Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

I already have Sonic and Knuckles.

Sonic 1 strangely to this day I do not own (the original cart) for some reason. I own it on other versions such as mega collections, ios, and every damn other port of it but not the original
Personal suggestion: try to get the Japanese game, if you have the chance. It has slight visual advantages over the other versions.

I acquired a Model 1 Sega Genesis from Ebay ("High Definition Graphics") version, which is an easy way to guarantee it has the best audio chip. I'm awaiting the SCART cable for it from Retro Gaming Cables UK.

Yup, exactly like that.

Although I'll note it's a little loose in the converter, at least for me. There's a gap underneath it, so don't jiggle it too much - maybe find something to prop it up - and you should be okay.

just some reasonable sounding confirmation that Strider was indeed probably going to be a 6-megabit cart, before becoming an 8-meg cart.

Hey, what is that Sega Cyberdome ?

Edit: found some pics from a Japanese magazine.

Similar to Namco's Galaxian 3 Theater system.

read that this morning, that Sega Cyberdome looks insane

Thanks!

I would make them an offer if you're serious. Or, maybe you can work out a deal with him to just take the BLW mod itself. IMO it's worth $50-75 by itself (even though stock price is 25, but they're so slow in shipping, lol); he would definitely take that bait. The version 1 BLW mods that I have, games are hard to get out but not impossible, but every game has worked on the 1st try.

do i need a splitter for th SCART, so one goes to the audio converter and the other to the component converter?

No, you just plug the SCART cable into the audio splitter, taking the RCA audio plugs out of it, and then plug the male SCART end of the audio splitter into the component transcoder, taking the RCA YPbPr plugs out of that.

I still prefer the Sync Strike by a large margin, but I guess the scart to component converter is a decent one to use for certain displays and capture cards...I just hate adjusting it!

I mean, I admittedly don't know what he's plugging it into, but if it is a CRT television then, as mentioned before, a Sync Strike is completely useless.

It would have to accept 240p 1st, if the display can accept 240p through component(which is difficult to do) a Sync Strike can as well. The scart to component converter does not upscale while the Sync Strike can be at least.

I'm just going by experience with both devices, that's all.=p

Also Teknoman, I notice a green tint in your youtube vids...I guess you have to adjust the pots of the scart to component converter to fix that.

But again, A) if it's a CRT, it will accept 240p - I'd imagine counterexamples here are extraordinarily rare - and B) CRT TVs rarely, if ever, have VGA inputs, so he'd have to convert the VGA signal to component anyway.

Yeah, that makes sense.

Sorry about my Sync Strike love though, it's been flawless for about 2 years now.

Sanyo CRT

the SCART cable arrived today and it does not have RCA audio, so I'll need to buy the splitter. Agh, buying things! -__-

Yeah my older 31 nights of horror videos were with the first one before I adjusted the pots...and before it died lol. Actually could you check out my Metal Black video to see if it looks off? It's with the new converter I have, which I think most get be a little more red skewed, but it might just be me. Either that more most recent faxanadu video.

Your Metal Black vid looks fine. So does Faxanadu.

Okay so got my frammeister today and it comes with the JP21 to mini din adapter. A few questions:

1. So in order for me to use SCART on the Genesis I will need a cable that is compatible with JP21, correct?

2. Are these harder to come by than the European standard?

3. Should I just get a European SCART to mini din adapter and buy the compatible SCART male cable?

Just from videos I've been watching and from some comments here I noticed that most people are using European SCART. I'm assuming because they are easier to come by?

I can use this converter with Saturn SCART yeah? and Saturn->SCART->component will be a better picture than S-Video?

Yeah you'll be good.

Audio in and out are on separate pins so if you don't have any sound don't fret, just flick the switch.

If you feel adventurous, you could probably mod audio out on your Component converter box instead of having yet another adapter for the audio. Fairly easy but does involve soldering and also a bit of drilling.

oneida, if you have multiple consoles on SCART RGB you might consider getting a SCART swtich so you aren't swapping cables all the time. The transcoder will typically be a very tight fit, so swapping often might damage the cables. As of a couple years ago Bandridge was the go-to , and even nicer it would solve your audio dilemma since the audio is split into your choice of RCA stereo or 3.5mm from the switch itself. Only problem is they're harder to find nowadays. Anyway just something to think about.

thanks ill keep my eyes peeled! anything else worth SCARTing?

Where's the best place to get stuff to clean Mega Drive cartridges(it's rubbing alcohol I'm looking for, right?) in the UK?
I've set my old CRT up, and I'm looking to put my Mega Drive on it, but it's only playing 4 of my games now. All the others either don't do anything, or show the Licenced by SEGA message, but don't load the game.

The games that work work fine, aside from they'll freeze if you keep them paused for a while.

Use an eraser. Rubbing Alcohol can leave a corrosive residue, also some people make the mistake of putting the cart in to fast without giving the pins time to dry which in the long run can damage the system. So...use an eraser.

Right, thanks.
I'll have to give that a go then.
Yeah, I recently tried the eraser method and it cleans the pins back to like new condition as long as they were never corroded. You just need a security bit screwdriver that will open the carts up. I clean every cart I get with one now.
