Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

The issues with non-TMSS model 1's with Pier Solar probably don't apply if you have a 32x, do they?

PAULINK

I microwave steaks.
Enjoying my new model 1 genesis, seems to be the revision model since it does not have the iconic "high definition graphics" wording on top, which is fine since I got it modded.

Two things I wanted to ask, the first one is fascinating to me. I have a 6 button sega genesis controller that has a turbo and slow mode. Turbo does... just that but slow mode is crazy to me because it slows down the video to a crawl, how the hell does this work I wonder to myself, did not know controllers were even capable of doing something like this.

My second question would be how do you guys clean your genesis console / controllers? I just got a used controller in the mail and I really want to clean it but I'm not too sure what I would need, and I know I should disassemble the console to clean the shell but I'm not sure where to start.

I managed to get the tower of power to boot after fighting with it for some time.

Slow mode on controllers is just a rapid, auto-fire or Turbo mode for the Start button, or whatever the default pause button is on the controller. If a game uses another function for the Start button, then the Slow mode will repeat that continuously, like those games which use Start as a map or status screen or similar secondary game feature and not just for pausing the game state.
My second question would be how do you guys clean your genesis console / controllers? I just got a used controller in the mail and I really want to clean it but I'm not too sure what I would need, and I know I should disassemble the console to clean the shell but I'm not sure where to start.
Unplug, open it up with smaller Phillips head screwdrivers (be careful to not strip the threading or the head with too much torque on that long-sealed old hardware), and use a compressed air can/vacuum nozzle carefully on the PCBs and electrical connections, and a dampened cloth for the plastic and button silicone or latex membranes. Just remember how things came apart. You could light your cleared and flat workspace for video capture of your dismantling process with your phone or similar camera to play back for reassembly if necessary. It's pretty easy if you've ever done it for other pre-analogue controller consoles. **As an extra note for the model 1 Genny/MD, be aware that the volume slider plastic piece needs to be lifted up with some careful force as it is stuck on there after the main shell is coupled and closed together and the LED for the power light on the top half is connected to the PCB by a small and short wire twist that needs to be carefully disconnected before you pull the plastic shell halves too far apart.

Finally put in a significant chunk of time into Flink after buying it a few years ago, getting up to the point where the game shuts out people playing with infinite continues (literally just before the final two levels of the game). It's definitely a very pretty game, and the whole thing reminds me a lot of the first Rayman game. Still, I can't help but feel the platforming feels off, which is kind of a big deal in, well, a platformer. Jumping on enemies' heads seems inconsistent - if you aren't squarely above them, it'll count as you hitting their side and hurt you instead. Jumping on platforms is about as consistent, as well, and your relatively slow running speed means even small gaps can require pixel-perfect jumping (although for the most part, since your running speed is slow, the window for that jump is wider than you'd expect).

Basically, what I'm saying is screw the Sky stages so hard. I don't see how they expect me to beat the game in 3 or 5 continues when there are stages requiring perfect jumping skills set above bottomless pits galore when the jumping controls are a tad wonky, causing it to eat up a good 10-20 continues alone. I'm getting frustrated just talking about it!

Update on my Pier Solar, they want me to send the cart back and then they will send me a replacement. Not really worth all that effort for just the screws, and if I wanted something new I would have pushed for a complete replacement. Guess I'll wait for their response since if they meant for me to cover the return postage then that idea is right out the window and I'll just go buy some cheap cart from a local place to harvest the screws from.

I am also kinda worried about the need to reset the game every time I start it. Apparently that is a new issue that wasn't present in the first reprint of the game or the reprint ep version. Seen someone claim that those versions just didn't play the joke about ignoring the TMSS because the game wasn't licensed on non TMSS systems, and started normally.

I may have gone a little overboard...

Lol, just a little though. Make sure to test those unless you plan on keeping them sealed. Also are there a lot of different key chain variations? I got the frog as well.

If anyone is opening their cartridge out to check out the unique PCB I would like a picture of the front of it still. Nothing to go out of the way for, but if people are already doing it.

I'm going to open one of each. Hopefully I choose well!

Sweet I got a sort of broken up email that appears to show that my Mega EverDrive has been shipped back! Ah, hope at last.

I'm going to open one of each. Hopefully I choose well!

Thanks a bunch Peggles. My black blob is a lot messier, as to why I thought it was something wrong, but that is hardly something I can complain about since the game works. Just wanted to see what others looked like. I still think the whole custom pcb is really cool. I've read that the first editions of the game have something different on the inside as well.

Oh yeah, one more thing. Were the screws the standard genesis/megadrive ones? They have agreed to just send me out the screws so just waiting for them now.

From the context of it I think it is either broken English, or as a specific character that talks that way. Got me for sure though, just cool to open up a cart and have something unique in it.

Interesting... Yeh the custom PCB is a nice touch. I'm about to open on Sacred Line and see what that looks like inside. I got number... 54, maybe 55 I'm not sure, the handwriting is kinda bad, lol. I think it's a 4 but it looks like a lightning bolt. I'm stoked I got both games open without breaking the seal sticker, I just peeled it off and stuck it on the back of the outer case along with the WM sticker across the box opening too. The screws were larger size Gamebit screws, they worked with my larger bit anyway, even if they didn't latch on too well. They're probably the only thing that is lacking in quality.

:(

My Pier Solar works fine straight off the bat. Just tested Sacred Line and it's the same. Mine has TMSS though.

The having to reset thing for Pier Solar seems to be a non TMSS issue only. Apparently it isn't/wasn't in all/past revisions of the game either, but I'm not sure on that.

mannnn

Pier Solar works great (after resetting), but Sacred Line won't boot...resetting, whatever, just black screen =/

Well their support seems pretty good at least. Try it on another system or something, and then hope they don't want you to cover the return shipping.

