rating numbers didn't really go up, the WWE might feel like they already gave the fans what they wanted and it didn't do good enough numbers. Another was that with the WWE Network starting up, this next WM needs to appeal to casual fans moer than ever to get them to buy into the network, so you might see them relying even more on nostalgia (hence Batista) and the "good old days" than ever before leading up to Wrestlemania 30.

I'm not buying that. The last Survivor Series buyrate was an absolute disaster, the lowest since the early 90's and the show largely built around Orton who was and still is champion. WWE is going to push whoever they want no matter what.

Orton is teflon, none of the rules about merch, quarter hour ratings, or PPV buys apply to him. I get Cena, for as much as I hate his act the kiddies still love him and he moves merch and ratings. Orton on the other hand seems to get a pass.

Such a disappointing show for so many reasons, but what really grinds my gears is the number of wasted spots in the Rumble itself. Khali, JBL, El Torito, Truth and arguably Kane were all a complete waste of time and valuable spots that could have been used to make the match...entertaining. The only surprise entrant was Nash? That guy who made the exact same comeback a couple of years ago having texted himself? Sting, Hogan, maybe AJ Styles, Generico, Taker? Just a little bit of effort would have really spiced things up.

lol people are still salty about Punk being beaten by the Rock? He literally had to have his 434 reign ended by arguably the most popular wrestler of all time. Made Punk look like a million bucks and gave him his best feud.

That said.

I'm still salty over last night. Judging how on-the-nose Bryan is being about it, maybe it's a work? But why the fuck would it be? Last night was the golden opportunity to send EVERYONE home happy and to start a phenomenal road to WrestleMania. Who fuckin' cares now.

I am here to eat crow. For I said after SummerSlam, that Daniel Bryan would win the Royal Rumble. Sigh.

edit: regarding Cena and Orton - I know a lot of people hated the match. Stadium included. But the fact that they were able to get the crowd (that was vehemently agains the match) kind of into the match near the end I think is a testament to their talents.
KANE LOOKED SICK THO

It's more that like Batista this year, Rock came in cold and then won a bunch without getting people invested.

Also, face Bryan vs heel Cena would actually draw huge. But they'll never pull the trigger on it.

Yeah. If the Rumble is 40 guys, you can afford one or two joke entrants. With 30 men, it really should be the top-tier guys and a few pleasant surprises/blasts from the past.

I was disappointed they didn't resolve Bryan v. Wyatt within the Rumble itself. And watching Brock Lesnar wheeze and gasp through 10 minutes of post-match chair shots was painful.

Anyone vs. a heel Cena would draw huge, but you are right.

Meltzer said it himself, WWE have always overrated Orton. Orton's a good worker, but he's never been the big draw they think he is.
Basically, if Orton were not who he was, he quite frankly would have been fired years ago. No joke.

he was wheezing and gasping after F5ing the Big Show! lol

I'm not even sure if the crowd wants that at this point. There's still a long way to go towards Wrestlemania so the crowd will likely simmer down, but if we keep seeing crowds that are close to we saw last night, that might some bad news (har har) for the WWE. If it keeps up, you know sooner or later we might see the negativity mentioned in the mainstream media, and if Vince catches wind of it he'll blow a gasket. Especially with the network launch and TV rights up for sale in a few weeks.

And yeah NJPW isn't really an alternative so to speak, but I'm a lot more excited about their product than WWE's right now.

I like how a lot of the tweets are making this look like a work. Maybe we bought right into WWE's foil?

This has to just be an worked angle. Nothing they're doing is making Bryan less marketable or popular; he's getting even more over than he was before because people believe he's being buried against their will.

Don't do this to yourselves.

It's mind boggling that they haven't done so yet with the amount of pop he's been getting. I doubt they will bother if they decide to bury him tonight.
They haven't even cared enough to name his new finisher any time in the last five months. A consistent theme for merchandise isn't coming any time soon.
