It wasn't weird. The 33% off PS+ was a separate SKU on their back end and recognized as a "different" type of PS+. Only the "normal" PS+ was upgrading without needing to be topped off.

Test the market for how much money they will spend. And if the consumers balk you tell customer service to throw away their scripts and math calculations told to callers. And you adjust the system.
