It's definitely a yellow in the eyes of the law but if I do think that if Nigel Owens gave him a yellow card then it should have been a yellow card for both players. This is happening more and more in rugby and the people choosing to roll like that need to understand that there are consequences for cheating, particularly when it is a rule that is designed to protect them and also carries a card.

Yeah right. Lifting past the horizontal is the law and he didn't do that, not until the Scottish player deliberately fell to the side. I don't even think it was a penalty offence.
The issue is with the law itself though, it doesn't take into account what the tackled player does when tackled, which is the issue I have with it. If you tackle somebody and there feet lift off the ground, it's your responsibility alone as the tackler to get them down on their feet.

What the tackled player does while in the air is not relevant to this law.

This is an issue I've had with it since the IRB started treating tackles in this way just before the last world cup. As time goes on, more and more players are turning standard tackles into offences that more often than not will see the tackler being sent off.

I have no issues at all with the IRB looking after player safety by making tip tackles illegal but with the law as it is, it makes a mockery of their attempt to make things safer for players.

Here's the actual law:

10.4j Lifting a player from the ground and dropping or driving that player into the ground whilst that player's feet are still off the ground such that the player's head and/or upper body come into contact with the ground is dangerous play.

Everything else is just an interpretation of the rule, which gives the refs and judiciary some wiggle room when dealing with specific cases. I agree that they need to take rolling out of a lift into account in the interpretations but it's not a yellow card according to the actual law, as he wasn't dropped or driven into the ground.

Given how screwed up and inconsistent the judiciary is though, who knows what'll happen to him over the next week.

Edit: Apparently his foot was on the ground right up until he rolled to the side, which makes the penalty even dumber. I need another look at it.

Think Englands place kicking will see them through. Australia's lack of 'competitive' games might come in to it as well.

Horrible mistake by Brown early. They got away with it.

Jesus, the pressure is immense. Totally different feel to the SA v SCOT game earlier. Really looking forward to this. I'm Irish, but I'd like to see England make it out of the group for the sake of the tourney. Would be awesome to beat England in a world cup final :)

Time from whistle to first performance of Swing Low by the crowd: two and a half minutes.

I remember when every rugby crowd knew more than one song. End of schoolboys sections was the end of that.

This is not looking good for England. Australia clearly the better team so far, and have a clear cutting edge.

Yeesh, gonna be tough. 10-3

All came from Brown's knock-on. I give it another 30 mins before Brown loses it totally with someone.

Yeah, I will struggle to stay positive given how it's looking (and as a Newcastle UTD fan after todays thumping)

So much for 'blowing them away in the first 20 minutes', though.

I always thought that was a stupid comment. You want to be the side who wins the last 20 minutes, not the first.

I agree, we blew away Wales and then completely capitulated in the end. I'd much rather the other way round
