It has remained a tantalising mystery for thousands of years, but now a U.S. led research team believes it has found the legendary lost city of Atlantis. They claim to have pinpointed the exact location of the metropolis under mud flats in southern Spain. The team of archaeologists and geologists are convinced that Atlantis -swamped by a tsunami - is submerged just north of Cadiz.

Professor Richard Freund of the University of Hartford, Connecticut, who lead the international team, said: 'This is the power of tsunamis.

'It is just so hard to understand that it can wipe out 60 miles inland, and that's pretty much what we're talking about.'

The team used a satellite photo of a suspected submerged city to find the site then surveyed it with a combination of deep-ground radar, digital mapping, and underwater technology. Buried in the vast marshlands of the Dona Ana Park they found a strange series of 'memorial cities,' built in Atlantis' image by the refugees who fled the destructive tsunami. Atlantis residents who did not die built new cities inland, claimed Freund.

The team's findings will be unveiled on Sunday in 'Finding Atlantis,' a new National Geographic Channel special.

Freund said the 'twist' of finding the memorial cities makes him confident Atlantis was buried in the mud flats.

He said: 'We found something that no one else has ever seen before, which gives it a layer of credibility, especially for archaeology, that makes a lot more sense.'

Greek philosopher Plato wrote about Atlantis some 2,600 years ago, describing it as 'an island situated in front of the straits called the Pillars of Hercules.'

Location sounds right, source sounds lol

I really hope we get to see footage or images of their findings soon!

I doubt it being the fabled Atlantis, but things like this are always really cool to see what they dig up. Here's hoping to Atlantis, though!

Dailyfail as a source? Hmm, not sure if want.

EDIT: Just saw the other source. If this is legit, it's going to be an interesting year.

There is almost zero logic to have some island out in the middle of the Atlantic be Atlantis.

It would have no contact with any of the great civilizations of the near east, which then would feed into the 'alien civilization' theories.

I know the nutters will cling on to anything as proof, but the source of the Atlantis myth has already by pinned down by archeologists and it is a real place, with REAL archeology. Not speculative ones based on radar images.

It is the island of Thera in the Aegean sea, a small island north of Crete, and its fate was tied to the decline and fall of Minoan civilization.

BBC ran a documentary on it. It's pretty amazing stuff. Far more interesting than myths of a sunken city with perfect Greek columns and statues

Uh huh. I have my doubts about discoveries that are revealed on TV shows.

Funnily enough, I know about one of the companies that provided technical expertise for this documentary. I don't know how they're involved, but we're not talking about cranks here. Let's just say they're not scrubs.

Finding out that Atlantis was (say) an ancient Phoenician colony would be interesting.

To be clear, this "Atlantis" would be buried under mudflats on the Spanish coast, not somewhere a few hundred kilometres out into the Atlantic Ocean.

@Deku: If the "Atlanteans" were a sea-faring people (like the Phoenicians), they could very well have lived on (or just off) the coast of Spain while still having contact with the nascent mediterranean civilisations.

This could just as well be a red herring, but it isn't impossible. Places we thought were just legendary have turned out to be real before (eg. Troy)

Spain would be barbarian country at that time. Thera thrived a thousand years before the Greek golden age, which in turn arrived long before Rome and the conquest of Spain.

As for your Phoenician colony theory, the Phoenicians did settle as far west as Spain, it wouldn't make much sense that subsequent Phoenician settlements would not have a memory of this. The most successful Phoenician colony in written history is Carthage.

Thera seems like a better fit. And it would explain the rise and fall of the Minoans, which is geographically closer to Tyre, and the other near east civilizations (Hitties and Egypt) and most importantly, it is close to the Greek mainland.

Plato is a Greek writing about Atlantis. To the greek world, Spain was at the ends of the world, not its centre.

RE: knowing company who provided expertise for documentary - are you talking about the link I gave?

Pretty neat stuff! It would be cooler if it was at the bottom of the ocean rather than under some mud flats but I guess you can't have everything.

Better known as Santorini, a great place for honey mooners! Went there last year, nice but highly touristic island.

Maybe the sacking of Carthage overwhelmed the earlier legend or relegated it to the mists of time? Also, I don't know how much we actually know about Carthage's history, religion, culture or mythology at the time of the Punic Wars that isn't from Roman sources. Maybe they did have a historical or mythical record of Atlantis, but it's been lost.

Nope. I knew about this particular team being featured in the documentary completely independently of this thread. I just didn't pay any attention because I didn't know that anybody had claimed they'd actually found something.

All of the documentaries I've ever seen always start with them looking for something like Atlantis, and then come up with nothing at the end. TBH, if they had found Atlantis, we would know about it by now. It would probably have been in every newspaper had this been real. This is probably all just speculation with no real evidence.

You're right, Rome wiped out Carthaginian history.

I'm still highly skeptical of this claim. Claims of Atlantis being found come quite often. I'll keep an open mind for when we get archeological evidence and not speculative stuff.

At the moment, I'm firmly in the Thera camp. Watch the documentary I linked, still a haunting find (especially given recent events) even if you don't agree with the presenter's conclusions.

You make a good point. I'll watch the link you gave tonight when I get home.
