Breaking news: I am downloading this on Steam, can someone please explain to me why Giantbomb are so massively obsessed about this, when Edge gives it a 6. Is it about playing it stoned, as I'd wager that Edge doesn't actually smoke that much dope whereas GB obviously does.

If you know GB's humor, you'd know why they love this so much. They appreciate crazy ass scenarios. It's just fun.

It's the sort of game that you can sit and chill and play for hours without actually doing a mission. I think if you're a professional games journalist who is reviewing this game and not actually just enjoying it but trying to analyse it or just trying to finish it quickly enough to get the review submitted in time it'd be a very different experience.

Edge wants games to be taken seriously so titles like this really don't help their cause. Personally I don't care whether games are taken seriously as art - it's like taking photography seriously as art, some photos are artistic, some are just tacky porn, they both have their place and applications and it's the same with games, they can't all be po-faced and artistic, there's a place for mindless entertainment too.

Saints Row 3 succeeds completely in accomplishing exactly what it's attempting to. It's great fun and thoroughly enjoyable but a serious game it is not.

It don't mix well with the high class gated communities of journalism. It's vulgar, and uncivilized. It's absurd to think such a game is put on the shelves next to such classics as L.A. Noir, or Chess Master 2055 (can't think of a civilized game, what is the world coming to).

lol

OT: Picked this up for $40 a couple days ago. Game is GREAT fun by itself, and even better co-op with a friend. Also looking forward to jumping back into SR2 again.

I finished yesterday and still feel weird about the game as a whole. But fuck it, I had fun.

Amazing how good the writing is for a completely nonsensical clusterfuck of game scenarios.

Pushing deep through SR2(beat SR1 right before) and I am surprised some people are so loud about proclaiming it the better game than 3.

SR2 is basically a polished up SR1. City is a bit more expansive and more detailed, but the same. Much of the bullshit regarding activities in SR1 is cleaned up, but not enough to make any of the old or new stuff that much more engaging(still find them -all- tedious, even if the rewards are great and less frustrating to earn).

SR1 was more of a GTA clone with some slight improvements to the formula. SR2 was the series coming into its own identity, the customization is much greater in SR2, there are far more ways of generating respect than in SR1, many more activities, and a much less serious tone.

Besides, though you may not have liked all the activities, other people did. The city had more variety, pedestrians did more stuff, etc.

The plot missions in SR2 vary from cool to forgetful(like SR1, or classic GTA). I still haven't finished them all granted, been focused mostly on wrapping up all of the activities first, which I am nearly done with. The scant couple I have done in SR3 are vastly superior and memorable to ANYTHING I have seen in SR2 by comparison.

The plot missions of SR2 are more varied than SR3. Usually in SR3, aside from the activity tutorials in the main plot, the game starts you were you need to be, you kill a wave or wave of enemies, then the mission ends. In SR2 if the game gave you a sticky bomb, then there was also a mission which required you to use sticky bombs. Get a katana, you then need to use the katana. In SR3 you get a vehicles and weapons that are kind of pointless to the actual missions. Why couldn't they have made a mission that used the hoverbike in a cool way? There were chase scenes and the boss fights ended in satisfying and brutal ways. SR3 this does not happen.

I can sort of understand the lack of racing challenges in SR3 to be a negative, but they aren't really all that great anyway. SR2 is no Midnight Club, but they are probably the only activity I actively enjoy compared to anything else.

Given that the driving is better and camera set more like a racing game, the fact that most driving through the city is mostly removed/over quickly during missions and no racing activities don't make any sense to me. They made something better then lessened the need to actually use it.

I have been holding off on SR3 progress until I wrap SR2, so I am unsure exactly how the whole of SR3 holds up comparatively. But with 15 hours of SR2 under my belt already, the 2 hours I have played of SR3 has been far superior.

The 15 hours I played of SR3 to me were less fun outside of a couple of really well done missions to the 30 hours I spent with SR2. Different people will have different opinions of the game, but for me it felt like the game was lacking in several of the things I enjoyed of the previous game, and the on disk DLC is pretty f-ed up.

This is not to discourage you from playing Saints Row 3, and hopefully you enjoy and still consider it the superior game after playing it. You didn't understand why someone would think 2 was better than 3, so here you go. 3 improves controls, graphics, etc, but it feels like less of a game to me. Hope that helps.

Installing SR3 on Steam now, really excited to check it out.

Do you guys think it's better played with KB/M or a controller (I have a wired 360 controller)?

