Happy 25th Anniversary to the 1st console I ever owned.=p

And what better way to celebrate by obtaining a Model 1.=O

There's just an amazing amount of ignorance about the Genesis in general. Hell even if they played Revenge of Shinobi that shows more knowledge than many SNES fanboys in those threads.

Nintendo fans are somehow still butthurt over that generation's console war for some reason. I feel like most Sega fans are over it. I have no reason to deny that the SNES was an amazing system. Maybe its reflective of Nintendo's current troubles that people feel like they need additional justification of Nintendo's glory days.

I was totally a Nintendo fanboy and had plenty of the great games on the SNES growing up...didn't get a genesis until my 20s. Genesis is just as great as I was reading about as a kid and there's plenty of awesome music in its games. Sure, I still like Super Castlevania 4's version of Bloody Tears, but that's about all I want to have to do with that game nowadays.

Really, it seems like most of the SNES crowd who chimes in on these discussions on GAF didn't do their own research into games back then, just played what they could get their hands on at the time, and somehow think of that as a representative sampling. I just didn't want to forgo 4 games for the price of a genesis back then, but I had no doubt that there was great stuff on the other side of the fence. SNES getting SF2 as an exclusive helped me stay away as well.

Even though I had several consoles, I was SUCH a huge Sega fan as a kid.

Here you can see my Genesis, right in the front. I think I'm playing Galaga '88 on Turbo-Grafx (lol at the Bally Astrocade):

Christmas '93 (I'm guessing cuz of the Dragonzord), look at the shirt..

Japanese Sonic and Tails plushes... the Sonic actually says "SegaSonic the Hedgehog" on it... so it was made before his name was finalized in Japan.

Happy birthday Genesis!

Andy, you were spoiled rotten! I see an SNES and a Turbografx as well! Is your pic with the NeoGeo not available?!

I kid for the retro envy. Great pics of a great era.

Seeing Andy's pics up there makes me wish I had some from 1992 when I was working as 'official' Sega PR in the Toys R Us gaming aisle. The Sega/Sonic windbreaker I was forced to wear was pretty amazing as I tried to sell people on how amazing the Sega CD was at the time.

I still remember the pitch I used to use for Silpheed - "Ever see the Last Starfighter? Now you can play it."

This man who argued with me to swap out the baseball game included in the Master System sports bundle with 'another game of his choice' since his kid wasn't into sports was great. My coworker says to me "Want me to hold your windbreaker?".

Good times.....Good times.

The only gaming related pic I have laying around somewhere is when my father and I did the Intellivision Astrosmash hi score challenge together back around 1981. We took turns during a marathon 2 hours of that game to get this insane score. hehe

this is so awesome - i thought you meant you were just the fanboy in the aisle hyping stuff up (god i totally did this) for free-like, that sounds crazy though...still got the windbreaker?

^so pimp though

so on my genesis-fest today, i spent a while with Contra; Hard Corps...i know this one comes up, but i still think it's underrated. i mean, multiple characters with varying weapons, multiple paths, and everything ive tried so far has just been badass. the music, the gameplay, all of it - this really is a better game than Contra III, and i fucking love III (also neat that it references the Alien Wars of 5 years gone).

classic pattern-based gameplay & keeps you coming back to just see what awesome shit the next level wants of you. i'm having a hard time thinking of a finer entry in the series.

I remember reading a big Contra retrospective spread across several pages in a gaming magazine. Maybe about ten years ago. Most of that space was dedicated to Contra 3, while Hard Corps was barely even graced with a footnote. Underrated seems about right. Feels like more and more are starting to wise up to how great it really is over the years though. Maybe it's related to Hard Corps Uprising.

excellent video on Sonic 3 & Knuckles, really does show why it's the 2D series' peak

cannot wait for september!

Whoa.

