Yeah they named that gene a long time ago. In addition to brain formation, SHH is important for limb formation. There was this experiment where they transplanted cells expressing SHH from one part of a chicken limb bud to another part. Then the chicken developed to form two mirror image limbs where there should have been one. It's drosophila homolog, hedgehog, is important for segment patterning during development. Er, that's about all I remember from the class I took last year.
