Well that would've been awesome.

I definitely got the impression that most of Treasure's titles from that time were rushed out the door.

The western versions of Astro Boy and Bleach (and probably others) had some really significant improvements over their Japanese counterparts.

I actually saw Granada cart-only for $30 at the store I went to earlier today, but passed it up because I knew nothing about it other than its name and its publisher.

Admittedly, I went to said store to see if they still had that CIB copy of Lightening Force I discovered they were selling on Amazon on Monday. Naturally, it had already been sold... on Monday. Did get Tempest 2000 for the Saturn and some Looney Tunes SNES games, though, so that'll be interesting.

So I just won a copy of Phantasy Star 3 on eBay for $8:

It's a shame shipping to Canada is so expensive, and there's no manual, but look at that terrible
awesome
poster! I almost want to put that on the wall.

I know Phantasy Star 3 is the "dark-horse" of the series, but I've slowly been going through this series in order, and I wanted a Genesis RPG to play.

So, what's everyone's opinion? Am I going to have 20-25 hours of fun, or tedium when this arrives?

Phantasy Star IV is the only game in that series that I enjoy. It's also one of my favorite RPGs.

I respect PS1 a lot, especially when put next to its contemporaries. I think it's a pretty groundbreaking game for its time, but 8-bit RPGs are a tough sell to me, period. It's just too rough around the edges for me to get into.

PS2 was too tedious for me to put that much time into it, and it definitely shows signs of its age as a first-wave Genesis title. I never put any time into PS3 at all because it's supposed to be the bad one and I couldn't even bring myself to play through its two predecessors.

man, PS2 aged but it's a classic, wish it got more love. gunsmith played through it last year with the options for fast walking, easier grinding etc and i'm certain that helped! i got the PS collection for Saturn just to hear PS1 FM synth & look at the maps, basically, haha

also congrats again Peagles! i'm so going down that road soon myself.

I loves PS2, I played through it on my phone (official iOS app): the emulation wasn't amazing, but it was great to be able to grind on the go and in bed.

I loved the first person dungeons of PS1. I'm looking forward to 3, even if all it does is pave the way for 4.

Personally, I like PS3. Its not a great game, but i always liked the Generation mechanic, and its not a terribly long game, so seeing all 4 endings isn't a huge time commitment.

I played through on the jpn ps3 collection release of the 3 main games back to back to back(still need to go back to 3)

I love 4 the best probably and while I'm not fond of 3d dungeons 1 was a good blast to the past(and impressive for it's time. 2..... I have some mixed feelings, I did like alot of what they were trying to do but lord those dungeons where killer, there were a couple that were hard to navigate with maps :/ overall through really happy I finally went through the series and man they must have been something else played when they came out.

by the way, shoutout to Peagles for this post:

$8 shipped, and it looks perfect for my forthcoming mega everdrive - i'm gonna replace the label but i'm quite happy with it, going back in for the NES one!

Nice! I have a soft spot for the clear blue NES one actually, even though I know it'd never get seen closed up in the system, ha!

I just hope the insidey bits are in the right place for your Mega! I might even nab one for my MD, in a bit. Or maybe I'll have fun with a metal file again, lol.

I have some bad news for you...

It's cut to fit an Everdrive MD, not a Mega Everdrive.

The Mega everdrive have its SD slot on the back and to the right, the Everdrive MD has it on the front and on the left. The button was also moved around.

...

Sorry.

I would have lived a much better life not knowing this, but now its gonna kill me knowing it could have been.

Also, i feel terrible that i went off the grid for a while. My collecting was getting a little out of hand, and i needed to step away from SegaAge and places to get myself focused on school and actually DOING stuff with the games i have. Moving to Pittsburgh soon and getting a full-time job though, so once i get settled into that, i can really get back in the hunt again though.

Lol, I'm just surprised hackers haven't gone in and restored the content like folks did with Sonic 2 Hidden Palace and such (I think that even showed up as a legit level in the Whitehead port to iOS).

My friend lately has been really big on collecting Genesis games, he's going for all the 'black box' ones for now... so he picked up a few games that we played. Zoom, a Qix-esque game from the very very early Genesis period. Fun game and comes recommended if you're into Qix and/or arcade puzzlers. G-Loc which is basically After Burner but it switches to in-cockpit views every so often. I'm not a huge fan of After Burner (Climax was pretty sweet though) so the game didn't really wow me... it's a bit smoother than a lot of the Genesis ports of Super-Scaler games at least. M1 Abrams Battle Tank, which is impressive in that its got open-world polygonal graphics (obviously extremely rudimentary, makes Starfox look like a PS2 game), it really feels like an old DOS game that got a Genesis port, everything from the interface and the graphic style. Not very fun for me but I don't like military simulation stuff.

