You know it must be hard as hell to get a lead role in Hollywood if you're Asian when roles that are made for you end up going to white people. Akira's rumored to be all white as well.
They won't have Japanese names or be in a Japanese setting working for the Japanese government in this version of the story. It will have been adapted to a US setting (I don't think we have total confirmation of this but it's extremely probable). Take some steps back here. There is more going on than "Asians are being replaced by white people". You have to consider whether the idea of taking a foreign story and transposing its setting is ever appropriate. And in your answer, please consider the vast array of films that are remakes of foreign films that do transpose their setting, not only in the context of Hollywood, but also of foreign remakes of American films, or Indian films derived from British stage plays set in Italy, or innumerable other combinations.
gits is the only anime that touched my soul, both movie and series.
don't fuck this up.
I wonder if GiTS's philosophical/social/cyberpunk musings are Japanese-government/politics specific or if they're universal enough to transition to a western setting with ease. I mean, the fact that GiTS is well-known and relatively popular to a western audience probably means it will be okay, but... man, I dunno.

Somehow I don't think they'll even go into that political thriller stuff that much.
They needed Russo bros to direct this.
Faora from MoS.other westsern women who might be more appropriate for the role.
If you say so. I was just trying to explain what I was arguingThis is some splitting hairs nonsense just to justify hollywood racism.
I like her in Pacific Rim, but at the moment her English has more accent than Ken Watanabe's

The film should be in Japanese.
Then a Japanese production company should've gotten the rights to it.

She is a really terrible in Pacific Rim.
Did not know that. ImpressiveShe learned English while the movie was being shot, so its actually pretty amazing when you think about it.
As a long time fine with the series, I'm fine with this.
The film as a whole still has me concerned.
Why didn't any Japanese company made a movie of GitS? It would be miles better than a Hollywood crap and make millions.

How much did Rurouni Kenshin and Death Note make? Considering the popularity of the originals, they would be the best comparison to Ghost in the Shell. Why didn't any Japanese company made a movie of GitS? It would be miles better than a Hollywood crap and make millions.

Has there even been many Japanese made live action adaptations of anime, manga, etc that are on par with the source material?

I've never read All you Need is Kill, but I liked Edge of tomorrow. *shrugs*

Edge of Tomorrow is not made in Japan tho.
Maybe Kenshin?
l love that movie, but it feels inferior to both book and manga.Battle Royale.
The Kenshin movies are probably the best. It keeps the flavor of the source material while doing its own thing still. In some regards, better than the source material. There are some issues with it but it's to be expected with the budget and the nature of the series.
Alright yeah that was good, I couldn't think of any off the top of my head that I enjoyed much. The Rurouni Kenshin movies are probably the closest. They're actually pretty good
The Umizaru movies are pretty good too.
Umizaru generally lends itself to live action though. The more fantastical ones are the ones folks are thinking of, especially because we're talking about one like GITS.
The live action Patlabor shows are pretty decent.

Wow there is live action?
Haven't seen any Patlabor yet but have had it on my to do list for a while now.
God she's going to do that "tilt head down and look up menacingly" move and I'll cringe and start to cry. I hate you all.
She'll do it while doing a 3 point landing and you'll like it.
