Saints Row The Third |OT| Oscar Worthy Gameplay

That's the other weird thing, not even a regular one showed up! Whatever. I got enough money to be invulnerable to bullets, explosions and fire so I'm okay. Just so weird that I will still die in one blast if I am inside a car when it explodes.

I maxed out all upgrades about 2/3rs of the way through the story and before I bothered with a lot of the activities - it made finishing all of those a TON easier, obviously.

Without paying much attention to it I still managed to go all godmode a couple of hours after finishing it, thankfully, lending the final stretch leading up to the ending some appreciated urgency. With blinding power in my pocket (too much for one man, as it were) I did proceed to finish up the snatch missions, however, which are probably the only bummer-esque thing about the game. I can't say for sure that it bothers me gameplay wise or if I'm just a bit put off thematically by this... sorta this remnant from a pimpier, ho-ier aspect of Saints Row that I never really gelled with.

That doesn't happen to me I have full health upgrades in everything. It doesn't even kill my brother and he has none of those no damage upgrades. I do still take damage when I get hit by a car though which is weird.

One of the assassination missions was frustrating me, I had to find an ugly ho and hold her hostage. But she never spawned! Only the regular ugly fat non-hos kept appearing. Eventually after 30 minutes of running around I moved on. Hopefully next time I attempt it they will give me the damn right person for me to hold up.

They're around the Image as Designed store. Try to do that contract when it's nighttime, they seem to spawn more often then.

I just grabbed a normal ho and it seemed to work.
Moments like these - brought to you by Saints Row.

During SR2 co-op, a friend and I were playing the game and we kept messing up the escort missions. In walk both of our wives as he proclaims "Remember, kill the pimp first!" Felt like I needed to put it on a t-shirt or something.

Pretty game.

I've been meaning to ask; is there a mod or a way to set up Saints Row 2 on PC to play more like 3? Can you freely map the aiming controls to the shoulder button and make it hold instead of toggle, for instance?

Finished the game. That final mission is definitely something, although as someone pointed out, the fact that it was like the final fight in a certain other PS3 title was a bit annoying. Although as someone who was at level 48 at that point, it didn't really matter all that much.

I'm probably going to wait awhile before finishing up all the side stuff, but man, even in spite of some small problems like awkward checkpoints and triggers not happening, I still had a great time.

I've thrown the variables into a super computer and it's come to the conclusion that there's no way the final fight's similarities to another final fight wasn't intentional. Hence comment on its "convenience".

Well, I mean,
it took me a while to notice the giant lava rocks sitting on the ground. At that point, all I had to do was sit behind one and wait for him to run at me.

I was really afraid that it would have become a drawn out mess like that other game, but it wasn't at all.

Ahh yeah. Yeah, SR3 is surprisingly measured as a game. It gives off a vibe of people knowing what they're doing in terms of gaming fundamentals. It's odd, but decreasingly so in this genre I guess. Open world games don't necessarily amount to six different flavours of wonky in one package anymore.

So there's no way of disabling the text pop-ups? I can't count how many times I've been told about the Upgrade Shop even though I've bought every item available.

Man I must Platinum this before getting swallowed up into Skyrim....christ so close ;-)

Another awesome thing I just noticed today. When doing the Basejumps for Saintsbook I noticed a car driving up to my basejump marker and some homies stepping out, providing me with transportation.

Gameplay streamlining like that makes me appreciate the game so much more. It's also going to be hard going back to GTA without Bo-Duke-En into cars all the time, sofluid.jpeg

Not only crossfire. Ran pretty smooth on my 6970, now it's worse, especially when driving it goes into the 30s.
Not surprised. I just hate how this is one of those AMD "Gaming Evolved" games yet the ATI support on it is dead-set atrocious. Whereas before I could occasionally get up to 60fps with it sitting more often than not at 30 (with the odd dip to 20) now I struggle to keep a constant 30. Even indoors when I used to get 60fps vsynced no problem, it will bounce between 30 and 60 rather erratically.

Ugh, this kind of shit frustrates the hell out of me. Especially when there was this news a month or two ago which basically sold me on it:
The PC game also boasts a host of graphical bonuses, including AMD Eyefinity support, DX9, DX10, and DX11 support, Crossfire enabled, SLI enabled, advanced depth of field, reflections, ambient occlusion quality, and God Rays.

