Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Damn. Europe used all of our fugly box art as well. At least you guys called it Thunder Force IV. Elemental Master is a must get, probably the best game of its type anywhere.

Well, from what I've seen of it (like most Mega Drive games, I've never played it), it certainly looks like a game I would want.

Elemental Master rocks and the soundtrack is 2 good.

About the box art... I like the American one way more than the JP one and I think anyone who disagrees is weird. The JP one looks like a kids' drawing. It's shit. Hell, the in-game cutscene art looks better.

Maybe the best soundtrack on the Genesis/MD? I think so.

I never heard this rumor, it's a strange one since the boxart is all CGI.

He did however the Japanese edition of Panzer Dragoon.

It's a rumor, no one can confirm if he did it or not.

Well, they re-released the OST last year and it's still available so you have no excuse.

WAT? JP art kills it (not to mention the heavy leather pants crotch action in the genny one):

The Elemental Master OST originally came out in 1991. I vaguely remember seeing it advertised in a manual for another Tecnosoft game. I guess that new one is a re-release?

Sorry about that, meant re-released, along with the OSTs to Blast Wind, all the Thunder Forces, etc. - a LOT of amazing stuff that's been OOP for a LOOONG time. btw, I have the original releases; the new releases are identical.

Good to know. Thanks for the heads up too. I've been picking up VGM releases here and there and would love to own this.

it's not? i always assumed it was, was kinda after a copy one day...so what's it of again?

This is like the one that came with my copy:

PANZER-DRAGOON-Sega-Saturn-POSTER.jpg

The back of it is sort of a manual, I think. Controls and such.

Huh, this is interesting. In my search for a jpg of the poster, this turned up:

Must be the Korean packaging?

Jean Giraud (Moebius) seems to have a copyright claim on PD's japanese boxart though.

Huh, where's that record at? I've heard people infer that the art and game are simply inspired by his works, while others say he had a direct hand. It'd be cool to actually have confirmation with something like that.

God the things I'd do for a full sized print of it. The things I'd do.

Interviews of the devs said he was commissioned for the art, and it's said he's in the credits (haven't seen it myself though). Maybe the copyright claim is for commercial use of his art as cover art when he only agreed to do illustrations for the initial design?

An excerpt of an interview can be found here:

And high resolution of the illustrations:

[edit] An interview (in French) where he actually says he made the cover art (but wasn't interested in designing videogames, unlike Benoit Sokal)

Kusonoki is a huge Moebius fan, he created the world with direct inspiration from his works but the cover for the very first Panzer Dragoon was made by Moebius. That's his only contribution to the Panzer Dragoon games though.

I should have clarified, the rumor was that PDS's boxart (Azel and the inserts in the Pal release) was also from Moebius, but that's just a rumor, there's nothing to back up that claim (unlike PD's japanese art).

So I'm thinking of picking up a copy of Castlevania Bloodlines, but I'm seeing a crazy amount of variation in the cartridges / boxes / etc. Seems like some copies came in the original snap-boxes, some came in the later cardboard, some have the "oily glue" transparency on the cart label, some were made in Mexico, some were made in the USA, and some were made in Japan.

I haven't seen this much variation with other games. What's the deal with this one?

Sounds like the first print (and the only one I care about) is the Konami clamshell made in Japan version. The later cardboard box reprints with the shitty photocopied booklet might have been the made in US ones, and the years later Genesis 3 Majesco reprint is for sure the made in Mexico version.

That sounds about right if my records are anything to go by. To be fair, the best one to get is the clamshell one, and its the most common of the 3, so its not too big of a deal.

Should I feel good that I got a CIB cardboard copy for only $10 from a Goodwill a few years back? Granted, I bought it assuming it'd be cart-only (I mean, it was on Amazon, so there were naturally no images), so to find it was CIB was a pleasant surprise.

I was impatient and went with SAG so I've got labels coming (they're included for "free" with the bare boards). At least all my labels will match as my NES one has their label too. Not to mention they are nice quality.

I joined Nintendo Age but I think a group buy with me so far away wouldn't save me much once I have someone ship it out to me internationally anyway. Ordering from retrogate would have meant waiting quite a few weeks for international shipping too. At this rate I should have them by this time next week!

Who did you end up going with to place that order? I have a regular Everdrive MD that I bought directly from Krizz back in the day, but I would like to grab a Mega Everdrive at some point.

Stone Age Gamer. Not the cheapest but they offer more shipping options than retrogate and they had all three ready to order so I just had to bite.

but SA's so expensiiiiiiive

Peagles be ballin'

ps my Mega finally shipped yesterday too, woo hoo!

Not really. I compared SAG and retrogate and it was ~$20 more at SAG. The prices for the boards were the same, give or take a couple of bucks. The price difference is really in the shipping, and I'd rather have them in a week or so from SAG than wait the 30-40 days estimate (that's the estimated to Aussie so it'd be even longer to NZ).

Oh and I got cart labels from SAG included in that price. I think $20 for much faster shipping and 3 good quality cart labels is well worth it. Not sure if retrogate includes them with the boards?

I'm not ballin', I'm actually a super cheap wad lol. I like bang for buck!
No, not like that...

ah, you're right - i mostly meant board-only on group-buy rates; looking at SA & retro it's not as big a gap (though the deluxe editions are kinda crazy). and yeah i dont think retrogate does labels for the boards, which is okay by me since i was mostly doing custom ones, haha. enjoy em when they get there!
also: lewd~

related: i found a turbo everdrive shell, might have to grab that for the inevitable board as well

I just rebought Quackshot, the game my parents purchased with my original Sega Genesis way back in the day. I remember how amazed I was by how much it actually looked like a cartoon.

I tested it out with my model 2 Genesis that came with the Sega CD I bought awhile back, and for some reason I can't move right using the D-Pad. I tried it out on my other Genesis and it works fine. I'm assuming there's a problem with the connection on the controller port. I'm not very good with this sort of thing.

Yeh, as much as I'd love to do the group buy thing, I just don't think it's feasible for me all the ways down here. The double shipping would probably kill much of the discount.

Edit: Just wanted to say that Quackshot is one of my favourite Mega Drive games. That is all.