I just got it on Friday night and played practically all of Saturday. The intro made laugh out loud; it was one of the funniest things I've seen in a game this year. Totally unexpected. So far
I've offed Philippe and gotten the new supporting characters and done a couple of their missions. Zimos is my favorite so far because of his voice. I was disappointed that Philippe got taken out so early in the game. I thought he was gonna be the ultimate villain. How did he get taken out? All I remember was the ball crashing down and that's it. He didn't get taken out with much fan fare like SR1 and SR2's boss battles. I'm also disappointed that Gat died in second mission; he was definitely my favorite character of the series. At least Pierce is funnier and more likeable in this game.

The driving is definitely better in this game. I do miss Septic Avenger, as well as the Cops activity, and Fight Club. I don't like the Brutes in this game; it reminds me of Crackdown and they're a pain in the ass to kill, but I do appreciate the fact that there's more varieties of cannon fodder enemies in this game. The melee combat also takes a step back in this game, but the takedowns more than make up for it. While I like the RPG elements and it's more over-the-top, it's missing the cartoon zaniness from SR2 (pouring beer to revive your homies in the previous games versus helping them them get up in this game).

I have mixed feelings about this game. I do think it's the better game even though there's less stuff to do and more emphasis on surviving waves of enemies (which sucks). The frame rate stutters every now and then too. I still think SR2 in terms of content is the better game, but in terms of improvements, SR3 takes the cake. I think I still like SR2 a little bit more, but maybe I'll change my mind as I get further into the game.

EDIT: Almost forgot to mention, I was disappointed that the Latino Male character voice didn't return. I thought his VA was really good in SR2. So I picked Troy Baker's voice, despite the fact that he sounds like Nolan North. Also, I'm playing as Claude from GTA3; he fits right into this game.

I'm with you on Zeus Mendoza. His voice really made for an awesome main character and i definitely missed him in this game. I'll cross my fingers for his return in SR4.

Latino Female is still my canonical character of choice. I think it's very impressive how all the voices really 'fit' the game, even if they are off in subtly different ways.

I've been thinking about it a little more, and I think I liked SR2 more. But a lot of that was probably because I didn't expect jack shit from SR2.

I'm having major trouble with the hard trail blazing mission and the hard heli assault mission. The Heli assault is just plain frustrating, I get to the fourth stop and my angles are blocked by the train tracks and I can't shoot the dudes. I've tried flying low enough and all I do is crash :p. Any tips?

As far as the trail blazing mission I think I'll just have to try a bit harder. Since all I'm doing are these missions I want to fucking kill those tiger escorts haha.

There isn't any particular trick here, you just have to slowly edge the chopper forward until you see a gap to shoot through. You can shoot through the gaps in the tracks and through the side of the bridge. Use missiles for splash damage.

Trail blazing is all about destruction and shortcuts. Blow up as many cars and run over as many people as you can before heading to a checkpoint, so long as you have a decent chain going you'll have plenty of time by the end. However, I think a few checkpoints are bugged, or inactive, in that you can drive through them but no time will be added on.

What kind of frames per second are you guys getting on the PC? I'm playing Just Cause 2 and I'm wondering if I'll be getting 60fps also. I know JC2 is an older game, but it looks really good.

Combovers don't work when there is no hair
Picked this up yesterday (also picked up Team Ico Collection and used copies of Darksiders and Heavenly Short) as I'll have to stay at home for about a month due to having had surgery earlier this week. Gave it a quick try yesterday, and the game starts off with the most hilarious TV commercial parody I've seen in a long time, and then just goes insane. So awesome.

So i've had this game for a few days now.

The gun combat is underwhelming there is no fun shooting enemies i have just powered up my machine gun to shoot incendiaries so these gun fights are over more quickly. Hand to hand is a bit more fun. And the brute guys whose smart idea was that? Especially the ones with flame-throwers? Also waves and waves of enemies does not make battling them more fun. Especially with how loose combat is done in this game.

Good stuff: Character movement feels better. the cars while still micro machines feel better to drive but still have no weight to them. The city is still so nondescript i don't think Volition will ever make the game world feel as good as they did in the first game.

I also don't like what they have done to the stores. In the first game you had three tiers of stores. Crummy, mid range and expensive in this, it seems to be all over the place, the great thing about the tiered stores were as you made more money you could afford to shop in those places. Buy expensive rings and jewellery etc.

The stores seem too jumbled up. And lacking in good clothes how much of that stuff will be DLC.?

