tl;dr: Hannity had three American couples on his show to share their "horror stories" about ObamaCare and how they are suffering under the new law. Salon reporter decides to do his own follow-up, calls each of the families, discovers that their stories were based on ignorance and fear of the new law; none of them had even tried to enroll or research their options. The reporter put their information into healthcare.gov and found that all of them would be better off under ACA.

When the likes of Hannity and Fox News spread fear and misinformation about healthcare options, aren't they actively endangering people's health? Disgusting.

There are plenty of rational critiques of Obamacare so I don't understand why Fox even has to resort to this sort of garbage in the first place.

This is like Joe the Plumber who couldn't take over the plumbing business because of the marxist government share-the-wealth.

I talked to someone who had some good ideas that should be in Obamacare. Turns out all of them actually were in Obamacare. This person is not a right-wing crazy and not uninformed. It's just that there is so much noise out there about the PPACA that the truth of the matter is not getting through.

This is where the IT failures is really hurting things. This is the time when people should be logging on and looking at reality instead of Hannity-Rush-Cruz scare stories. That's not happening because the gubment can't build a website.

In the extreme right's worldview, the American healthcare system is the best in the world and admitting that it needs changing at all is admitting defeat.

They've backed themselves into the corner of disavowing their own ideas (the ACA's ideas were touted by the Heritage Foundation and GOP as the alternative to universal healthcare under Clinton), so now they're left to criticize Obamacare relentlessly and put forth bullshit token ideas like "tort reform" that are nothing other than thinly-veiled corporate welfare.

Fox is entertainment - they have to appeal to a specific audience. They produce news that confirms and reinforces what its watchers already believe.

I know this sounds silly, but what are the repercussions of reporting a false story on a News Program? I know NPR mentions the goofs they make on the previous airings. Do TV programs do the same?

Its extremely difficult to punish speech in the US, particularly in the media.

Pretty sure Fox News isn't exactly listed as an official news source but I could be wrong.

I seriously can't believe that there are people out there that believe this crap! It just shows how stupid people in America can be, and how they don't research anything for themselves. They just believe whatever they hear.

Fox News does it all the time. As long as their audience believes them to be true, there are no repercussions to the channel itself, only more ratings since they can convince their audience that only they have the truth and that the other news sources are biased.

However, other news sources won't be able to get away with it as easily, since they don't have a cult-like following like the GOP does.

Yes. But what is really interesting is that nothing is ever going to happen to liars such as this. No one will do any thing about it because of some skewed interpretation of the "freedom of the press". Apparently, in some countries, lies are covered under constitutional means.

I'm surprised the Salon reporter was able to get through on HealthCare.gov.

(I'm sorry. It's truly horrifying how the vitriol has blinded people towards their options. I actually think one of the nice things about State Exchanges are that they're removed from the specter of Obamacare and people might actually use them, not knowing they're related to the Marxist Benghazi-Denying Law)

Hannity's show isn't a news program, he's commentary. He can do whatever he wants with no repercussions. If Brian Williams did this, he'd be fired and NBC would have to make all sorts of apologies and probably be open to a lawsuit.

Wasn't there a court case a while ago that decided that news stations don't actually have to provide facts? It was pretty shocking but I think that's what helps Fox do what they do.

This should be spread more, and directly challenged by the administration. It's perhaps the most blatant example of pure bullshit in some time.

Strikes me as a good way for the administration to change the subject from the exchange website not working.

This article is great. Everything about this shutdown/healthcare "debate" has seemed like a prolonged argument between a parent and their petulant toddlers.

2/3rds of this guest panel are basically acting like "YUCK. NOODLES? I DON'T LIKE NOODLES. I ONLY LIKE HAMBURGERS. NOODLES ARE GROSS."

And then they try the noodles after a bunch of crying and whining about what they want, and they realize they fucking like noodles, because noodles are delicious.

Man, that just sounds mean. I try to avoid cable news programs (except Anthony Bourdain). If those guys really want to support their party, they shouldn't run these kinds of stories. Its tough enough to weed fact from fiction.

Fox went to court to say they didn't have to tell the truth.

They won too.

As for this, Fox will do as they always does.

Hannity Guest said:
She told me she has long opposed Obamacare, and that the president should have focused on tort reform as a solution to bringing down the price of healthcare

Holy shit these people...

It's like instead of unpeeling the layers of an onion, they're making their own onion consisting of pure bullshit.

Could you or someone else explain what those drawbacks are? I know my family is saving a ton of money because of obamacare.

There probably aren't any, good news papers and shows make retractions of their own will. You should also note that Hannity, O'Reily and some such are not news, they are opinion shows.

The hell? How could they win? First they call themselves "Fox NEWS" and then they just say they provide opinions instead? Why didnt the judge just order them to change their network name to "Fox Opinions" so to not give false information to the viewers? Did they bribe the jury?

Who coined the term Obamacare anyway? It can't be good for Republicans if it turns out the ACA becomes a resounding success that is forever linked to Obama and the Democrats.

I think that's their biggest fear of the act. Kinda funny them coining the term Obamacare to try and demonize it might come and bite them in the ass.

I have had very in depth, serious discussions with some Republican friends of mine. I live in North Carolina and even though I'm in Charlotte, it still leans to the right. For most of them, they're paying more through ObamaCare than they did previously and that's really all there is to it for them. And I can understand that really.

How's that Obamacare doing?

Last I heard, more people have successfully signed up to live on Mars than have signed up for Obamacare.

That website cost $200 million too. And it just doesn't work :/ The CA one is even worse, last time I tried that I ran into an untrusted SSL cert after clicking on the main link on the first page. Way to go guys...

This is one of the main reasons I want limited government. They just can't run things right if their lives depended on it.

Y'all are a bunch of brainwashed liberals anyway. Why would I trust yer lies and not the most fair and balanced news program in America?

I don't see how you can jump to the conclusion because the website is not working that limited government will make it better. How does that work exactly? Do private companies not run into problems like too much traffic and bad software intergration all the time?

I'd be curious how much research they actually put into that conclusion. Or are they just assuming like the couples on Hannity did?

Why switch from their current insurance if it does indeed cost more? No one is forced to buy insurance via the exchanges.

I think your right-wing pals are full of it :p

A shitty private company did the work.

There is a reason you have a difference in quality between the CD-i Zelda games and the Nintendo ones.
