Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Yeah. To be fair, i would say i have honestly read through around 75-80% of all the manuals i have. Reading old manuals is so much fun, honestly, especially when it has the notes of owners past.

Yeah. A particularly loved SNES era Squaresoft manuals. So big and full of color.

Yes. Unlike the Playstation, 50/60Hz is defined by the console, not the game. A region switch is the best mod you can do on a Megadrive, and will turn most of your slow PAL games into superior 60Hz goodness. Most games can be played at whatever speed you like them better, but quite a few notable ones are region-locked or "optimised". I use my Everdrive to test which edition I want for my collection.
Thanks for the info!

I'm just hoping that they get released later. They have their own boxes and everything don't they? Gonna wait till the end to put in for that. I just dropped too much money on that Megaman X figure Kickstarter to get both the figures.

great, so now there's another figure i want, haha

Starting to wonder if that TJ&E Kickstarter is going to make it. The latest update made it sound like pledges have slowed down, and if they don't pick back up...

yeah that was my concern the other day too, but then it shot past 200k...if we can clear 300 i'm hopeful the mad rush of the last few days will push it over! gonna be so very broken hearted if it doesnt though...

You can go slightly cheaper with Everdrive v3, but it's older, slower and doesn't support the USB interface for advanced stuff like netplay and is also limited in ROM sizes.

yeah ive got the prior mega everdrive, i forget if there's ROM size caps? might explain Pier Solar not working...

also which titles support netplay? i dont know if i have that option either come to think of it

He just said you can add-on the figures on their own. The ship alone is $50, though.

shit, why didnt i notice that..how much are the figures? $50 for the ship is tempting honestly

I was watching one collecting show on YT and basically we're just paying for the carts, boxes, manual and artwork.

There are many means, legal and illegal, if you just want to play these games, but the collection scene is mostly about the physical product--carts, manuals, boxes, now anyway.

yeah, Mzo kinda pointed out to me a while back about how looseys are so cheap that the bulk of the cost these days is box/manual/etc really. there are totally carts i have that are cheaper than their manuals right now.

this! i love it, it's neat seeing high scores & notes too but i really miss my old ones sometimes, however embarrassing my self-praise was as a kid, haha

Netplay is new as of December 2014- they are working on it.

Pier Solar is not ripped properly and Krikzz won't actively support it because it's so new and the dev is still earning money from it... so I'm not sure. I ended up buying the Xbox One version- you can set the graphics and sound to Genesis mode.

I need some help! So I got a genesis for $5 and it seems to be defective. The thing refuses to show a picture. I've cleaned out the entire thing and re-tensioned the pins in the cartridge slot. I bought a new power supply and AV cables. I cleaned out the game I was using and still nothing. Am I doomed.....

man, this is really cool - if i had a friend down to play multiplayer genesis (TJ&E, Rolling Thunder 2, Bonanza Bros!) id be all over this

I hope somebody does more work on the Netplay! I'd love to play Mega Bomberman online or something. Re: The Avatar: Thanks man- I hope you don't mind me replacing the word quality with regret. lol.

Check out the back of my Surface Pro 3:

My 2 year old preorder of Pier Solar and OST finally arrived along with one of the limited editions of Sacred Line:
Damn, still waiting for mine. I'm in the UK

It's been a long 2 years for me as well

it's really getting to me seeing people receive their order. Guess its my fault for going with standard shipping

Haha, yeah, unless expedited shipping is grossly expensive, I tend to select the fastest shipping method possible. Hopefully you get your order soon!

congrats Hubble! man i hope mine are there when i get home, haha

Thanks dude! I hope yours are there to greet you when you get home too!

I put in for an LE of Sacred Lines based on this thread. Also did some digging at the local mall near my work today. I got a mint copy of Lunar on Sega CD for 60 bucks Canadian. I already had a disk only copy, so this is a definite upgrade and the new copy actually even has different disk art so that was a nice perk. I also got Eternal Champions on Sega CD at 15 bucks Canadian. I feel like I got some good prices and both games are in great shape.

This store was mostly over priced in my opinion, but they also had Dragons Lair at 40 bucks and Advanced D&D Eye of the Beholder for 50, both on SEGA CD. I can get those shipped for cheaper on ebay.

It's still available on the WM site. I just ordered it last night.

On the Lunar subject, does anyone know which variants are more rare?

Here is two sites that I have bookmarked that have info on the different disk versions of the sega CD version of Lunar 1. The second link also has info on the manual/case are that came with them.

As for Sacred Line, I could have sworn the boxed version was sold out when I was looking. Still, how is the game?

yeah, if those links don't suffice, there's a great one over at Gaijinworks' forum - rarity details straight from Vic Ireland's mouth!

How is Sacred Line anyway? Kinda feels like I should have ordered one of them as well while I had the chance.

Basically, its a Visual Novel game that starts a bit slow, but has an interesting premise and manages to set a solid, eerie mood. Having to roll a dice (that they give you, you just have to make it since its paper) is weird, despicably because you can just cheat and say you rolled a high number, since dying can mean a lot of backtracking. Not amazing, but it has its charms.

Just remembered I have a nice Alien Soldier repro cart, complete with case and black and white booklet. Fits right in with late US Genesis releases. I don't need it anymore since I have a real one.

Send me a PM with an offer if you're interested.

