Watched the first three episodes (aka "Secret Origins") of Justice League and I'm underwhelmed. The animation leaves a lot to be desired. The narrative is mediocre, voice direction needs work. Wonder Woman's VA in particular kind of sucks. Hoping the other arcs are better.
She either gets alot better or just really grows on you imo.

Susan Eisenberg? She's great. In fact, I pretty much consider her the voice of Wonder Woman in the same way people consider Kevin Conroy the voice of Batman. She's the voice I "read" in my head.

Just chalk it up to the dialogue for her being a little stiff in the early episodes.

The first season is very underwhelming compared to the later ones. But skipping right to Starcrossed (season 2 finale) makes the impact so much less.

Susan Eisenberg is my favorite voice for Diana. She gets a lot better.

It's not just the dialogue, though the "world of man" crap makes my eyes roll badly. She doesn't sound very strong, which I get might be the point. At least there is Hawkgirl for the time being, until she grows.

I won't be skipping, that's not something I typically do.

Justice League starts off a little rough. It gets better as the series progresses, and manages to stay consistently great by the time Justice League Unlimited rolls around. (Especially in the narrative and animation departments)

And yeah, Wonder Woman's voice acting is a bit weird early on.

The Greatest Story Never Told is one of the best episode in any cartoon show.

Yeah, it's so sad that even in the toon he jobbed. Even got put in a bus towards the end :/

Man, that season 5 finale, when like a random dude in china turns into a dragon and helps out. I was like "Holy shit late new character introduction!"

Then he turned into J'onn and I was like :(

I mean, no offence J'onn, but I would have been really psyched about a dragon-themed chinese superhero

Also Flash is a great man in bed. Made Tala appreciate it!

Fastest Man Alive

"Epilogue" is probably my favorite episode. maybe one of my favorites of the entire DCAU.
that scene with Ace.

The absolute best thing about Ace, besides that scene, was that it added meaning to the name of Bruce's dog in Batman Beyond. (Besides it being based on Ace the Bat-Dog from the old comics, of course)

If it gets boring just skip ahead to Justice League Unlimited it's far superior. Justice League is really old now its from like 2000.

Flash was such a secret badass. Loved his punch.

Great moment and musical accompaniment.

Hells yeah.

Also, Epilogue was a fantastic freaking episode. Along with the Once and Future Thing. And the Great Brain Robbery. Damn it, there are too many.

But then you miss that fucking awesome episode where Supes gets 'killed' but in reality gets thrown like a bajillion years into the future and hangs out with Vandal Savage!

One of my absolute favourite episodes ever.

Vandal Savage is such a troll.

Kinda funny, but on a base level, Cadmus really did kinda have a point. A super-powered NGO with members with crazy nonsense superpowers and an orbiting superweapon. No wonder they were worried.

of course they acted on their worry by going nuts and then the lex/braniac combo really screwed the pooch, but still

And then Amanda Waller's answer to the whole problem is: Well, just make sure there's always a Batman!

I didn't think about it heavily until the Man of Steel thread but JLU probably has the purest comic book adaptation of a comic storyline in DCAU/DTV releases: "For the Man Who Has Everything".

Mongul exposes Superman to Black Mercy which traps him inside a dream world while the parasite eats him alive. He lives an entirely new life on Krypton with an amalgamation of Lois Lane and Lana Lang and has a family with her. Once he realizes what's going on, Superman has to end the dream by letting Krypton and his family die. After Batman pulls Black Mercy off of him (and gets stuck himself) Superman beats the shit out of Mongul.

I think the only compromise was shortening Batman's dream and the removal of Jason Todd, who defeated Mongul in the comic. The voice acting was superb though.

I always thought that's why Cadmus worked so well.. in theory.. they were in the right.

If the League decided to turn against the world.. we would have very little defense.

Cadmus's main problem is that they treat superheroes as gods. The whole arc was dedicated on showing the most powerful superhero (Superman) being "human", showing that he has emotions, he sometimes has flaws, etc. The whole idea was that they might be powerful superheroes, and they did make mistakes, they are humane enough not to cross that line.

Also I heard JLU was the start of JL being prime time? That explains the adult jokes. Heh, "boob tube".

I felt so bad for Superman at the end. That was a cruel trick by Mongul.

