A few years ago I would never have imagined I'd be saying this, but Argentina have just been far too good for Ireland. Far, far too good.

The fact is, Argentina are now a properly, properly good team. Better than some of the northern hemisphere teams without question.

So, the last northern hemisphere team left in the tourney is Scotland. Who'd have thunk it (I realise this will have changed in about 3 hours time)

Argentina look like they will be a tough game in the semis though.

The discipline and defending has been schoolboy levels at times from Ireland. No organisation, no structure, no intelligence at all.

That's why teams like Georgia and Japan need to be brought into the fold. Argentina were a good team 4 years ago but playing (and mostly losing) against NZ, Aus and SA every year has forced them to adapt and improve.

Georgia should be brought into the 6 Nations somehow, so should Romania. Logistics wise, probably makes more sense for Japan to join the Southern Hemisphere teams (given they now have a Super Rugby team).

It's the speed of Argentian that has killed Ireland. Simply too quick with sniping runs around the breakdown and quick off loading.
Just too slow from Ireland and too quick from Argentina.

Ireland in the semi-finals of the 2019 World Cup, star kicker and experienced kicker Ian Madigan in tow -- mark my words!

Argentina have a decent shot at the final if they play like that.

Can we get an update on this...

Great game. Gorgeous plays at time for Argentina. Ireland had the courage and believed, but that's pretty much all they had. That stupid yellow card could have turned the game around, but in the end the better team won.

I think Argentina has the best passing game after AB in this world cup.

Remember, they played very well against AB for a good part of the game.

Well if you follow that Ireland and/or Wales are the best teams in the NH then Argentina are definitely better than anything we have to offer. Although I will say the game would've been closer had we a full strength side that's still just excuse making. There needs to be a full evaluation as to how teams in Europe play the game.

From Reddit:

The northern hemisphere will look up and shout "save us" and we will whisper "no". - Scotland.

But seriously NH fans, don't rest all your hopes on us beating Australia, it will only end in tears.

Can't disagree with you there at all.

Problem is that 8 teams is a bit too much for a yearly tournament.

Maybe every 4 years a Euro tournament. But there's not enough teams.

I would support a 2-tier 4 team tournament, or maybe bring in a couple of others (Russia and Spain/Portugal?) and have 2 tiers of 5.

Being able to rub it into everyone's face that we made it further than any other NH team would be lovely tbh. I would bring it up anytime someone started talking shit bout us.

Exactly, I just want to have something to be proud of. I'm only 21, I don't remember a Scotland team that was actually world-class.

Even still it doesn't really help the solution of improving the other European nations. There already is a tier 2 '6 nations' tournament in place.

Promotion/reg won't help as it will just be Scotland or Italy being relegated then straight back up the next year.

The weaker European nations need to be playing the stronger teams more often. That's the only real way to improve. But structurally it's a tough problem to work out due to how big the gap is.

It's a difficult one and I don't know the solution sadly.

How much has regular tests against SAF, NZ and AUS in the Rugby Championship helped Argentina since 2011? I think your answer was out there tonight.

LOL at the ITV people being on about Ireland drawing Bosnia in the football "Which isn't so bad". Tell that to Wales...

Funny thing, Bosnia aren't bad, the name just sounds a bit obscure to idiot pundits. Ireland will have to play a lot better to beat them.

What's worrying is the English seem intent on killing the International game in the northern hemisphere. Their club sides are demanding a say in the selection of the next head coach and in how their "assets" are managed with England. They're going to do to the rugby side with the premier league clubs have done to the soccer side. Worried for the Six Nations.

What Ireland need to do is start bringing through some of the exciting young players we have at our disposal who have yet to be blooded at international level. Schmidt is one of the best coaches in the world and has built a system that allows players of lesser quality to come in and fulfill the job of the better player who is injured or whatever. The problem is that to achieve that you need a restrictive, rote game plan so everyone, be they of lesser ability, knows their job and can do it. That means you're solid and hard to beat, but you have a restrictive plan as a result. Ireland haven't been a great attacking side for years. Our set piece and rucking is top notch but we dont attack well because we're not set up to do it. We pick wings and full backs who may not be the best runners, but who can contribute best to the overall plan. We don't offload much and don't take much risk in attack. The Southern Hemisphere sides, bar South Africa, have shown us that the way the game is going is for an all court, attacking game.

Argentina has also recently started winning games in the four nations as well, they landed wins over both SA and Aussie last tourny im pretty sure.

edit: i need my bed, flying back from bristol after watching the ABs ruin the french. god that was so satisfying.

got sucker punched by a welsh wanker in the taxi line on the way home which was less awesome, didnt hurt but the coward broke my glasses.

Agreed, though it's hard to see where things will go with Japan from here. Eddie Jones is heading off to coach the Stormers, which is really bad news. They needed to retain him. And the Super Rugby team seems to be a complete mess, with no players signed so far, them being put on the South African side of the competition and playing half their home games in bloody Singapore.

Great game and I feel for the Irish team and fans but the better team won in the end. The scary thing is a) Most of this bloody Argentinian squad will be in their Super Rugby team next year, which is a terrifying prospect and b) This Argie team is still improving with every year.

Geez, what positives do you take from that game if you're Schmidt? It really seems like Northern Hemisphere rugby in general has been a bit exposed at this RWC. There just doesn't like there are any real attacking threats, so defences have continually shut them down with relative ease. And with the Southern teams adopting a very fast paced game over the last few years, it seems like the gulf in fitness levels has once again reared its head.

As an irishman I'm thoroughly disappointed but full credit to Argentina. They blew us off the park and were absolutely deserved winners. Their wingers are absolutely outstanding. I'd like to see them win it.

Some people may disagree with me here, but I believe there's a perception amongst the Irish Union that the World Cup isn't that important. The 6 Nations is where they make their money and the World Cup, only coming once every four years is a distraction. I'd love to see us take the entire four years to blood in the next generation of exciting young backs, and bruising forwards and to build towards an attacking style of play. But that would mean sacrificing a few 6 Nations in preparation. The higher you finish in that competition the more money you get. Not sure the IRFU would go for that.