Volition concluded: "Saints Row: The Third on PC is not a port, and it's our goal here at Volition to prove that to our PC fans."

Also love that one of the recommended specs for PC was a quad-core CPU, but they advise users to disable two cores if they have issues. Brilliant.

I forced myself to finally finish off the last of the GTA IV Episodes. Then my treat afterwards was to play this. The comparison I made to a friend was GTA is like driving a golf cart with baby giraffe legs instead of wheels and a hamster wheel for an engine, and Saints Row 3 is like stepping into a magic realm of actual fun compared to the cumbersome, terrible foot combat of GTA. It's just effortless. I forced myself through everything in GTA. In SR I sit down and the fun is on autopilot.

I think everything except some of the checkpointing is fairly well considered, which is surprising for an open world game. It's funny how much you're also willing to forgive when you are just being constantly stimulated as well - this game is tremendously easy at least on Normal, but that's alright with me. I don't really want a "challenge" when playing a game like this - just fun!

My friend and I are seriously considering Saints Row 3 but your statement raises a big concern for me. We haven't played Saints Row 2 because it looked quite rough around the edges and that game looked a bit too much like GTA games (we dont like them).

Basically what we're looking for (games in bracket are just an indication, some of the most fun we had in co-op, I know they mostly are from different genres) :

- Top notch gameplay (Uncharted, Ninja Gaiden, Resident Evil 5)
- Good challenge (Demon's Souls, Borderlands, Dead Island)

What we don't care about :

- Over the top humour
- Doing random stuff in an open world (not interested in driving over randoms or running around wearing a dildo on our head)

So would SR3 still be a good purchase for us? Basically we want to know how good the gameplay/gunplay is. If it feels as good/tight as Uncharted, it's fine for us. Same for challenge, something along the lines of Borderlands or Dead Island is fine. Something like Dead Rising is a no-no though.

The only other open world third person shooters we played were GTA4 and Red Dead Redemption. We hated the former one and the latter one offered way too few content in co-op, the gunplay was too rough and there was no challenge. So we're kinda hesitant about this game but it seems to get a lot of praise for its gameplay so we're willing to give it a try. Should we?

Well if you do not like humor and doing fun stuff, which SR3 is all about, then I am not sure you are going to enjoy it. On the other hand, everyone should play Saints Row 3!

You can play it on Hard and don't buy any of the damage reducing upgrades to make the game harder for yourself?

The gameplay is servicable. I will say I enjoyed shooting guns in SR3 much more than in UC3 anyway.

Honestly, the humour is part of the fun, as is just dicking around in an open world that doesn't penalize you for crashing into cop cars, but the individually designed story missions are something to experience. I think every other mission introduces something so new and mindblowing that you will be shocked by the audacity of the game designers. When people say that this game does things that aren't allowed in games, they are right.

You definitely don't have to care about that stuff to enjoy the game. It's a fundamentally very sound shooter underneath, well up to the standard of Uncharted's gunplay and easily beyond Resident Evil 5. The AI dudes are dumber, obviously, but they do a good job of keeping fun enough to gun down.

As was mentioned, the difficulty is entirely up to how much you level up/upgrade before you tackle more missions. Think of that aspect like an RPG; if you grind levels it gets easier, and if you push on sooner it's harder. Also, there's the difficulty setting.

It's definitely not about nail biting challenge though, and no open world game ever really is. They're all somewhat lax for a reason, and that's because there isn't the focus of a neat and tight "video game level" where you're returned to a checkpoint ahead of every challenge. There's a larger momentum at work in an open world game, and it becomes way less about the struggle with individual enemies or tasks, which is why the Ninja Gaiden namedrop is a little bizarre in this context.

It's fun. It's real fun. I don't like to use a "lesser game" as springboard, but your mentioning GTA and RDR as things that make you worry makes it very easy for me to say; don't worry. This game basically has its priorities shifted to a polar opposite of Rockstar's brand of open world stuff.

