{Rumor} "iPhone 8" - New drawing/rendering leak

This is probably the dumbest fanboy meme I've ever seen. The Samsung holes are actually consistently lined up. It's just not the same configuration as Apple's:

S7, S7 Edge, Note

There's no better here; just different:

I think you misunderstood the complaint. The holes don't line up with each other on a single phone, not across the phone family.

I understood the complaint: 'the center of the holes aren't in a straight line like on the iPhone'. What I obviously don't understand is why it should be like the iPhone

Aesthetics.

It's not a big deal, but it's something that's bugged me about Samsung flagships since before I switched to iPhones a few years back.

That said, as I've said here and elsewhere, the S8 is absolutely gorgeous (on the front anyway. Not a big fan of the fingerprint sensor next to the camera).

Aesthetics.
Bah. "Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works." I've seen no justification why I should care about this center alignment. Apple's fake holes for symmetry when there weren't stereo speakers were actually more offensive to me than Samsung's differently aligned holes

I know. I was joking.
Check the email tag when you quote my original post.

Though I don't use Google Maps anymore. Apple Maps went from absolutely unusable at launch to pretty damn good now (YMMV, as with anything else).

google still generally better around where I live. no reason to switch back to apple maps, especially these days when i go between android and ios frequently. just more convenient.

If the front camera truly is embedded in the display, FaceTime just got a MAJOR level up. That solves the awkward looking at the other person talking on the screen while the camera is above.

Edit; I'm trippin. Based on the diagram, it's the same old placement, but behind the screen?

How does what you quoted merit that response?

I really liked the S8/+ design. I was waiting to see what Apple was going to do with the 8 (given it's the 10th anniv. of iPhone) before I made my purchasing decision. Now that these "renders" and leaks are out there, it made my decision a lot easier, as the S8 design is leagues ahead.

Tell me exactly where you got lost.

You're basing your decision off unofficial guess renders? Righto buddy.

Everything is bullshit until some verified reputable leaks come out

The only reason I could see us getting a glass backplate again is for wireless charging. If there's no wireless charging on this year's model, we're getting aluminum again.

I'm honestly not even sure what it will take to make me want to upgrade my 6s+. Possibly some cool AR/VR applications but I'd want to try it out first

I used an iPhone 5s the other day.

Unusable.

Can't believe there are people still going with such a slow, small phone.
lmao, the hyperbole. It certainly is lacking speed, size and features if you are comparing it to more recent high end phones but it's still a fine daily driver and receives the latest updates.

--

Considering how the camera alignment is seemingly a AR thing, have we heard any rumors about AR features launching alongside the phone? I'm not even exactly sure what would be a useful application for phone AR...

All speculation so far but here's some stuff.

Those stuffs like camera and fingnerprint being embedded below the screen is rather a big thing. Hope Samsung catch up quick. Putting fingerprint sensor behind near the camera on the S8 is a mistake

The concept looks cool, but it really looks like they photoshopped an iPhone 7 and took the original iPhone home screen wallpaper and made it bigger. I am sure whatever Apple shows it will be better.

Also there were rumors floating around that Apple was having a hard time getting the touch ID finger print sensor to work under the display. I think it was a yield issue according to macrumors. I hope they dont delay this phone over that. Just move it to the back and be done with it. This is the year Apple moves to using the superior OLED screens. Its really time for it. Samsung has been using them for years and they have much better screens than iPhones. Thats not to say Apple does a great job color calibrating theirs, but I think their LCD's are maxed out in terms of what they can do. The press will tear Apple a new on if they release just a 7s and a 7s+. Selling just the same designed phone since like 2014 wont look good.

EDIT: I also doubt the base model of this device will cost $1000. The high end storage model could go that high, but a 64 or 128gig model should retail for less. I am on the Apple upgrade program so I will use that as its a pretty good deal.

I wonder what A11 will bring. Apple has continually surprised by pushing forward per-core performance while sticking to two active cores, I wonder where those advances will end.

Granted as it's a major external redesign, the processor update is probably more minor like the 6, rather than another major overhaul like the 5S/6S.

That's fine, it will still beat out Qualcomm's offerings. Fuck, I'm super excited for this phone. Makes me not want to purchase anything on Google Play because I may not be in the ecosystem for long. Love my Pixel tho and if Google's offering is just as impressive then I may stay there.

Hard to say. The A7, A9, and A10 Fusion were all pretty substantial revamps, and the A11 is due for a process node shrink, I believe. I wouldn't be surprised to see it be only slightly changed from the A10 Fusion, sure, but the process node shrink ought to still result in pretty substantial performance per watt improvements.

It'll most likely jump down to TSMC 10nm, but I think they have major architectural overhauls on the opposite ends (like Intel used to with tick tock). A10 was already a big uArch overhaul so we'll probably see the "Tick" to that.
You know, as I'm typing that, apart from the not-big.little addition A10 big core is closer to A9 than A9 to A8 (a9-A10 was a 28% overclock, which was a large part of the benefit), so maybe we will see both at the same time after all. Hmm.

The GPU would likely see the easiest benefit from a shrink, since they're inherently so parallel.

The bonkers thing is that the A10 is already giving the brand new hotness, the S835, a run for its money. The per-core performance lead is getting silly and hasn't abated as I would have expected 3 years ago.

Anandtech better actually follow through and review it this time, heh.

Given what's going on with the iPad Pro, it looks like those are likely to get refreshed in October, too, so we might also have an A11X to look forward to (after literally zero non-iPhone devices with an A10-based chip).

Looking at these renders are we thinking apple won't open up the entire display for things? If there is constantly going to be a bar on the bottom with the digital buttons there, what would be the point?

If I had to guess the there will be areas of the screen developers never use directly (top status bar) or can only use through a sort of extension (special function keys at the bottom) at least initially. There will probably be a rectangular area with the same ratio as the current screen so legacy apps "just work"

I've decided to go for an iPhone with my new contract in June.

So I'm new to the Apple game as I'm fed up with mid-class Androids that run like shit after a couple of months.

Are these rumors/renders that pop up every year close to the final phone? Can we expect a huge leap over the 7 because it's the 10th anniversary? I'm wondering if I can wait until September (?) for the new iPhone...

The rumours start out sketchy but all the sources are starting to consolidate around a consensus. I think these will be mostly accurate barring last minute changes.

Do note this cost probably twice as much as your mid class android if the $1000 rumor price is correct lol.

Yeah, I'm aware of that. Official price tag for the 7 is 850€ (750$). So I guess the 8 will be 1100€ (1000$)? This is crazy but rumors are 1000$ right?

I'm very happy with my 7+ and won't likely be upgrading again for a few years. However this near-bezel-less design is pretty interesting as is the Xiaomi Mix.

What I would be interested in the most would be how it looks during full screen video playback.

Don't buy mid-class phones, then. You're making an unfair comparison. Pixel works great.

It gets kind of hard to justify shelling out so much for Android flagships when they get beat so badly in performance

Not really

The worst performing Android in both Geekbench and in real world app launching and booting is Google's own Pixel, apparently due to its slightly lower-clocked chip, and despite packing 4GB of RAM and all of the optimization and credibility Google can prop it up with.

it's going to be a huge update. You should wait.

lol

Comparing midclass Android with $1k iPhone. Classic.
