ScarJo takes lead role in GHOST IN THE SHELL

i like scarjo but she is wrong for this.
also I don't really want a western adaption(same goes for akira)... but whatever.
 
Whitewashing is eh but Hollywood will be Hollywood i suppose. Totally down for ScarJo with purple hair and cybernetic augmentations, nonetheless, actually kinda excited, hope it follows the Edge of Tomorrow/Speed Racer levels of care with handling a foreign property like this. Hoping the visuals are top notch as possible, GITS always had a gorgeous looking settings. Maybe this will convince James Cameron to hurry up on Avtars 2-50 so we can get the Battle Angel movie out.

I love GITS and I think ScarJo could be good, but I must agree this should've gone to a somewhat ethnically Japanese woman. Unless its animated, it just wont look / feel / seem right.

I wonder if GiTS's philosophical/social/cyberpunk musings are Japanese-government/politics specific or if they're universal enough to transition to a western setting with ease. I mean, the fact that GiTS is well-known and relatively popular to a western audience probably means it will be okay, but... man, I dunno.

Somehow I don't think they'll even go into that political thriller stuff that much.

They needed Russo bros to direct this.

Okay, to be fair, I actually do think GitS could survive the transition to a western setting intact. The 1995 movie puts relatively little emphasis on the actual geographic location of its setting. I think it only actually mentions its setting by name like, once. The general philosophical themes are pretty much universal. The political stuff can be adjusted or at least rewritten into something similarly interesting dealing with US policy. I could maybe imagine it being about US anti-terrorism or cyber security policy in a cyberpunk world.

The real reason the casting get's to me is just because it feels like typical Hollywood big-name casting. I think there was another recent thread on this very subject that tried to come up with other westsern women who might be more appropriate for the role.

This is another reason I'm afraid. Even if they do go the political thriller route, it could very easily turn into, well, typical Hollywood portrayals of politics in action movies.

If they just made a appleseed movie race wouldn't be a problem. Briarios has to stay black though. It'd be horrible regardless.
 
Guys, there are other asian actresses besides Rinko. You don't have to just go with the only one you know of just because. In fact, they don't necessarily need to go with a well known one at that

Well, I guess if she's asian they might have to. Only white actors get the benefit of not being considered risky despite being unknown and not really being able to act *coughSamWorthingtoncoughJaiCourtnecough*

I think Chris Rock put it best when talking about race relations when he says racism will be (for the most part) a thing of the past when when minorities are able to fail or be bad at things

If that was the case, I'm sure some company in Japan would've gotten it done by now. Sometimes things don't always work like that.

Perhaps it's worth giving this a shot. Spielberg REALLY loves GiTS. This has been known for ages, so maybe it'll be good with him having personal investment in it.

Japan just doesn't have the money. I think the biggest budget a Japanese movie had was something like 20 million (and I want to say that was Battle Royale 2). They could handle something small scale but to compete with the big Hollywood blockbuster they need those investors. And could they get those investors for a PG-13 GITS movie shot in Japanese? Maybe. But could they turn a profit? That's up in the air.

Better to let another studio handle it.
 
No, a Japanese made live actions GITS would be horrible because their standards of acting are, ironically, far below that of certain auteur anime.

How much did Rurouni Kenshin and Death Note make? Considering the popularity of the originals, they would be the best comparison to Ghost in the Shell.

IMDB shows for Death Note a budget of 20 million and 25 million for Kenshin. Both films debuted at #1 in Japan and made double their budget back. That's not considered to be great. In order for a film to turn a profit it has to make three times its budget back. That's how it works. Usually they make significantly less the longer it's out in theaters because of the arrangements made with the theater owners, it may vary in Japan but in America there's something like a 90/10 split for the Studios and the theater chains on the first weekend. On every additional weekend the split is more like 60/40 and 40/60 and so on. That's why the opening weekend is so important and why popcorn and soda is so fucking expensive.

Now when you factor video and on demand and all that it gets fuzzy. Studios rarely ever share how much a film makes on video and it's possible that through video sales they can turn a profit but the chances aren't as great.

So, could GITS be made in Japan with a budget of about 30 million? Yeah, probably. It would probably look like that live action Aeon Flux movie (which had a budget of about 50-60 million and shot in Canada) but would it be profitable for them? Would it have international appeal? Do they have a star to carry it?

Makes more sense for Production I.G. to license it out to Dreamworks and let them take the risk and get a cut of the profits.
 
The Kenshin movies are probably the best. It keeps the flavor of the source material while doing its own thing still. In some regards, better than the source material. There are some issues with it but it's to be expected with the budget and the nature of the series.
 
I'm so cautiously optimistic...!!!

But seriously, this is one of those rare series I think is potentially a GREAT to adapt so I really hope it gets justice done to it. It feels....sorta relevant to the current film/entertainment climate.

The Lupin 3rd movie I saw last summer was fun. Kitamura did a good job by blending the source material with his own thing.

My only annoyance was every non-Japanese actor was dubbed over in Japanese. Even actors who were not dubbed over in promotional materials were in the actual film.
