The only thing I don't get about the Death Star in RotJ is how fast they have it up and running. The Empire started building the first one at the end of RotS so what, 20 years to build one? The Empire's engineers must have sat down and had a huge postmortem session on their design and operational efficiencies from the 1.0 product.

Because I doubt when Lucas wrote A New Hope he was thinking "this first Death Star took 20 years to build because I'm eventually going to end a prequel with the Death Star being started"

Is the length of time it took to make the first one ever mentioned in the OT?

Yeah, Lucas really punched us in the face with how much handholding and forcing down information to connect Revenge to New Hope.

You can always say that they were planning to make more than one Death Star or at least a secret back up one like they did in Contact. Also maybe the DS1 was built earlier and they were just upgrading it to be more powerful?

I don't think so. I always kind of assumed they built it fairly quickly because seemingly nobody knew about the Death Star in A New Hope until it was already done. If it took 20 years to build you'd think word would have been out for a while about it.

I don't think its too inconceivable, its not like they threw 20 years of experience in the garbage.

They worked out most of the kinks and just made some improvements. Plus they probably had a warchest of money like Nintendo supposedly does.

Maybe they even raided Nintendo's warchest to build it.

The folly was not finishing it completely, Letting Lando inside, to an even easier target than the port on the original Death Star.

Just seems like an oversight then to start the first at the end of RotS. In the end, I'm more joking than nitpicking.

It's like the Machine in Contact. "Never build one when you can have two are twice the cost"

I figure they started construction on Death Star 2 soon before the completion of Death Star1.

I've softened my stance on Ewoks over the years.

The Ewoks are a natural fit for the Star Wars Universe.

Jar Jar and Gungans I can live without.

I was always under the impression that the Empire started building the second Death Star almost immediately after the destruction of the first one, meaning it was being built during Empire Strikes Back.

The Empire got dem deep pockets. I think I had a book-on-tape when I was a kid that implied they started the second after the destruction of the first but that's hardly concrete information.

"Jar Jar Binks makes the Ewoks look like... fucking Shaft!"

Here's the space battle from ROTJ without the Endor or Emperor scenes: www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPZigWFyK2o

Still the best space battle on film IMO.
This is so true.

Even the space battles in the prequels looked like shit next to the scenes in Empire and ROTJ. The way Fast and the Furious nailed the way to make driving a car exciting, Lucas and company did the same for Star Wars back in the day. Hopefully JJ can somehow find a way to improve upon it.

Wicked man, I love that three way battle on Endor, space, and on the Death Star, it seems like it was really well worked out and thought through by the writers and directors and while it's not as iconic as the exhaust port from four, I think in its entirety the climax is superior to the first one.

Still Empire just shades it for me in terms of story and plot development.

'IT'S A TRAP!'

Glad to see some reason on GAF when it comes to Jedi. Empire is still my favorite, but Jedi is just so damn satisfying. I think too that people get too hung on the 'what if' when it comes to Wookies at the end, and that's understandable, but Ewoks never really bothered me. And it's more than offset by a great space battle and Vader/Luke/Emperor.

Does his best thinking in the flying car
Jedi is my least favorite of the OG trilogy.

But that's not really a put down. It's the damn OG trilogy. They are all awesome.

Hmm, I think the right order is Empire > New Hope > Jedi >>> Phantom Menace >> the rest. Jedi is still great, but it has some elements that I kind of dislike. The beginning is bit strange, and takes little too long, and the bike chase scene is somewhat pointless - but still looks good. Ewoks are not JarJar annoying, but I'd still prefer some other kind of alien race. And the space battle at the end is not as good as other space battles we saw, so it's a bit of a letdown.

Edit: Phantom is watchable because at least there are interesting sets and foreshadowing, and the fight at the end is very well done. Too bad the sequels were so shitty in sets (computer generated) and action scenes (too many robots and cgi actors).

Jedi does have 2 things I really love. That laughing creature that is with Jabba (I don't know why I like it so much, I love when it's just looking around at Jabba's tail), and the emperor saying the line "Oh, I'm afraid the deflector shield will be quite operational when your friends arrive". He just says it so deliciously.

Empire and Jedi are almost on the same level for me, but Cloud City just knocks it out of the park.

Empire also has the best soundtrack of the series.

the best part about ROTJ is the Battle of Endor level in Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2, where you can play as the car with codes

The 2nd death star was just a giant trap for Luke anyway. Sheev's a bigger thinker than y'all

i cant believe they named him sheev still...
I mean, I guess we would be seeing more of him if they even bothered to name him (probably in that rogue movie?), otherwise it would have been better to have it unknown

good credit (by proxy)
I'm gonna say it: A New Hope kinda sucks. It works great as a vehicle for bringing us the 2nd and 3rd movie though. It's somewhat lackluster mostly due to its budget, I think.

Having just rewatched it, this movie is so weird, it's like Luke looked younger as the film progressed. By the end he looked alright.

Also, this movie has the saddest shot in the OT.

That carbonite really changed him. What a waste of an awesome character.

Really love the Emperor though.

It's the worst of the original by far, you have an awful taste OP. The Jabba's scene was one of the worst scripted piece of action ever made in a big budget movie, horrendous in every sense. Also the Wookies inclusion in the end was cringe worthy, really bad and unnecessary.