Also I'm not sure if this is the SEGA-CD appreciation thread as well, but I got a chance to play Wild Woody. I never hear anyone talking about this, which is weird since the game is hilariously awful! I'd have thought with the name, the premise, the dated 90's CGI, the stiff controls, and the horrible music (though the first boss has a vocal backing track singing along), it would have been a prime candidate for Youtube retro game commentators to rip on.

I actually mentioned it a ways back. I actually....didn't mind the soundtrack, but the guy who did it is currently the guitarist for Guns And Roses, if you can believe it. But yeah, Wild Woody is a game i plan to tackle at some point in the form of a video, because its a game with the ability not to be awful, yet totally is.

You won't like me if I tell you how much I paid for PDS and SFIII :p

Once you get past the ridiculously '90s "extreme" theme, Wild Woody is a solid, competent platformer, and I like it. Sure, it has some issues, but I think it's a fun game.

As for why it doesn't get much attention though, that's because it was a late (1995) release and sold terribly. It's uncommon, so most people haven't played or thought about it. In addition to the fact that I at least think that it's a quite decent game, the game is also interesting for being Sega of America's only Sega CD-exclusive platformer, and for being one of only two games made by Sega Multimedia Studios, a studio which apparently Sega sunk a lot of money into to very little result. All they made were Jurassic Park (Sega CD) and Wild Woody (Sega CD), and neither one was exactly a hit. JP did the better of the two, for sure, but there's no way it came even close to making back what Sega put into that studio. And then it got shut down in the mid '90s as Sega melted down.

I like Zoom as well. Simple and fun game. G-LOC... haven't played it much on the Genesis, but I liked the arcade version a lot back in the early '90s. Of course there's no way it could hold up to that level on the console, though... Sega's scaler games are mostly painfully choppy.

Did somebody say... Zoom?

"Come on, boy!"

"Come on, boy!"

"Come on, boy!"

"Come on, boy!"

NO.

I'll never be able to explain why i like Wild Woody, but he basically nailed it.There is something so "of the time" that i dig, and i think the soundtrack works, i think the cut scenes are incredibly awful in a good way, that bosses are actually pretty neat, and the idea of sketching power-ups wasn't actually too bad. I thought i was crazy. Black Falcon has my back.

I traded PDS to someone who hated it for 4 blank discs (worth about 10$ back in 1998) and got SF3 for 15$ on clearance in France :p

The vast majority of my Sega CD/Saturn games were bought new when they came out. That $45 was what i paid from Software Ect in 1998 (eventually bought out by Game Stop).

Panzer Dragoon Saga was $60-65 new if memory serves.

All discs except Mystaria had no rot.

Mystaria (also known as Blazing Heroes), has a rot spot, but it looks like its outside the data zone, so it should still work...for now.

I have the pal versions of PDS/SFIII and Mystara. Thing is, I think the european version is censored compared to the original Japanese/US release, but I could be wrong about that.

I'm so glad I got those games way back then (even SF CD, paid 40$ on ebay in 2002_ because current prices are insane

damn. when i was shopping around for my copy, a gaffer offered me a deal on his PAL one a while back - never did hear back on it, though. shame!

It really looks amazing, in two different boxes within a bigger cardboard box. rumor at the time was that Moebius himself drew the boxart ;)

I never heard this rumor, it's a strange one since the boxart is all CGI.

He did however the Japanese edition of Panzer Dragoon.

Man, since I started reading this thread, I've really gone overboard with the Mega Drive pick-ups...

Picked these up in the last couple of weeks
gwM81L9.jpg

Truxton is still on its way.

And the wish list hasn't gotten a whole lot shorter...
Batman, Bonanza Bros., Elemental Master, Gaiares, Ghouls 'n' Ghosts, Gunstar Heroes, Herzog Zwei, Kid Chameleon, Mega Man: The Wily Wars, more Phantasy Star, Probotector, Rolling Thunder 2, Shining Force, Sonic 3, Sparkster, Splatterhouse 3, TMNT: The Hyperstone Heist, more Thunder Force, Toki, Twinkle Tale, more Wonderboy.

Story of Thor is one of those "PAL-optimised" games that won't work when switching to 60Hz (the image starts rolling), yet the optimisation doesn't include game-speed nor squished image with black bars. I strongly recommend getting the American edition instead, if you have a mean to play it (software region lock).

Damn. Europe used all of our fugly box art as well. At least you guys called it Thunder Force IV. Elemental Master is a must get, probably the best game of its type anywhere.