I just 'discovered' an unlicensed hack 'n slash game Shui Hu Feng Yun Zhuan ('Beneath the Clouds' or 'In the Clouds' according to internet)

this is what i get for buying carts & manuals and not a flashcart yet, damn

Wow - 25 years today, what a ride.

I got my Genesis Christmas 1991 with Sonic the Hedgehog. We didn't have a lot of money, so that was the only game I had for a while.

Played some Rocket Knight Adventures tonight in celebration - what a great game. The music is awesome, controls are just right, and the level variety is crazy. I picked this up in the 90s well after it had been released and played it endlessly.

Two of my favorite tracks:

I was on some nostalgia shit tonight. I contend Bare Knuckle III is the best in the series, but I played SOR2 cuz it was my first.

BK3 is super weird but I agree.

The first time I fought the travestites with my brother (we were what, 16?) we almost died because we couldn't stop laughing at the stereotyping

He did a great one for Sega CD where you could select between JP and US music in the video. DId you see that one?

nah, literally just found him cause of a thread on sega-16, sub'd though so i intend to work my way through his videos soon!

It's 11.25$ on ebay. I just submited an 8$ offer that was auto accepted

for real? i'm still shopping around for a modder who does region switches, but if this thing can work with a game genie pass through i might bite!

Definitely watch the other Sonic ones, I can vouch for those! I was waiting for the Sonic 3 and Knuckles one to come out, so thanks for the heads up. Video sums my thoughts perfectly.

The cart is in a japanese shell and every japanese game I have has inserted (and played) fine in both my X'Eye and my Genesis 2

I'm not sure you would need a game genie

more of a varsity jacket tho

Nah, while I kept it for a few years after in a closet, it is long gone now. It was this yellowish zip up windbreaker that was literally made out of cheap tissue paper which had silkscreened images of Sonic and the Sega logo plastered all over it. By the end of the day it was a smelly sweaty mess.

I remember the end of the Sega half of the aisle having the Genesis kiosk that we had set up to demo Aladdin. The thing ran all day and all week and I swear to this day is the reason for my absolute hatred of the game. The big thing that I was given to do towards the end of my tenure was to push preorders for the new Madden 93.

Across the way in the Nintendo half was this cute broad which I had a flirty competitive relationship with that basically did what I did, only she not only used to have access to some nice swag, but didn't need to wear a coat indoors either. We used to see who could get more sales between the two brands and with the swag she would usually have the upper hand. Remember that at the time this was the era of the Toys R Us 'super aisles' and Nintendo and Sega had each half to themselves. Meanwhile the opposite side had the glass case full of the electronics, game systems on display and stuff like the Miracle piano.

Her kiosk was one of those oversized Gameboy CRTs with Link's Awakening on indefinite demo. I used to drool over it every day.

I love Taoplan shooters so I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

How do you end up with just a case+manual? Accidental purchase? My Twin cobra cart was 11$ shipped, so that was cheap enough for me.

few lots i'd picked up in the past, either CL, ebay or garage sales...it's weird, that's the only one cause i sold off my extra inserts/etc last year, i just thought that one looked interesting

I actually own a repro of this, but haven't gotten around to playing it. This is making me consider doing that right now, actually.

tempted to hunt down a repro myself but it's close to $10 shipped, just wondering if i'll need a game genie code or not at this point

Just got home from seein' friends. Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Shenmue showed up! Gonna try out some Jack Herer and don my headphones.

I cheated on SEGA a few times as a kid with the Zelda series, but I was always a Genesis gal. Those Disney games stole hours of my childhood!

I sent an offer of $7 to the Shui Hu Feng Yun Zhuan listing on ebay and the seller accepted. Under $10 shipped. :)

Ugh, I'd be all over this if shipping to Canada wasn't $10+. Shipping normally kills a lot of good deals, though there are some sellers that have free/cheap shipping to the Great White North.

Also, my wife would kill me if I ordered any more retro games, considering I just bought an XRGB mini, and 5 cables, hehe.
