This scene used to feature the single greatest frame in Sailor Moon history.

And yes, it's a shame that the new show doesn't have all those goofballs. They really made comedic parts more funny and dynamic, something the new series seriously misses.

Even manga has goofy panels or at least goofy chibi-heads on sidepanels or inside dialog bubbles.

Close.
Sailor Ceres, Sailor Vesta, etc.

Yeah...
Chibi–Usa's/Small Lady Serenity's entourage are planetoids/asteroids.
Pluto is fine.

Anyway... Episode 2 will decide how the show will proceed.
If they stick to the original material, Jadeite is going to get killed off iirc.

Not yet. Mercury's chapter is still similar in the original. It's 3 where they start to diverge with
Mamoru finding out Usagi's identity and Mars killing Jadeite.

Ah, then I missed something. The manga isn't exactly dear to me...
because those guys get killed off way too fast.

Also, someone told me yesterday that if they stick to a one–episode–per–chapter pacing, they'd be done with the first two arcs by the time the show would end. Makes sense to me since
the Silver Crystal is only relevant in the Dark Kingdom and Black Moon story lines.

Wow, Jadeite's not gonna get much development is he?

Nephrite's getting killed in the same chapter he appears in iirc. Much worse, because his storyline was the most interesting part in the old show (concerning Naru's crush on him and the conflict that ensued between her and Usagi as a result).

Yep. I had suspected ever since one of the interviews mentioned Chibi-usa, but after seeing the TBC card yesterday I'm almost positive they will go all the way through the first two.

It makes me wonder what kind of unifying them they could use for the second half of the story. I suppose it kind of climaxes with the
coronation
?

It's an ONA and it's being broadcast worldwide. Probably they want to expose people to the episodes as long as they can.

Well, this isn't the original anime that we're dealing with. Especially when this series is going to be mostly going off of the manga & that it'll only be 26 episodes long.

My big beef with this is the non-expressiveness of the animation compared to the original. Other than that it's good IMO.

I think this distinction was made clear by a sizeable amount of people – although one alteration, albeit only concerning a minor detail, has already been made.

I wonder if they'll also incorporate a few changes from the Kanzenban edition – i.e. the disc turning up in the next episode being a CD or a floppy disc.
And I wonder whether or not they'll put in the backstory for Jadeite and the other three.

It would be a shame if they don't take
Kunzite's part
from Sailor V, but I'm not sure they'll be able to squeeze it in.

Bits and pieces from Casablanca Memories could work though.

I have no recollection of these things whatsoever. When I get back home in three weeks, I should read the manga again to get myself up to speed.

(And I need to go and get the DVD sets for R)

Not with the pace that the manga goes.
At least in the anime, the Four Heavenly Warriors got more exposure due to monster-of-the-week filler. The anime made them actually have more of a character. I think I recall only Kunzite got a bit more time in the manga?

Not to mention PGSM made him the butt-monkey of the group.

Poor guy.

I need to re-watch that at some point. I forgot that
he turns good and ends up as a part-time worker

Show was an interesting sentai-like show. Zippers were easily visable on the monsters :p

It's called milking it for as long as possible.
I don't think that is the case. What seems likely to me is that the project is low on the priority totem pole at Toei. As a result, the odd production schedule is necessary so it doesn't look like complete shit.

But it still looks pretty poor .

Toei are well known to be the cheapest of cheapskate companies in the industry.

Its amazing that Sailor Moon isn't a complete train wreck.

Heh, one amusing development of this show coming out is all the people who will discover that the "filler" in the old anime actually isn't.

I could be wrong, but I'm sure Mercury's chapter has some differences to the original anime.

In the anime, they suspect Ami is a bad guy until they find she is Sailor Mercury. In the manga, they don't suspect Ami is evil at any point.

I don't really understand why Toei treat their massive money makers with low production values etc, Dragonball and Sailor Moon should be treated with the best quality animation and budgets.

They don't have to though.

Manga adaptation spoiler Q- is the sad doomed romance between one of the villains and a human girl in the Manga, or was that Anime-only?

