Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Why against your better judgement? It's one of the best controllers ever made alongside the J Saturn controller.

'Cuz, I dunno, there are a lot of things to buy (SCART switches, renew expired PS+, etc) and I only budget myself $120 a month to buy it with?

Actually, it's more because I just kinda took one look at the auction to make sure he didn't list any defects in the description and just pounced on it, not thinking too hard about it. Then again, I got a perfectly good copy of MM8 Saturn for $25 this way, back in 2006...

I thought one model of the NA Saturn controller was good? I don't mean to argue but if J is the best, then I need to keep an eye put.

Love my 1653 controller also.

I did something bad...

I offered a seller around half of what he was trying to sell Alien Soldier for and he accepted...

It still came out to a lot. Now I have to pay it.

Well, I'm supposed to be saving all my money for the Retro Gaming Expo in Portland =[

If I ever see it cheaper than this I'll buy it again and resell it.

JP or euro version? Hope JP for your sake, as the Japanese release runs at 60hz.

Was it complete or cart only? Either way, actually have a physical JP Alien Soldier cart is pretty cool. I dont think i'd ever sell mine. Paid 40 bucks after reward points.

I paid quite a bit more than that for a complete copy in mint condition not that long ago. It will never leave my hands.

haha just spent like 20 minutes furiously cleaning/brassoing/etc a Forgotten Worlds cart because it kept booting right into a game over screen, only to realize it just doesn't like 6-button controllers...i'm dumb

Steel Empire is cool! You can be a Zeppelin and blow-up windmills!

Really enjoying rocket knight. It's amazing how it changes itself up every stage. And the music is terrific. Playing it very loud.

The Mega Drive cleaned up beautifully!
I was surprised when I finally got a look at the motherboard, as it was fairly different looking from the VA2+ pictures I'd seen online looking for reference on the tear down.
No shield, either. Confirms it as a launch window system, though.

God help me now, I've ordered SCART cables and a XRGB-mini, haha.

Rocket Knight feels like such a magnum opus. So far it's surprised every single time I get to a new segment. It's so creative and interesting. One of the most wonderful games I've ever played.

Thinking of picking up forgotten worlds and I really really want to pull the trigger on super fantasy zone but it's like 40 bucks.

I love the level where you have to play based on the reflection of the lava. What an inventive level!

That is next on my list, and I could not agree more.

It's easily my favorite Konami game of the time, having it played it to death when it was new. This at a time when their output was simply incredible.
Still feels somewhat underrated to me, given just how much effort and creativity went into essentially most aspects of the game.
Great design, gorgeous sprite work, an absolutely fantastic soundtrack, and a total blast to play.

I never did give Sparkster much of a shot, but pretty much at a glance it read to me as a massive downgrade to everything that made the original stand out to me.
Recently found out that Akira Yamaoka worked on the soundtrack (at least on Mega Drive), which has at least warmed me up a bit on that aspect.

Both Sparksters (MD and SFC) pale in comparison to the original imho

Super Fantasy Zone is def. worth it. The Japanese MD box art is so cute.

Could have told you that one :)
You need to plug in a 3 button and start a 2-player game to get it to work on a Nomad.

Many people seem to forget that Alien Soldier was also localized for Europe. That one's also pretty expensive though last time I checked.

Does the mode button not do anything for Forgotten Worlds? Then what's the point of it?!

The mode button, when held at start up, makes the 6-button controller operate like a 3-button controller. It's for compatibility issues. Very few games actually use it as a button in-game.

The European version is much less sought after because, unluckily enough, it's one of those rare games that was PAL optimized, meaning it runs at 50 hz.

Not what he was asking. He was asking why Forgotten Worlds fails to run properly even when you hold the button at start-up.

Something about it checking for input too frequently, I've heard. The 3-button controller can keep up pace, but the 6-button controller cannot. For most games, holding the Mode button would suffice, but Forgotten Worlds is... special.

I remembered. It's a bad version.

Also have the Gunstar Treasure Box which includes the J and world versions of the three games included. That's a great collection, especially because of the changes made to Headdy.

I really hope the D-Pad is better than the stock Genesis's, because it's one of my least favorite parts of the controller of late. It just feels so STIFF compared to the SNES or Saturn...

Sounds like you've got a pooey controller on your hands. Most of my Genesis pads have D-pads that are effortless to use: they're "loose," but in a good way, much like a Saturn D-pad. However, there's one of mine that has a D-pad like you described... It's stiff as all hell, and it's a real chore to use!

Hopefully your six-button feels better, right? If you got a good one, the difference should feel like night and day!

You all kept talking about Lunar so I felt obliged to buy it. 100$ and three days (*) later I received my mint copy of Lunar Eternal Blue. Damn the Working Design packaging gets me every time, they really knew how to make boxes and booklet! It stands beautifully next to the other WD boxes (Popful Mail, Albert Odyssey and Magic Knight Rayearth) and will be my next game as soon as I finish MKR.

(*) Three days from Ontario to France with standard shipping, that's faster than it usually takes to cross the Channel. I'm impressed
and still waiting for some USA parcels

yup, turned out i just had to hold it at startup, now no issues - i don't think ive ever had call to use that button before

nah, i wasn't even holding the button before - i too thought it was meant to be used in-game, now i know better! if you hold it at startup there's no issue, i mean other than the fact that the game controls a bit weird to begin with

Got an Everdrive today. Is the PCB on these things supposed to be a bit thicker than that of a normal game? That always concerns me a little.

Funny. Mode doesn't help on Nomad...

I read somewhere that it was less about thickness and more about (lack of) bevelling. You may want to sand your edges a bit so you can have a smoother insertion.

is the Genesis/MD/MD II controller port pins standard across all console iterations? Got a MK-1653-50 that came with a MD II, hoping to pair with a inbound GENESIS HDG.

What are the advantages/disadvantages to playing games from Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, as opposed to on actual Genesis hardware? I recently moved my 360 into the game room with the retro stuff, and it would be more convenient for switching between games (SoR, Sonic, Golden Axe, etc.), but I don't want it at the cost of audio/visual fidelity.