I think the problem with clothing here is that you start off with too much choice in clothing.

Are they patching in a replay mission deal for the console versions?

I ask because I got done with the decker final mission, and yeah, I would like to replay that.

I don't really want to join the chorus of "eh" but that's how I feel to so far.

I am currently just past the start of
STAG
and do not like where I see this game going if it is going to get away from the gang-on-gang shenanigans. The first few missions of the game were amazing, the plane sequence was delightfully over the top, but I have not had more than a couple of moments since that have matched how great the opening was.

I played SR2 a ton, enjoyed how it so well meshed serious parts
(Carlos)
with a lot of zaniness, and SR3 just seems too much like a continuation of the previous game but without the story hook to keep me going. Maybe this is a "its not you, its me" kind of problem but I have trouble with a game that doesn't have any seriousness to it no matter how small.

Use the Pistol, and upgrade it entirely. The SMG is worthless until it gets the incendiaries, but even then the Pistol is more reliable.

Also, is there a way to get the names of songs on the radio? I like that techno one that starts out with, "31 seconds."

Nope. I heard the lead designer talk about it on a podcast, he said it basically introduced thousands of bugs they'd have to fix and it just wasn't going to be feasible. He said they'd think about making it a priority for the next game.

has the community site been down for the last day or so?

i havent been able to upload or download any characters in the last 24 hrs.

I love the tracks from the K12 radio station. I've been looking up info on some of the artists and Tugboat is giving me trouble. Whenever I google 'Tugboat- Don't Break it' the only results I get are from Saints Row 3. Anyone know if Tugboat has released an album, has a website, anything?

I beat it. Got both endings, About the endings,
I loved the good one because it was pretty light hearted and insane. I wasn't expecting Mars (which deserves props on its own because it's a nod to Red Faction) as the last place. I had a feeling it was a movie because of how exaggerated the characters acted, and the main character screaming "NOOOOOOO!" Which was pretty funny. So good. It's definitely one of my favorite endings this gen.
I didn't like the
bad ending because it was too depressing; it basically turned into the Saints founding their own Outer Heaven. I went for Shaundi the first time because that was how I thought it should end. Especially after choosing to unmask Killbane, I thought there was no point in killing him. It was pretty messed up. Movie stars Saints>City-state Saints. Still though the Daedalus ship was pretty cool, I'll admit.
The devs were pretty sincere in the credits.

I think this game is better after playing through it. The only thing is that this game has more bugs than the previous SR's. The missions kept getting crazier and crazier; so many good ones. I wonder how Volition is gonna be able to top themselves in SR4 after this game. As I said, this is definitely one of the funniest games this year and one of my favorites. Now I'm playing as a female character. I'm surprised there's no co-op achievements in this game at all. Oh and
I dunno the name of the song, but the song that the main character and Pierce sing along with superimposed with all the main character voices was fantastic; that song is pretty catchy. I like it.
Fantastic game even if it was shorter than the previous SR's. I'm looking forward to the next one for sure if it comes out this gen. Oh and the game's original music was pretty damn good I must say; I like the theme song and several other songs such as Professor Genki's song. My favorite new Activity was Tank Mayhem for sure.

K12 was even better in SR2. My favourite non Vice City in game radio station. No clue on Tugboat though.

The song you're looking for is What I Got by Sublime.

Well, life is too short, so love the one you got
'Cause you might get run over or you might get shot

Thank you kindly. Forget Power, I think this song fits the game's theme nicely (well Power's pretty damn good too). It's a pretty good feel-good song.

The Spanish music in this game was pretty good; I liked the fact that there's some Dominican rap in this game. It's still not as varied as GTA IV's Spanish station, but it's good for what it is; hearing Don Omar and Pitbull was good enough. I do miss listening to The Final Countdown and Woman.

Game is still full of surprises. Just finished one of the cellphone missions and was thinking there needs to be gang-stars added for zombies. On *later location spoiler*
zombie island. I was laughing my ass off when zombies started arriving in hearses, ambulances, then zombie brute trucks.

Also finally got 100% completion. Just realized this is going to be my first PS3 platinum trophy since Uncharted 2.

What platform are you playing on? There are 3 co-op achievements on the Steam version, although they're pretty mundane. Play 5 hours of co-op, complete all activities in co-op, and finish all the missions co-op.

PC version here. Pretty happy with the game so far (about half way through I guess). Only technical issue I'm having is the game sometimes freezes but the sound still plays, such as the engine of a car still revs as if it's driving. Anyone know the cause of that?