As a kid, that was pretty mind-blowing, had never seen stuff like that on TV before in kid's shows.

Any humanization of the enemies is almost certainly an anime-only addition in the first season.

Did I read that right? Bun-head? Bah. lol

I liked it. The style is interesting and her transformation I thought looked okay. Gave me back those feels for the show.

2 week waits though. :(

At best people will come out appreciating the original series more. You filler fiends won't get the vindication you so crave. ;)

The original sailor moon anime is weird, because by typical definition of filler anything that wasn't in the manga = filler but that would basically make 95% of the original SM anime filler. The thing is the original SM anime wasn't trying to be an adaptation of the manga, it basically took the main concepts of the manga as inspiration and went off in it's own direction.

In context of it's own series you can argue the original Sailor Moon has "filler" that is just padding episodes that don't move the main story forward... but it's a sentai series generally 70% of the episodes in sentai series are "filler" that don't really move the main story forward but are just random monster of the week. Considering in sentai series the monster of the week is generally what people tune in for it's not really something to jump up and down and be upset about.

I enjoyed it, but if I'm being honest my only memory of the original series was them fighting a giant monstrous toothpaste bottle so I really don't have much to compare it to. I'm no stranger to new adaptations of beloved old things though so I can understand if some don't like it.

That is a literal translation and what they would be called in English.

I can't figure out whether people in Japan started calling hair buns "dango" before Sailor Moon made it popular though...

Okay, just rewatched the first episode of this and the original anime to compare. My biggest gripe with Crystal so far is the editing, it just jumps from manga plot points with no flow. For example, Mamoru's debut:

Crystal: Mamoru is shown standing still in the frame with Usagi when Usagi hits him, thus it gives the impression he was just waiting for her to hit him.

Classic: The frame shows Usagi isolated, then she throws the test, and the scene cuts to the paper hitting hitting Mamoru's head. Due to this cut, the scene gives the impression that Mamoru was casually walking when Usagi threw the test.

However, I do enjoy the manga's storyline so I'm optimistic about this. Can't wait to see
Sailor Venus killing Queen Beryl with a sword
animated!

Well, the comedic stuff is precisely what some are saying they miss the most, and that's what the original anime spent much of its time doing.

The first episode wasn't bad. Don't really like the original voices though. I'd prefer it dubbed in English, like how I watched it when I was a kid.

And the second.

Especially since the four sisters serving Rubeus weren't killed right on the spot, but turned into regular humans. Which they were to begin with.

I saw the first episode over the weekend. Not really sure what to make of it. She show feel cheap and a little lacking in energy. I still don't really like the art style compared to the other cartoon. The new show has a lot stiffer expressions, and characters look a wig-change away from being another character. Usagi's voice actor also feels really out of place. She couldn't sound more like an old person trying to sound young. I looked it up and it supposedly is the same voice actress as before, but that only benefits trivia, and not the show itself.

Not crazy impressed with it thus far, but I'll give it a full season.

That's going to be quite jarring. It was an element I really liked a lot.

Who says they won't do the same again?
No one in the production said there won't be changes to the manga's story, that's just the fandom assuming things.

Naoko Takeuchi herself regretted some things she did in the manga,
killing off Jadeite
early for example, with her being involved in the production I wouldn't be surprised if one of her notes about the Rei episode was
"Don't kill him!"

The Nephrite/Naru love story is another thing I can see them doing again, it was not only a good storyline, it was also very popular with the fans and they said they try to please the older fans too.

I do not see them doing the Naru storyline. It doesn't fit with the flow of the plot at all.

And the second.

Especially since the four sisters serving Rubeus weren't killed right on the spot, but turned into regular humans. Which they were to begin with.

I was gonna make a blanket statement, but
the last sister and the trio do get a tad bit more than the generals.

Girlfriend is a huge Sailor Moon fan. Watched the first episode. Asked her if she liked it. She said "Its okay. Nothing really specia..." and then the 3D stuff happened.

Our reaction : "WTF? She spins arround like a bowling ball. And then this ugly 3D. Even the Berserk Movie had better 3D."

She said that it goes downhill from that. And most of the stuff was cringeworthy.
