Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Yeah, I recently tried the eraser method and it cleans the pins back to like new condition as long as they were never corroded. You just need a security bit screwdriver that will open the carts up. I clean every cart I get with one now.

If you don't have a security bit or do and are lazy, this fits in and works well.

Just bought a HDG Model 1 FJ8USASEGA with a Hyperkin controller for $32.00. I dunno if that's a good deal or not but it was the cheapest I've seen for a HDG model. Question. In the age of ever drives is it still worth it to learn to region mod it, and is getting imports for it cheaper than say Saturn or PC Engine games?

I think it's easier just to flick a switch when you encounter a problematic game than to dive into menus to find the right setup, enter an AR code or go online to try and find a patch.

Hey guys, I just bought a model 1 Genesis and I'm having trouble getting it working? Was hoping someone could tell me what's wrong.

So first off, i'm just getting a black screen when I turn it on. Is it normal for the cartridge to just... fall into place in the slot? It doesn't seem right. I feel like I should have to slam it in. Nothing is holding it in place. Like if I turn the console upside down the game will just fall out.

Well you should never need to slam it in, but it should not fall out upside down. Sounds like someone cleaned the pins with something wider than a cart, or was wiggling the cart in and out. Either way your pins are spread.

It's like there is no board in your console

It might be a silly question, but you are actually pushing the cart fully into the slot aren't you, and not just pushing it only far enough to rest it on the top of the connector?

Otherwise, it's possible that the pins are very loose or the connector's broken.

God dammit, I feel like the stupidest person on the planet right now. It was totally just resting on top. Guess I had to push it down a little harder than I thought.

Well at least your Genesis is not broken.

I guess I'd rather be dumb than have a borked Genesis. The C button kinda sticks tho.

Excited to start collecting some games from my childhood now. So far I'm terrible at Earthworm Jim. Bought Sonic 1 and 2, NBA Jam and X-Men on eBay last night. Ya know, the basics. Any other essentials?

I guess it's super common to get a Genesis without the expansion port cover and original ac adapter. The Chinese made adapter I got is as light as a down feather. Which means $40 total for the cover and the Sega stock AC adapter.

If someone can recast that cover and the Sega CD metal plates they'd make a killing!

Comix Zone, Revenge of Shinobi, Shadow Dancer, Shinobi 3.

So, I've been looking around for some sports games and come to the conclusion that NBA Live 95 and NHL 96 would be the best choices. Getting ISSDX for SNES as that is way cheaper (or should I go with the MD version?) and already own NBA Jam TE.
Should I buy the NTSC or PAL versions of the EA Sports games, or does it make no difference?

Edit: went for the MD version of ISS, even though the crowd noise is torture in that version.

Yearly sports games are cheap enough where the region doesn't matter. Hell, people usually give them away. Unless you go for the Mutant games, those are more expensive and those are based off of the madden and nhl engines.

*checks Retro Core and sees Atomic Runner*

I need to get Atomic Runner.

Yeah, that's a game I need to pick up at some point too. Remember my younger Brother going crazy for that game randomly one year (playing arcade and Genesis roms back to back), and I was just upset they completely didn't tie up the "Rescue your Sister" plot point and just scoffed at how "dumb" it was (Hey...I was...pretty particular about my Damsel in Distress plots back then >_>)

Here's a vid from Soft Space Insittute on his S-video and back AV port modded Model one MegaDrive compared to the stock console (composite and non-headphone sound I'm assuming). Nice demonstration of what added fidelity does for Sega's 16-bitter! ...and that ending! (not for the faint of heart Nintendo fan ^_-)

I'm not getting why Atomic Runner is so great from the vids. What makes it a good game?

I didn't used to like the game but I find it pretty fun nowadays. I'm crap at it though. Also, it's worth nothing that it's better to set it to one of the control methods where you only need to press a button to turn. By default you have to press a button while you're pressing the direction you want to turn, and that can be rather annoying when things get hectic.

Edit: Oh yeah, and the art direction in the Sega version is pretty fun.

Got CIB Ms. Pac-Man and Columns and a beat up copy of Sonic 2 for $27. Also tried to get a Sega brand AC adapter and the merchant was like "If it didn't came with the system chances are we received the Genesis without it." Such bullshit. So I got the adapter and the expansion port cover shipped.

Use an eraser. Rubbing Alcohol can leave a corrosive residue, also some people make the mistake of putting the cart in to fast without giving the pins time to dry which in the long run can damage the system. So...use an eraser.

Not arguing against the eraser method, but are you sure about that warning regarding rubbing alcohol? Nintendo's official cleaning kits always recommended using a 1:1 solution of water and isopropyl alcohol.

For one, the back of the NES carts tell you not to do that.

There is still water in Rubbing Alcohol and that can still sit on the contacts. The lower the % the better I guess, but I would still not advise it. Also what are you applying the Alcohol with, a Q-tip? That can leave fuzz on the contacts.

I don't have it with me at the moment or I'd take a photo, but the official NES cleaning kit explicitly tells you to use a 1:1 mixture of water and isopropyl alcohol. As I understand it, the warning on the back of the cartridge was to prevent people from using just any ol' solvent or non-isopropyl alcohol (I believe ethanol can be extremely damaging). I apply it with the little cloth stick from the official cleaning kit or with a dry cotton t-shirt wrapped around a credit card. Of course, it's important to gently dry the contacts afterwards, as well (another step mentioned by the official cleaning kit).

I stand by this, too. Alcohol is fine and works well. 91% isopropyl and a clean q-tip that I turned between my fingers to smooth down any stray strands has served me well for years. Erasers are great, too. On really tough jobs, I use both.

You don't need to take a photo, I believe you. But there is more that can go wrong using Alcohol/q-tip method, which is why I recommend the eraser. You can apply to much, fuzz from the q-tip, inserting the cart into the system before the pins are dry etc. Alcohol evaporates faster than water. Bottom line, eraser is better than putting a liquid on metal IMHO.

Is there a comprehensive list of games released on both the Genesis and Super Nintendo? I'm filling out my Sega collection and obviously if the better version is on the Genesis then I want to get that one. I just bought Flashback and Desert Strike, for example.

I'm only talking games where the content should in theory be identical and not stuff like Aladdin, which had different development tracks.

Finally made it to the second level of Shining in the Darkness, The Cave of Strength. And got ended by a Chestbeak. Not a mimic, but an actual monster hiding in the chest that jumped out onto the chest and stabbed me in the face.

That's fucked up. It sounds awesome, but i feel like i'd be down a Sega Genesis controller if that happened to me.

I gave up on that game after getting to the second floor, it just wasn't worth the tedium.

To be fair, whenever you die "valkyries come and take your party's remains back to the shrine where the priest revives them", so really all you lose is some gold, and maybe progression if you didnt make note of where you were. But on the other hand, its kinda not fair to put a chest right near the entrance of that area with such a strong enemy, especially when you can steamroll through most enemies in that immediate area.

Its ok so far. I like the soundtrack and character/monster art, and when actual character interactions happen...its cool. But I can see where tedium would set in, especially when moving around the dungeons.

Still playing Persona Q right now, and man does it make me appreciate the auto map feature nowadays.