Sacred Lines is definitely an appropriate game to be playing on Friday the 13th!

Has anyone here played Gaiares? I just nabbed a JP copy CIB locally, had a listen to the soundtrack on Youtube and love it. Pity I suck at shmups, lol.

The OST is amazing, but yeah, the game really kick my goddamn ass.

Also, i'm doing a stream for Segabits tomorrow at 7:30 EST streaming unreleased Sega games and prototypes. So if you ever wanted to see the authentic Itchy and Scratchy from the original source, or other weirdness, well, i invite you to join me

32X replacement cable came in, works far better..tested it with Knuckles Chaotix which looks fantastic over RGB, man i really gotta give that game a proper go one day

Mega ED still blue screens, again gonna try that other PSU later - 32X's use a model 2 AC right?

The issues with non-TMSS model 1's with Pier Solar probably don't apply if you have a 32x, do they?

to answer this: not even a little bit!

for whatever reason, booting Pier through my 32X did some weird shit where it'd again ask me which language, i'd pick English & get a "only menus will be displayed in this language" message (?), and then it'd say it needs to load/build the 64MB cartridge - something you only see upon first booting it on a Genesis - but it then gives a "something went wrong!" error...is this just me?

either way, Pier is totally unplayable for me over 32X, which if that's the case for everyone else, it's kinda frustrating & wish we've known about this before.

That can't be the case as I seem to remember there is some special item in the game if you are playing it through a 32x. Have you tried it on a TMSS Genesis with a 32x? Since the problems it seems to have already are from non TMSS Genesiseseses.

I'd be worrying real hard right now about not having a 32x to test this on myself, but on the other hand, at least I don't have a 32x.
Seriously though, whats the deal, Watermelon?

Special item if you're playing on a 32X? Interesting. Kinda makes me want to bust mine out and give it a try.

I sure hope the games are delivered today. Would love to dig into them this weekend.

yeah, saw that easter egg...i think you're right, my non-TMSS is likely the problem. why is that though? it's not like they need that licensed by sega screen, far as i can imagine

worse yet, heard back on Sega-16 about why i can't boot Sacred Line:

Due to a code issue, the game won't work on pre-TMSS models. Contact support on MGF to get a refund.

i don't recall seeing that up when i preordered...ive got a non-TMSS one but i won't really use it since mine's modded as well, prolly just play this on my Mega ED sometime but it's still unfortunate.

I would say a lot of the people I know who love the Genesis have a non-TMSS model.

That sucks.

I still need a Non-TMSS model. Still, i have my wonderful S-Video modded Model 1 and my Model 2 from my childhood, hooked up to my SegaCD/32x, and my Model 3. And my CDX.
I'm not doing too bad for variations.

Maybe their copy protection need it somehow, and it may be why it can't boot on an everdrive?

This lot was waiting for me when i got home today. Really pleased to finally own Japanese copies of Bare Knuckle 1&2. They are complete and are in lovely condition. I absolutely adore Japanese Mega Drive box art. Bare Knuckle 2 is especially funny considering the Creepy Arnold Schwarzenegger MR.X in the background and Jean Claude Van Damn Axel. Just Bare Knuckle 3 to get now but i will play the waiting game for that as it fetches a nice price.

I picked up Fire Shark complete today. Also got Castlevania Bloodlines, Fatal Fury and Turrican loose as well as a third party Sega CD power supply that works like a charm.

Anyone want to make some trades? I've got doubles of Lunar on Sega CD with no manual (just back cover and disk), Doom Troopers loose with a label tear over the ESRB rating, and Streets of Rage complete.

Some of the more common stuff I'm looking for would be Shinobi III, Phantasy Star III, Streets of Rage 2, Shining in the Darkness and X-Men 2. Also looking for SHMUPS RangerX and Phelios.

I've seen people post about how past revisions of the game didn't have this problem, and were even intelligent enough to not show the "disregard the TMSS" screen on start up if you didn't go through the TMSS. Not sure how true that is, just saw someone claim it in a thread on the watermelon forum. So yeah, got me whats up with this. It seems really odd to me that they just wouldn't have tested one of the Genesis revisions, especially since it is like the most recommended version of the system. I'm not mad or anything, it's just puzzling. Since I buy games to play I probably would be more frustrated if I got Sacred Line though.

My Pier Solar finally came, but it doesn't work on my modded megadrive, just shows black screen when I turn it on.

What a massive let down, 2 years waiting for a black screen.

Dear ***,

You are getting this email because you've purchased Pier Solar REPRINT and/or REPRINT_EP in the past.
We wanted to inform you that the games shipped from February 2015 has a small design issue.
This issue concerns a very few people, please read below:

If your Mega Drive or Genesis shows the "Licensed by Sega" text at power-on, you wont be affected.
The issue will only trigger on Mega Drive 1 or Genesis Model 1, non-TMSS (without the "Licensed by Sega" text).

If affected: The game will not start on first power-on.
A workaround: You need to press RESET button after power-on to start the game. The game will then play normally.
A definitive fix: We cannot fix the issue at the moment, we will get back to you when any updates.

Persons willing a refund or having questions can contact the costumer support. To make it simple, if you didn't receive your shipped games yet, we would appreciate you contact us after having received them.
We apology again for the late announcement. We will keep everyone informed.

http://www.magicalgamefactory.com/en/faq/contact-support_5/

Best Regards

WATERMELON TEAM

At least they're acknowledging the issue.

Holy crap! Hahahah. Is it weird that it hadn't even occurred to me that they might still have some? Just bought it! Thank you!

So do I get the OST discs with my reprint? Or do I need to pony up the $35?

Haha, nice one!

The latter. It's a damn nice set though and apparently leftover stock from the Kickstarter; once they sell out that's it, forever.