It was so good. My favorite part was the end though, when Billy told the main leaguers what he though about them.

"I guess what I'm saying is, I like being a hero"

I love the Question. I find myself watching Double Date more than just about any other episode. You can't go wrong with The Question, Huntress, Green Arrow, and Black Canary.

Probably one of my favorite couples. They work so well.

I recall reading somewhere that it's one of the few adaptations of Alan Moore's work that he actually likes.

I heard the episode of For The Man Who Has Everything was the only adaption of Alan Moore's work he endorsed (or like, I don't remember which)

/edit DAMN YOU MICKEY

Actually i think it was a legit response to the existence of a potential threat - global politics based on goodwill, especially with superpowers in the mix, not a fantastic idea. Cadmus's main problem was that their response to the situation wasn't to try and negotiate, legislate, or create a diplomatic solution; instead, they acted like crazy supervillains, create a clone army, and generally go nuts.

On that note, the episode in JLU where Green Arrow, Supergirl and Captain Atom end up in China had surprisingly little political messaging. Disappoint.

I thought it would be Batman Year One.. since pretty much a straight adaption of the comic with little modifications.

Honestly, I thought Batman Year One as an animation was kind of boring

I hope to god they do one last hurrah with a Bruce Timm helmed version of The Killing Joke with Hamil and Conroy. That would be...

I'm surprised the scientist didn't vouch for Booster Gold.

Although it seems he got the recognition anyway, since later Booster Gold appearances have him being in the frontlines.

People say skip the first season, but I think they should skip the last season. Outside of the Flash episodes, it isn't good at all. They clearly didn't expect to make that season and the stories and writing are really uninspired. It's such a bummer coming off the greatness right before it.

Season one is okay, but they went a little heavy with the two parters and Superman getting his ass kicked all the time. Season two of JL and season one of JLU are unstoppable. On the rewatch, one of my favorite episodes was the dream guy in season 2. All of the League falling asleep into their nightmares as a voice laughs over all of them was one of the creepier moments in the entire series.

As for the Bat Embargo, I thought Huntress/Black Canary were Bat-related, so why were they allowed on the show when everyone else had been cut out?

Technically they are Bat-related by virtue of being (mostly) in Gotham, but Birds of Prey generally stick to their own.

They weren't used in The Batman iirc. They're also largely standalone heroes actually - well, Black Canary more than Huntress, but still.

Huntress counts as her own thing for some reason despite originally being Batman's daughter.
Its how she was allowed to appear on Arrow.

Yeah I also liked that alot.

Don't think that was China, they never mentioned the country by name anyways. I thought it was meant to be an expy of North Korea

What's degrading about it? He named a dog he saved from a dog fighting ring who defended him against The Jokerz after a girl who helped save everyone from The Joker. It was a retroactive naming and all, but still. Can't see how it is anything but a nice tribute to Ace's memory.

It's just really neat.

They don't even say it, or even really imply it, but you can extrapolate it out and it seems like the kinda thing Brucie would do. He's a softy at heart. Real.. deep down... heart.

I really would like to see his 'public eye' slide from glamorous playboy to curmudgeonly old bastard. Although in his public appearances in Batman Beyond he still seemed to get a lot of rep, so maybe that didn't actually happen to Bruce Wayne.

I guess it's more of the comic fan inside of me arguing about that (Ace existing prior and such - it's the same reason people wondering why Green Lantern is "white-washed"). And I dunno, calling someone you know as the name of a dog has that weird... eh to me. But that's just me.

You should all be thanking the memory of the late Dwayne McDuffie, as he was the writer and or story editor of somewhere around three quarters of the Justice League cartoon run.

Smart guy and a very good writer. But, somehow he never really got a fair shake at writing a top book from either Marvel or DC, yet thrived in animation.

Very True

To be specific, it's the only adaptation where Alan Moore didn't ask to have his name removed from the credits.

Yeah, he got a dedication episode too.

There's some loose ends they didn't tie up though, like what ever happened to Galatea and Hamilton?

Aww man he's gone? Been watching some of the old BTAS making-ofs. Seemed rad.

I wonder if he was ever on Kevin Smith's Fat Man on Batman podcast. That shit was so rad
