Sakurai on DLC: “It’s All About Making Players Happy”

These days, the “DLC scam” has become quite the epidemic, charging customers extra money to complete what was essentially an unfinished product. I completely understand how aggravated players must feel. After all, a game should be 100% at the time of release, and I would be livid if it were split up and sold in pieces.

Banjo-Kazooie is a weird fetish request right next to Geno. It really isn't sensible or overly productive for Nintendo to invest in.

Woa! It may not be overly productive, but Banjo was one of the big faces of Nintendo for someone growing up with the N64! I was never able to pick up the games as a kid, but boy does banjo still tug a nostalgia string.

He and K.Rool would be solid characters to represent '90s Nintendo!

I'm so happy to hear him talking like this. He deserves a nice break, but it's nice that a smaller more manageable workload has his outlook improving. He's a world class guy and developer.

I'm so glad Smash is getting DLC. I've been hoping for Smash expansion packs since Melee. It's so exciting that now it's finally happening.

I'm more interested in getting more stages and hopefully alt costumes than new characters.

alt costume is unlikely at the point for now, but we are more likely to get more mii costumes and stages since some people found the codes that we are getting more stages! :)

Yeah, it's more manageable team for him so he don't have overload his work that much anymore (hopefully) I'm happy for him.

OH sweet on the stages!

Anyone actually believing they aren't releasing this shit simply for monetary gain is delusional.

There is such a thing as wanting to make a living and providing fun/worthwhile content for people.

Considering Sakurai's obsession with trying to make games that suit his vision, often to the detriment to his health I can't really pretend like he's some guy who doesn't actually care about making high quality & fun games, sometimes even at his own (mostly physical and mental) expense.

Nothing about that implies that he's not also interested in making the games & content he provides profitable at the same time.

Don't care. Not comparing it to those, because I don't buy those either. A single character extra character out of 50+ for £4.50 is not something I'm interested in buying, ever. Not when other games are adding content equal to 50% or more of the base game for ~£13 in several of Nintendos other DLC offerings.

It's just not good value for money. And I absolutely refuse to believe a single smash character (and veterans at that) costs anywhere near that much to develop.

edit: To make a point, the skullgirls people reckoned it cost ~$250k to make a new character for their game.
http://www.siliconera.com/2013/02/25...ly-is-cheaper/

Now, unlike skullgirls, Smash bros has sold nearly 10 million copies over the two versions.
If it costs in the ballpark of $250k, then the idea that charging $5 each is ridiculous. That would mean they need to sell 50k to break even. That's around a 0.5% sellthrough rate. I'm pretty darn sure Nintendo isn't anticipating anywhere near that low, so it's certainly not a cost issue.

I also suspect a character for smash is significantly cheaper than skullgirls, though I can't prove that.

I just honestly think they've made a mistake pricing it so high. I reckon they would have easily gotten more than double the sales at half the price, or with a good season pass, £13 for the 6 new characters (including codes for both versions) would have been a pretty easy sell, so they're losing out.

Money earned doesn't invalidate the effort a post-release character has.

But i thought It was only about making players happy and not to make money to pay their employees?

(I just hate that PR bullshit, I'm sorry. They want to make as money as possible; end of story)

The two aren't mutually exclusive though.

Ivysaur. I don't care about already enough Gen 1 representation, I don't care about bullshit "Oh yeah his team makes sense because you can catch them all in X and Y!" conspiracy theories, I don't care what ugly Gen 6 abomination you think deserves to be in.

Number 2 baby.

And Hatsune Miku? Keep it to your full size body pillows fellas.

While I like Ivysaur out of Trainer's team, Tyrantrum > your favorite Pokemon and there's no refuting that!

With that said, Miku isn't like that you silly person. She's not even an anime girl! That's like saying Pokemon are for furries!

Lucas was developed only after finishing the game?

Give me a break, that's being more than a little bit loose with the definition of 'develop'. I thought clones were there because they easily pad out the roster. Porting a clone has require even less effort than that.

MK8, however, does an amazing job with DLC.

Yeah no. They actually redid all of the returning characters, and Brawl "clones" (and clones) actually have their own unique animations. Can't say the same for Lucina and Dark Pit, which is why people are disappointed on them.

I'm sorry, but you don't know what you're talking about.

A 3D Model costs way more (3-4 times the amount) of the 2D Art that is Skullgirls of the $200,000-$250,000 amount to make a character. Even 2D Sprites cost a lot more than a 3D Model because of the amount time that gets put into them.

I don't know the exact quote was, but a Capcom employee responded to the pricing of the Skullgirls characters with: "With $250,000 we could give you a leg."

$4 for a character is very reasonable, and fair. Considering all the work that gets put into it. It's not just about making a character either. You have to think of balancing they have to do among the 50+ characters. An extra dollar gives you the character for both versions.

You know the average price for a character is $5? Most fighters have them at that price. But then you have others like BlazBlue where the characters are what, $7? Yeah, I don't think there should be much complaining.

You also can't compare the DLC to like MK8/HW. Those are two different genres! They work differently.

The difference is that King K. Rool actually has a chance to be in Smash. Banjo is a pipe-dream at best.

See my second reply. I'm just so fed up with all that PR bullshit.

Anyone actually believing they aren't releasing this shit simply for monetary gain is delusional.

Then I guess you don't know how Sakurai develops games or anything about his involvement with Smash, because he really does go all out for fans.