Will probably trade it straight up for a CIB Toe Jam and Earl rofl

I'm going to regret waiting so long to get the second Toejam and Earl game if the prices are rising because of the kickstarter. Guess I'm going to be madder trying to get a new case for the first game since I think the one I have is a printed copy. :c

^think mine's a printed copy too but fuck it, it's a nice one! got the manual/poster/etc so i'm good.

put in for the game & ship on the kickstarter, hype might finally get me to play through Panic on Fuknotron soon

The tier that comes with ship or just the tier with the game and paid another $50 for the ship? They are doing it pretty cool like, in that like every one of the cool higher tier things are also addons so you can just get them if you want. Wish the Torment kickstarter did that for the big ass cloth map since the first tier it was available on was like the $500 one.

Also, I also got the poster and manual with my TG&E as well, which is why I found it so odd that just the cover seemed like it was a print job.

great, so now there's another figure i want, haha

I'm honestly surprised that that figure didn't get more money. Think it must have been the lack of stretch goals or low amount of advertising. I think I saw one link for it in some thread and happy that I did. The normal figure itself is going to get a normal release as well so it's not like people missed out or anything though.

yeah, looking forward to the MMX regular release one day, long as it doesn't basically get amibo'd

the regular support bid for the game + $50 one; i wanted TJ&E both but $40/each or the tier that brings all 3 was too baller for my blood, so now i'll just pretend they're in the ship, haha. and damn that sucks about the Torment cloth map, one of my absolute favorite PC games right there.

speaking of Sega figures though: i've got Opa-Opa, a Ryo statue, Nei (PS2), fat/classic Sonic, and not much else so the TJ&E ship will look great up there. i want some of the Sega Girls gashapon one day (Tyris, Ulala, whats her name from MW IV, etc) but not for what ebay dudes want for em. I totally had a MUSHA gashapon lost in the mail once too.

i'd kill for say Axel from SOR, Joe Musashi, Alex Kidd etc but have never seen em. and one of my frist PM's on GAF was asking a dude where he got these:

they're like right out of Shenmue! i mostly want Harrier & Hang-On, but literally can't find them anywhere.

I used standard shipping too and I haven't received it either. I'm living in the same region as the sender, so it's supposedly coming faster than yours...

Just wait. Any time now 3d printing is going to make all of our useless trinket dreams come true. Only a matter of time at this point.

damn...Comix Zone is there with Shining Force II and numerous others that i'd like to have in their cardboard box one day, but don't mind leaving them in nicer clamshells with good quality print outs in the meantime

I still have these, love them to pieces. Got them off ebay ages ago, and I think there is one more in the set I don't have of a white Sega Saturn. Funnily enough they came out in 1997 or 8, so long before Shenmue so the space harrier and hang on toys in that game must of been based on these.

I still have the manual and promo CD that came with my Comix Zone, which is unusual because it was a former rental. I used to have the carboard box too, but I must've lost it.
That really bums me out because the CD sleeve slips in fine to the cardboard housing, but there is no way to get it to fit in a regular Genesis clamshell, lol.

ah, that was your shot, then? it's been forever...that's awesome though man, and again you ever decide you don't want em, lemme know, haha - been looking high & low for those!

that's crazy, what's on the disc? i vaguely recall some Green Jelly thing with some copies of Maximum Carnage but that one i missed

Well this is odd. Got my Pier Solar today and the game itself isn't screwed together. Like no screws at all in it, or in the package. Do not really know what to do about this, since I waited so long for the game. It doesn't seem like a big enough reason to try to send it back, unless I end up damaging it trying to take it out of the case or something.

I am happy for that outer plastic box in the packaging though, since it seemed to protect it well in shipping. The plastic corners of it were all damaged and broken off so much better them then the actual game case.

that's...so you're thinking if you pop it out of the box, it'll be a loose case & board floating about? what the hell

Well I know that is how it is, because I've already taken it out of the box once. I had to be real careful with it to get it out in once piece though. There are no screws floating around in the box either. Think I'm just going to contact them and ask for them to send out some screws or something. I don't get extra games or games I don't like so I don't really have any shit games I can just pull the screws out of to fix this.

I'd be demanding and just ask for a full replacement to be honest.

It crossed my mind, but I don't want to make too big a deal over it. Probably a problem with me that I'm always too nice with fuck ups, especially since I can't stand imperfections. As nice as it would be to get a free game out of them messing something up it really is such a small problem that should be able to be fixed easily. Unless I end up breaking something trying to screw new screws in/dealing with an unscrewed cart. Anyone else that has the game know if they use some non standard screw? I have a bit for the normal Genesis screws but if it is something else I wouldn't really have a way to get the screws in anyway. Should have asked that in the ticket I sent them I guess.

Also, anyone have a picture of the front of their pcb for the game? I can only find pictures of the back of it, and the front of mine looks odd, with just a big black blob on it. (See what I mean, that I can get real ocd about things)

maybe screws only come with the LE

lol.

Edit: On the other hand, the game isn't even working in my system....so yeah...

Slacker did you get a black screen? did you hit the reset button? i was reading elsewhere that this is a common thing, if so

Yeah, that fixed it. Just googled around for that as well. But not until after I tried it on my other Genesis, where it just worked normally. Might have something to do with the TMSS since the system that I had that it worked without doing anything is a TMSS model 1, while my standard Genesis is a non TMSS one.

Almost panicked there. Thanks chum.

Edit: At least my problems could be worse. Just checked their official forums and there is a guy who case didn't only not include the screws, but was missing the entire game itself. Also a bunch of people who's games just will not start whatsoever even with resetting. So yeah, when you guys get your copy make sure to test that shit.

yeah i'd just read about it last night at Sega-16, glad i could help man...having a non-TMSS myself (thanks again televators!) im already expecting ill have to reset, which is fine, battery abuse aside, heh

I'm shocked Sacred Line has been doing well then, as far as working stuff goes.