I'm comfortable saying you should give it a go based on what you're describing. That is provided your "not caring" means literally you don't care either way, as opposed to "if there's a dildo I'm turning it off and setting myself on fire". Because there's a dildo. And it shouldn't stop you.

Pretty game.

Where do you get the black one? All I've got is the white one. This guy here is infinitely more stylish

It's one of the ending unlocks.

Baller as hell. Thanks for the quick response.

Actually, that brings up a question I've got. I'm about halfway through the missions, at
The Ho Boat
.

I realize going forward I've got
some choices to make. Is there a list of items you can get via choice and what you'll miss out on?
I'm just curious as I'd like to end up in the end game with an ideal set of goodies.

Please can someone tell me if theres a part in the middle of the game, or you can unlock it in some way, to make you gang people wholy personalized (as when you make characters) instead of using some preset ones (the ninja, classy outfits...)?

I would love to tear up the streets with my full gang of hand made girls.

I won't spoil the missions themselves, just the choices.
First of all, for the ending, the game gives you a 'hey, if you want to see the other ending, it's still open', so you don't have to choose at all, you just have to play one mission twice.

The game makes you pick between being able to summon zombies and summon Burt Reynolds/SWAT team and a free 'call off cops' phonecall. I don't know how zombies work, because I chose Burt. I think I chose wisely.

During one mission, the game lets you pick 2 out of three items. One's satchel explosives, another's a flying motorcycle and the last is an upgraded tank. I picked the tank, but I cheated to see what the satchel charges are like and think I chose poorly. Of course you take the flying bike, though -- though if you have the game guide (why would you?) that has an Ultor version of the bike as DLC.

In another mission, you get to pick between Killbane's mask and the apocofist. I chose the mask for story reasons, which has a neat effect, but again, I cheated to try out the apocofist and think I chose poorly. Not only do they explode pedestrians, but they send cars flying.

I do wish they'd allow us to buy the not-chosen items post-game end. I have about 1 million dollars on my character with nothing to buy but upgrades for cars (and I already have almost all the cars in my garage).

Please can someone tell me if theres a part in the middle of the game, or you can unlock it in some way, to make you gang people wholy personalized (as when you make characters) instead of using some preset ones (the ninja, classy outfits...)?

Nope.

Thanks for your replies everyone, they really are helpful.

I do agree that it is harder for an open world game to offer a nail biting experience. We just bought Dead Island and we're fine with that kind of difficulty, whilst it's certainly not as tight as say Dark Souls.

And I meant to use Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 as a pretty fun game for us to co-op, solely based on its gameplay. In comparison, even though Dead Rising or Dynasty Warriors offer more co-op content and freedom, the cannon fodder AI and shallow gameplay make them boring pretty fast.

It's fun. It's real fun. I don't like to use a "lesser game" as springboard, but your mentioning GTA and RDR as things that make you worry makes it very easy for me to say; don't worry. This game basically has its priorities shifted to a polar opposite of Rockstar's brand of open world stuff.

Glad to hear this because those games definitely offered too much on the atmosphere/mood side and not enough on the meaty gameplay side for us.

Yes it doesn't bother us but it certainly isn't a game seller either. We're the kind of co-op players mostly interested in the "core" gameplay, we mostly skip cutscenes to get straight to the gameplay parts. It's reassuring to hear that the gunplay is of quality. I also read there's some kind of survival mode in SR3, which is good news since those usually are the best modes in co-op.

Please use it's technical term

Fart In A Jar (FIAJ)

On an unrelated note I have found a pretty efficient way of getting the taunt challenge and achievement after complete map control is achieved, assuming you haven't done the Superbike car theft activity. It gives you a 4-star Deckers rating and you can drive to the nearby gun store and grind some taunts.

Good to know, thank you!

Only question I've further got is
what's upgraded about the tank? New weapons/more armour/different colour?

Thanks for the info though, it's much appreciated!

I think that's it, except tanks are already so indestructible when you're in them that it doesn't really matter. Plus, there's nothing really new about it, while
satchel charges
are completely new in terms of gameplay.

Sorry, it's still like SR2 with presets. There's a bunch of options you can unlock though by fully completing certain activities as well as certain story missions.

I like the mascot/stripper/ninja combo best myself.
