Anyone on the Xbox have a save right before the final mission? I need gangstas in space cheevo. Glitch on me and I have to replay the whole game to earn it.

There's no doubt that I'm easy to please sometimes, but I really enjoy the city they built. Sure it doesn't feel real, but it feels like a real random little perpetual motion machine, and there are times when I just love to jog through the city or go base jumping just to admire the skyline. Is the city in SR2 really a lot better? I downloaded it but didn't really play much of it, and I'm just not sharing the meh feelings some are having over Steelport.

I think so. Stilwater is bigger and there are more distinct areas that are very different from one another. I can probably name 20 different areas/locations of the top of my head, in addition there are secret islands and caves all over the place.

That said I think Steelport is fine too and certainly looks a lot better. Best of both worlds would be a city with Stilwater's size and variety and Steelport's visual fidelity.

Snatch missions on hard can suck it. Just get in the car people!

This so much. So many times I'd be on the last person/group to escort back and one of the little shits would just refuse to get into the car, they'd get downed, I go out to get them up, berserker mobs arrive and start charging me. I just resorted to mass explosives to clear an area when stopping to make pick-ups in the end.

That really could be applied to the entirity of the game. It's so much more fun when you've utilised the upgrade system so that you don't actually have to worry about, you know, being hurt.

That sounds boring and is why I've chosen to only buy the first round of damage reduction upgrades.

I don't know. I found Saint's Row's combat pretty boring whatever way you play it and chose to basically just mitigate the entire thing, at least the frustrating elements of it.

It's the same problem I have with pretty much every third-person open-world shooter. The controls are just too awkward to make it an exciting tactical experience. It's duck between a crate and shoot guys if you don't have damage soaking. At least with the upgrades you can just run around like crazy while you're shooting stuff.

I don't really find the act of running around and shooting guys all that interesting, it's more emergent stuff like hijacking cars mid-combat and trying to run as many people over as possible with them/use them as mobile bombs that's more interesting to me.

that's what made red faction guerrilla so damn good. If there's plenty of other toys in the sandbox, I'd rather use those instead of just running around shooting guns.

Personally I liked the combat. It's pretty easy to avoid most damage by crouching behind something, and you can usually fire over most objects you can hide behind. I used to basically try to have a rolling street war going all the time, where every time I stopped I'd have to swing the car around to make sure I got out on the side which wasn't being showered with bullets. Made things more fun.

I just accept that I will need to get out of the car at each stop, shoot a few people while their animation plays, then drive back and forth in small spurts a few times before they get in the car.

I agree with most of this post. I have wanted a good open world tactically strong game for ages now. First person if need be, with a robust cover system, AI, and tactical options.

I also want more variety in the tools available in the over the top style of games like SR.

People tell me Far Cry 2 might fit the first bit, but I don't know.

I don't really understand the complaints myself. For the kind of game it is, I think the combat is perfect.

Oh sure, I'm not disputing that, and I'm thankful you can use the upgrade system to essentially mitigate the entire thing. I just think, you know, it could be better.

What platform are you playing on? There are 3 co-op achievements on the Steam version, although they're pretty mundane. Play 5 hours of co-op, complete all activities in co-op, and finish all the missions co-op.

360 version. I would have preferred some kind of encouragement to play co-op. Maybe the activities, particularly Escort on Hard which I hate, need to be done on co-op.

FC2 was many things. Tactically designed is not one of them. Good in any way is also not one of them, sadly.

Can't really agree with this- though I can certainly understand not thinking it was good, tactically designed is kind of exactly how I'd describe its approach to combat. Approaching any situation like a madman and you'd get your ass handed to you, whereas there were almost always multiple approaches that would be a viable way through any firefight. It was impressive, though the game was burdensome in a number of other ways.

In that sense, yeah, you are right. But that was just a difficulty factor to me. The perfect vision, and hearing of the bad guys ruined any sense of tactical depth. The rapid respawn did not help either. It was a twitch shooter in an open world. To me anyway. It had massive potential, I was so disappointed with how it turned out.

I hated the combat at first, but fully upgraded, dual wield pistols with explosive rounds makes the combat awesome.

Why are all my uploaded characters gone?

Edit: Just checked the website, seems to be an error but they are not lost, just not available.

I started a new playthrough last night. Dude this time, with a zombie voice. I'm really enjoying it now I can Min/Max my way through the upgrades and perks. I just fancied playing the campaign again at first, but now I can see me doing everything again. It's so much fun.

What's this I hear? Someone talking ab*VROOOOOOOM*

Fixed.

ow man this game! :D just pasted the 17 hour mark on the game and I'm just getting started :D
on the story side I only did the first island part and just got my first mission for the guy with the autotune voice.

I do. If you know how to resign it with your IDs I could upload it for you.

Just got this game for the 360, have only completed the first 2 missions. Any warnings, words of wisdom before I strap it on?

I think they will go for that in SR4. Steelport seems to be a starter city, in ways.

If your going for a lot of achievements/whatever make sure you do the gang taunting/compliment/specialists challenges early on as the gangs get thinner and harder to find near endgame.

I loved Zombie duet with Pierce in that beginning mission. I was laughing my ass off. It was even better than the drunken chorus car ride in Mafia II.

Is it generally agreed upon that this game gives a terrible first impression? I played up until just past the part in which you fall out of a plane, and I really dislike the shooting and the game's overall aesthetic. Should I stick with it or just sell it?

I had some difficulty getting into the game also. I had to severely up the sensitivity, especially vertical, to get the aiming to feel right. Plus the guns are kinda weak sounding and the game runs like shit on the 360.

Sell it. If you're not enjoying the shooting and aesthetic at that point you're not going to enjoy the game much since it's 90% combat and stylishness.

No, it's not generally agreed upon. If you have to come in here to ask whether or not to sell it, you already know your answer. Don't play a game you do not enjoy.

Fair enough, and thanks to everyone who provided feedback. I was ready to love this game, too. Bummer.
