Quarters? His world cup is over

It's hilarious to see what was the rhetoric on this topic yesterday and that the actual dirty play was actually from an Irish. They should have played at 14 basically all the match. I suppose it's a good revenge for Thierry Henry's hand lol.

France sucked yesterday btw

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. France is always an easy target lol

But again the topic is full of brits so it's understandable :)

France went in hard and fair I'd say most Irish realise that. Just unfortunate it injured some of our guys. Targeting a player is different from going out to injure someone and I don't think they went out to injure Jonny. We all see differently when a game is on and the adrenaline is high.

The punch wasn't shown on television so none of us would have known at the time.

Well said mate. Respect :)

Anyway what O'brien did was an isolated incident. The irish always play fair and square. French TV didn't even show it during the game. News articles started to pop up after the game.

I still think Ireland will beat Argentina and NZ is going to beat us. We're just too weak this year.

Sure, I'm not saying Japan definitely would've won if they'd been given another 2-3 days rest, I'm saying they weren't even given a chance thanks to the draw. You and CCS aren't disagreeing that, are you?

As for NZs fitness, well that's been a key weapon in our arsenal for well over 30 years at this point, so it's something everyone knows about. A lot of the NH teams have only relatively recently started focusing on that aspect, partly because half the teams at the RWC seem to be coached by NZers!

Well, not giving them 'a' chance would have been somehow banning them from playing the game at all, but I assume you don't mean that!

Of course the way it was drawn helped Scotland - I don't think any fan doubts that, it's just a lot of people seem to think Scotland don't deserve to be in the quarter finals. We came second in the group, we deserve to be there - the way it was drawn isn't Scotland's fault.

O'Connell joins O'Mahoney in being ruled out of the rest of the world cup, ending his Ireland career in the process. Very sad way for such a wonderful international career to end.

Now we have a bit of a break, I'm trying to get my head around a Rugby OT Community.

For the OP I'm thinking along the lines of:
- Nice picture
- (Regularly updated) what is going on now stuff
- Brief intro to the game with links
- Brief intro to major tournaments and leagues with links
- Something inclusive about all the lesser strands of Rugby going on around the world

That bit, with some help, should not be too hard. The only hard questions seem to me to be:
- do I include our Rugby League brethen (which I know nearly nothing about)? I guess the answer is we see what happens
- do I include Sevens? Which I think the answer to has got to be yes.

Any thoughts guys?

That sounds good. I'm not an expert but I could write up a short explanation of league and summarise the main competitions.

Sevens is a good idea, especially with the Olympics coming up.

League's a different sport so if you're including it, you may as well include all the other rugby spinoffs (NFL, AFL, etc.) at that point. So no, I wouldn't do that at all. Plus I think it'd be a bad idea to pollute the thread with bogans.

Sevens should absolutely be included though.

OK. I will go for a Rugby Union OT (though I will give a passing nod to League just in case) and including Sevens. Will try to get thread set up this week while the World Cup is still on so we attract as many as possible.

Referees have been picked:
NZ/Fra: Nigel Owens. Assistant referees are Jaco Peyper and John Lacey. TMO is Shaun Veldsman
SA/Wal: Wayne Barnes. Assistant referees are George Clancy and JP Doyle. TMO Graham Hughes
Arg/Ire: Jérôme Garces. Assistant referees are Romain Poite and Chris Pollock. TMO is George Ayoub
Aus/Sco: Craig Joubert. Assistant referees are Glen Jackson and Pascal Gauzere. TMO is Ben Skeen

I'm very happy about Owens. Not so happy with Peyper or Veldsman but Owens will probably just ignore them if they say something stupid anyway.

Looking at the other games, Joubert is being wasted. He should be reffing Argentina vs Ireland.

I'm a kiwi living in AUS... I am happy to hear about the new scrum coach and all his good work. Slightly jealous that he made scrum work fun and now they are really getting their shit together... Its been a mess for a decade

Think that's ridiculous - Ross Ford and Jonny Gray have been given 3 weeks each for their citing!

So the lesson from this World Cup is that you can do anything you like (shoulder charge, kick a guy in the head, knee someone, etc.) and you'll get off with a slap on the wrist so long as you're white and not Scottish.

As someone else put on another forum, it's good to have it finally confirmed we're a Tier 2 nation!

In fairness, it was a reactionary punch and not just out of the blue and was open handed rather than a closed fist. O'Brien's incident caused what? Maybe a slight discomfort for Papé. The Scots tackle could have broken the Samoans neck. If anything, Scot's should be more disappointed at Pocock getting off than O'Brien's ban.

Also where'd the Celtic love go?

You have to be be able to roll the man at the ruck though. Otherwise it's just whoever gets there first wins.

Also, hope Wales win. I'm torn because I'd like Ireland to win but it would also be great for Argentina to make the semis.

The main issue I have is every tip tackle (I think?) that's been cited at this world cup has received a one week ban. How a slow tackle like that from a low height is worthy of being banned for three times as long I don't know.

Also, even if it is dangerous, Ford didn't deserve a ban because he was barely involved, any dangerous play was solely from Gray.

Oops. Hope nobody was relying on the match timings in the OP - I had the times of all the quarters and the semis and the finals wrong.

Now corrected according to the World Cup site.

Ford and Gray released on appeal and free to play immediately. "Tackle was not dangerous."

Also, C'MON WAAALES!!

I think SA will be too strong for Wales but who knows, weirder things have happened at this World Cup.

Wales should really target Kriel because his defence is a bit suspect.

What is Cuthbert doing playing international rugby, let alone a quarter final? Dude is rubbish.
Well, he used to be terrible at everything but he did keep scoring tries. Now, he's just terrible at everything.

No idea why he's still playing though, it's almost like having a schoolboy in an international team.
