Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Just played it. Damn that's impressive. It runs between 13 to 18fps but I didn't mind when playing, I found it reasonable. You can see the fps when activating the various graphic modes. These graphic modes could be helpful if the framerate was at 60 but with such low framerate it just makes a terribly ugly, jittering screen (you can't see it properly on youtube)

On the video, when he says the lines would blend together, they don't. Not in RGB anyway. You can also save your game at the end of a level, you have a dozen save slots, just like the original DOS version. You can't name them though. The game is vertically challenged because it's a direct port of the DOS version, which like everything DOS didn't run at 320×240 but instead at 320×200 (but still in 4:3 on VGA screens, with rectangle pixels)

I think u mean Granada

I guess we're not talking about complete copies.

Crusader is 150$ cart only, complete copies are way beyond that price. Which is why PAL or NTSC-J versions are a better alternative (Ragnacenty is completely playable in Japanese, the game is prety easy).

Complete Japanese copies are less than 25$ shipped.

I wonder why ID never tried to port Wolfenstein to the Genesis?

Wolf3D was already old at the time, when the 16bits were around everybody were talking how cool Doom and Duke Nukem 3D were. No one would have bought an ugly ancient computer game when there was much better in the genre, regardless of the technical achievement it would have been. In the end it was all about fun, and good old wolf3D wasn't anymore.

Err

Wolf3D came out 3 years after the Genesis was released and 2 years after the SNES was. There's also an SNES version of Wolfenstein 3D.

As for Doom, it came out at the end of the 16 bit generation, a little less than a year before the PSone and Saturn came out.

.

Yeah, I even read in Masters of Doom that Carmack himself programmed Doom for the SNES. So I can only guess that maybe Nintendo offered ID more money than Sega?

I'm not sure why you expected it to work in RGB. The vertical line-blending trick was always intended for lesser video signals like composite or RF, where it actually works.

So... Everdrive V3 or Mega Everdrive? Stone Age Gamer don't seem to have a bare board of the Mega Everdrive so I'm leaning towards the V3...

I'm aware of that, I was just commenting on the video. Especially since he tried with the terribly ugly "TV mode" in Kega Fusion.

isnt' the mega everdrive the Superior one? I know Irish ordered one recently but not sure if he's gotten it yet, may want to see if he pipes in. Also you can order it directly from the guy who designed it.

Yeh, I just can't grasp why it costs so much more (unlike with the SD2SNES where I understand about the enhancement chips and such). I thought someone here might know. I browsed Retrogate a bit, but they only do a cheapo $5 shipping option and that worries me.

Edit: Looks like the Mega Everdrive bare board is back on Stone Age Gamer.

there's good comparisons out, but the mega supports master system & 32X, as well as save states - it's a way bigger jump than super everdrive vs SD2SNES, for me.

i ordered the board only one on a group buy from khzz's shop that gun linked to back there, i wanna say it came to $115 shipped? way cheaper than what stoneage usually wants, and it should be here in the next week or so!

Links? I can't find anything out there that makes it clear, that's why I'm asking here. Even my clone cheapo Everdrive supports Master System and 32x, so I take it the genuine one doesn't? If so that's pretty lol.

I doubt I could find more than a couple of people for a group buy to New Zealand :(

You can always try ebay. I bought mine there, got it for 75$ through best offer.

What the Mega Everdrive can do that the Everdrive MD can't:
Max ROM size of 10MB (instead of 7MB)
Micro SD card slot and SD card slot (Everdrive MD is SD only)
Instant loading
Audio playback
USB port for future features (lol) and homebrew dev
Ingame menu and save states
Game Genie and Action Replay codes (GG only on the Everdrive MD)

That's pretty much it. Also apparently because it's an FPGA on the Mega Everdrive, it allows for future improvements. I have no idea of which sort. People talk about Master System FM sound emulation, others about SVP emulation. Nothing has been confirmed and it's pretty much wishful thinking now.

The Mega is mostly for devs, the everdrive is for your everyday use.

Also you're better off getting VR for 6$ on ebay than pay 75$ more just for future SVP emulation.

Thanks for this. I'm not sure there's anything there that justifies double the price for me personally. Max ROM size could be interesting but I'm guessing it still wouldn't play something like Pier Solar? I really just want to play my games without taking carts in and out, so maybe the Everdrive MD is gonna be it for me. I mean, the clone I have works fine, but I want something that is genuine and will stand the test of time.

yeah, ive read mixed things bout Pier Solar but i hear it works now, i'd like to confirm soon for myself. apparently that one had some copy protection but i think it's cracked now.

save states were a big part for me; not just for ninja-dog mode, but preserving high scores is awesome.

The reason they didn't support Pier Solar playing is because Krizz didn't want people to pirate it.

actually this question came up on his forum (as some were bothered by having such a clause on their device) and i recall he denied it & said it was copy protection on the game/ROM's part

Just recently beat Beyond Oasis

what a great damn game. A short little adventure with some cool combat and simple but interesting dungeon puzzles.

Also dat sprite work is godlike.

I can't play Pier Solar. Well, I can't play the ROM of Pier Solar that is included in the No-Intro set. I didn't bother to try finding it elsewhere, my copy is coming soon
late
anyway.

ye a month ago, I was getting impatient and they seemed to be so close to releasing it. Guess they weren't after all.

I have faith
I completely forgot about my order until this discussion

The Mega ED can also function as a save cartridge for the Sega CD. Not sure if the lesser flash cartridges can.

if you find someone who put in $ on an investor copy, they can still buy another copy! that's what i did, on Y at least

I will try. Most people seem pretty unhelpful though. Maybe I'll just wait it out.

Jesus, and I thought I was waiting a long time with my order going in a year and a month ago.

Well it's not quite two years. But it will be in December-ish...

I think I'm going to get the plain old Everdrive MD. Unless I can get in on a group buy with the Mega Everdrive. Then I can put the remainder toward getting an Everdrive 64. The dream is nearly complete!

i believe Nintendoage is looking at a possible group buy in october (i went with them on my mega ED), i'm saving up for a Super & N8 boards...if you want, i'll let you know when they're taking orders Peagles!

They're all very much worth it.

Speaking of Centy, I stopped in my local game store to pick up Destiny and they had just taken it in on trade. Far too expensive for me considering how short it is. Excellent game though.

Ah fuck it I just joined. Been lurking there for too long lol.

At least I could join straight away. I lurked gaf for so many years and I didn't know about the sign up waiting time because my fiance has an account but he made it before activation even existed, so he didn't know either, lol.

My activation literally took a year. I lurked just as much through that year as I do now. Probably more even because I could browse at work back then.
